I am suffering dry cough from 3 month and have allergy when we wakeup early in the morning. Please give me knowledge ...
Dear Lybrate User, this is a long time to be suffering. You could start doing warm salt water gargles in the morning and night. Certain tests would need to be done to find out whether this is an allergy or an infection. Please do consult a doctor as empirical medication might not help your condition.

Why is Cancer the biggest Threat to the YOUNG in India?

Why is Cancer the biggest Threat to the YOUNG in India?

Why is Cancer the biggest Threat to the YOUNG in India?

There are fewer Indians who have successfully battled Cancer and have emerged successful. Yuvraj Singh, the legendary cricketer, who was diagnosed with a rare cancer at 29, survived due to an early detection. Cancer cases in India are not as many as they are in the developed world. However, due to late detection the survival rate in the country is far worse. Particularly, we are losing our youth to Cancer. Most tobacco (pan masala) related cancers and child cancers go undetected until very late.

Few cancers like cervical cancer and breast cancer which affect women of any age, are curable, however, due to lack of awareness and timely screening, many Indian women succumb to these cancers. The most common sites for cancer among men are lung, prostate, colon, rectum, stomach and liver while that among women are breast, colon, rectum, lung, cervix and stomach.

In proportion to our population, we lack the right infrastructure nationwide. esp in the northern and north eastern region, there is a dearth of good cancer facilities, where radiation, care or treatment can be given. Not even one third of cancer patients are alive beyond 5 years after their diagnosis in India, and about 71% of cancer deaths occur in patients in their prime productive years — between the ages of 30 to 69 years.

“Most Indians believe that cancer is generally incurable and that it should be kept secret from neighbors and family.” -  Dr Paul Goss, MD, Harvard University.

All these factors have contributed to a very high mortality rate. No wonder Cancer is dreaded in the country. Investment, infrastructure, lifestyles as well as mindsets need to change if we were to contain the Cancer mortality rate. While you need to watch out for early signs of cancer, here are the lifestyle changes every individual esp. all youth must adopt to avoid cancer.

  1. Avoid Tobacco - both smoking and chewing.

  2. Reduce alcohol intake - Save your organs from deteriorating.

  3. Limit UV ray exposure from the sun - Keeps your skin safe.

  4. Maintain a healthy diet - Include foods rich in Vitamins, minerals and fiber which nourish your body and build immunity.

  5. Increase your level of fitness - Maintain a good bodyweight. Additional flab invites a host of troubles, that includes variety of cancers.

  6. Seeking regular medical checkup or screening - This is the only way to prevent and get detected early on.

'Consult'.

I have strong cough from last 3 weeks and also I get tired very soon after climbing 2 floors or short distance running. And I often sneeze .like once or twice a week.

MD PHYSICIAN
General Physician, Delhi
Any cough more than 3 weeks need to be investigated. Get a chest x ray done. You probably getting tired because of chest congestion, other causes include thyroid dysfunction, anemia, allergies etc. Take steam twice a day. Sipping warm drinks will definately give you relief. You can use nasal saline drops for nasal congestion. Certain mucolytics and bronchodilators will be beneficial for the same.

Hello, a respiratory condition marked by attacks of spasm in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing. It is usually connected to allergic reaction or other forms of hypersensitivity pathophysiology asthma is an airway disease that can be classified physiologically as a variable and partially reversible obstruction to air flow, and pathologically with overdeveloped mucus glands, airway thickening due to scarring and inflammation, and bronchoconstriction, the narrowing of the airways in the lungs due to the tightening of surrounding smooth muscle. Bronchial inflammation also causes narrowing due to edema and swelling caused by an immune response to allergens. Description to understand asthma, it helps to know how the airways work. The airways are tubes that carry air into and out of your lungs. People who have asthma have inflamed airways. The inflammation makes the airways swollen and very sensitive. The airways tend to react strongly to certain inhaled substances. When the airways react, the muscles around them tighten. This narrows the airways, causing less air to flow into the lungs. The swelling also can worsen, making the airways even narrower. Cells in the airways might make more mucus than usual. Mucus is a sticky, thick liquid that can further narrow the airways. This chain reaction can result in asthma symptoms. Symptoms can happen each time the airways are inflamed. Sometimes asthma symptoms are mild and go away on their own or after minimal treatment with asthma medicine. Other times, symptoms continue to get worse. Treating symptoms when you first notice them is important. This will help prevent the symptoms from worsening and causing a severe asthma attack. Prevalence according to recent estimates, asthma affects 300 million people in the world and more than 22 million in the united states. Although people of all ages suffer from the disease, it most often starts in childhood, currently affecting 6 million children in the us. Asthma kills about 255, 000 people worldwide every year.

Hi, for cold and cough 1. Try to keep body warm 2. Do not eat and drink cold food items 3. Try to avoid persons affected with cold and cough because it spreads through droplet mode by coughing and sneezing 4. Take a tablet of levocetrizine and a basic antibiotic with an expectorant cough syrup for 4 days 5. Consult through video for details after chest x ray report.

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Its indeed nice and is in your best interest that you have quit smoking ultimately. Well, it does not necessarily mean that anyone who smokes gets cancer. Smoking does increase the risk though, of getting cancer. Simultaneously, it exposes one to various lung ailments too. For your present issues, I would advise that you get in touch with a pulmonologist, in person. He/ she can clinically examine your chest and also advise diagnostics suitably including a chest x-ray (pa view) as appropriate to understand the real issue. Simultaneously, I would advise you to go for a healthy and balanced diet and maintain a regular lifestyle with due focus on daily exercises, yoga/'pranayam' de-stressing and relaxation. Try including more of green leafy vegetables and fruits in your daily diet. Preferably, go for a mediterranean diet for maximum benefits. Stay well hydrated. Dietary supplementation of b vitamins especially vitamin b6 is known to reduce the risk of lung cancer. Hope this helps. Do take care and all the very best.

Iam suffered from cough for 3 months many tablets are used there is not working and check the blood results there is no cancer and tb. So how to reduce.

DAA, DNB
Pulmonologist, Bangalore
Hi. I understand your concerns. You will need to undergo a detailed examination and investigations like chest x ray to look for infection. If it's normal then you will need to undergo pulmonary function test which is needed for diagnosis and also to assess severity of bronchitis based on which treatemnt can be started. Consult a pulmonologist for the same. Ihope your questions were answered. Thanks.

Hello Mr. Lybrate-user. As you said you have infection. Do routine blood test to rule out whether is it infective, viral or allergic. For productive cough you better do your x-ray chest (p/a) view. Let we know. As you have taken antibiotics n symptomatic rx. Try homeopathy to avoid recurrence and better recovery.
