Warm up your body before running. 4> Massage your shin muscles for 10-20 minutes. You can massage with ice. 5> Strengthen your lower legs. Ask your physiotherapist to teach you "Prevention For Runners Program" 6> Finally, have patience. Sometimes sore shins just happen and unless the pain is severe or sharp, you can train through it. Stay tough! NOTE: If your shin pain is severe, sharp, or lasts longer than a month, you should get it checked. You could have compartment syndrome." mednames="">That is termed as Shin Splints. It usually affect new runners or those who donot run consistently. It is caused by too much stress to the shin muscles. There are several reasons why you may be getting shin splints so one of these treatment options may not work for you. My recommendation is to experiment with all of these suggestions and if you can, implement them all. 1> Don't tie your shoes too tight. Doing so will restrict your shin muscles movement. 2> Avoid "three too's" - too much, too soon, too fast. Sudden increase in volume or intensity can over stress your shins making more susceptible to sore shins. 3> Warm up your body before running. 4> Massage your shin muscles for 10-20 minutes. Generally fatty liver reverses on its own. If doesn't, it may deteriorate further. Some herbal medicine may help control it. No direct sex life interference but overall health deterioration may hamper sex performance. Good that you have quit smoking.

Follow the following tips:- · Pay close attention to your food choice. · Eat less carbohydrate food sources like chapatti, rice, noodles, pasta, bread etc as they help in gaining weight and storing fat. · While having lunch or dinner eat vegetables and dal to fill your stomach rather eating lots of chapattis or rice. · Have a healthy breakfast like poha, idli, upma, plain dosa, oats, dalia or khichdi with vegetables. · Eat a balance diet including good quality proteins like: fish, lean chicken and eggs. If you are a vegetarian then include skimmed milk, low fat paneer, butter milk, soy bean or soy milk in your diet. · Avoid ghee, butter or vanaspati. Prepare your diet with vegetable oil like sunflower, safflower soybean or olive oil. · Eat plenty of salads. · Eat fresh fruits including apple, orange, pineapple, papaya, sweet lime, berries, guava, watermelon, mask melon etc. · Avoid eating outside junk and fried foods like pizza, pasta, roll, burgers, cakes, chocolates and cookies. · Have an early dinner. The earlier the better, giving your system more time to digest the food. · Avoid cold drinks/alcohol as they add empty calories to your diet. · Avoid fat enriched milk products like cheese, sweets, full fat cream etc. · Drink 3 liters of water in a day. · Try to have less sugar in food and beverages. · Try to drink 2 cups of green tea in a day as green tea helps in weight loss by aiding digestion. · Avoid red meat like mutton, beef, lamb or pork. · Eat sprouts or roasted chana, whenever you feel hungry. Exercise: Combination of cardio-vascular exercises and weight training can bring effective weight loss along with the diet. Running, jogging, cycling, swimming and dancing are some best forms of cardio-vascular exercises which burn fat instantly. Working out with dumbbells, push-ups, pull-ups, weight lifting are the exercises which help to tighten the loose muscles and shape your body.

Epilepsy - It's High Time You Should Consult A Doctor!

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry, MBA (Healthcare)

Epilepsy - It's High Time You Should Consult A Doctor!

Epilepsy is a form of chronic disorder and it is characterized by recurrent seizures. The episodes of epileptic seizures may differ from person to person. These seizures could be a result of genetic disorder or a result of trauma or stroke. During a seizure, a patient may also experience symptoms of neurological disorders and sometimes lose consciousness.

Medical help for epilepsy
Epilepsy itself cannot be cured using medication, but proper medicines help in eliminating recurrent seizures. These medicines stabilize the electrical activity within the brain preventing seizures.

How effective is the medication for epilepsy?
The success of controlling seizures using medicines depends on the type and severity of epilepsy. Medicines for epilepsy are usually very effective and may fully keep seizures under control. However, controlling seizures caused due to brain problems may be more difficult. Usually, epilepsy medicines can control seizures for a long period of time when they are taken regularly.

When is medical help needed?
The decision about when to start medicines for epilepsy is a tricky one. This is because a first seizure cannot confirm whether a person has an on-going epilepsy problem. A second seizure may occur after many years or may not happen at all. Prediction of seizures is also quite difficult.

The severity of seizures also indicates when to start medicines for treatment. In case a first seizure is quite severe, medication should be started at once. Some people have very mild seizures even though they may be recurring in nature, and medication can be avoided in this situation.

All the pros and cons must be thought over before starting medications for the treatment of epilepsy. It is advisable to wait for a second seizure and then start medications for treatment. In most cases, medication is started after a second seizure occurs, twelve months after the first seizure. You should always consult a doctor to know when you need to start taking medicines to treat the condition.

For making the most out of the medicines to control seizures, you should follow certain steps:

  1. You must take medications exactly as your doctor has prescribed.
  2. Before switching to generic versions of your medicines or before taking other prescribed medicines, you must consult your doctor.
  3. You should never stop taking the medicines.
  4. In case you experience enhanced depression, mood swings and suicidal thoughts, you should talk to your doctor immediately.
  5. In case you have a migraine, you should let your doctor know so that he can prescribe you anti-epileptic medicines, which also prevent migraines.

Although it is important to manage and control seizures, they do not always require you to visit a doctor. However, if you notice the below signs you must check with your doctor immediately.

  1. When you notice that the person suffering from seizures has stopped breathing for 30 seconds or more
  2. When the seizures are prolonged that is they last longer than 3 minutes
  3. The frequency of seizures is high or there is more than 1 seizure in 24 hours period.
  4. If the seizure attack happens immediately after a severe headache
  5. if the person suffering from seizure shows signs of stroke as well, such as
    • Loss of vision
    • Inability to speak
    • Unable to understand what others are saying to him or her
  6. A person suffering from seizures shows the following signs even after 1 hour of attack

Medicines cannot treat the underlying cause of epilepsy, but these help in controlling seizures and this is the most common symptom of epilepsy. Medication should be started at a proper time and must be continued without stopping.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
