7 Risk Factors For Heart Disease And Ways To Manage Them

PGDCC (Cardiology ), CCEBDM (Diabetes), CCGDM (Gestational Diabetes), CCMTD (Thyroid), MBBS
Cardiologist, Udaipur
7 Risk Factors For Heart Disease And Ways To Manage Them

Heart diseases also called as cardiovascular diseases include a wide spectrum of conditions which affect your heart. The diseases include blood vessel diseases, heart attack, rhythm problems, and angina. Heart diseases are currently the most common cause of death worldwide.

There are a large number of risk factors which predispose you to increased risk of heart diseases. Some of those risk factors cannot be modified (non-modifiable) and are not under our control while there are others that you can modify (modifiable) to prevent heart diseases.

While you cannot do much about non-modifiable risk factors (like age and family history) you can reduce your chances of heart disease by working on the modifiable risk factors. This include:

1. Smoking

Smokers have more than twice the risk of heart attack as compared to nonsmokers. In fact, even nonsmokers who are exposed to constant smoke (such as living with a spouse who smokes) also have an increased risk.

What you can do: Quit smoking or never start smoking at all. If you find it hard to quit on your own, consult an expert who can walk you through the entire process.

2. Obesity and physical inactivity

You are at increased risk of heart disease if your body weight is more than 20% of the ideal weight or if you are fat and obese. The most common reason for this is physical inactivity or sedentary lifestyle.

What you can do: start exercising regularly. You should exercise for 30-45 minutes for at least 5 days/week. Even leisure activities like walking or gardening can lower the risk. You can also set a pedometer goal of 10, 000 steps a day.

3. Unhealthy diet

Taking a diet rich in saturated fats, salt, and refined sugars can significantly increase the risk of heart diseases.

Things you can do: Include a lot of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains in your diet. Avoid taking fried food which is rich in saturated fats.

4. High blood pressure

Hypertension or high blood pressure is one of the most common heart diseases risk factor in the western countries and adequate measures should be taken to keep it under control.

What you can do: you should keep the blood pressure under control through diet, exercise, and medications.

5. Diabetes

Diabetes itself can cause significant damage to the heart and along with other risk factors, it can have a synergistic effect.

What you can do: keep your diabetes under control by making some lifestyle changes like healthy diet, exercise, taking medicines as prescribed by your doctor and going for routine blood tests and health check-ups.

6. High cholesterol

The risk of heart disease increases as the total amount of fat or lipids in your blood increases.

What you can do: have a diet low in fat and rich in fruits and vegetables. Start exercising regularly. Get a lipid profile test done regularly to know your lipid status. Consult a doctor if the levels are too high for lipid lowering drugs.

7. Stress

People who take are prone to getting stressed easily and who cannot manage their stress effectively are at much higher risk.

What you can do: de-stress yourself by indulging in hobbies or activities which you like. Try yoga or meditation or join a club or class for the company.

It is not necessary that if you have these risk factors, you will definitely develop cardiovascular disease. But, the more risk factors you have, the greater is the likelihood that you might develop these diseases. Therefore, it is important that you adopt a healthy lifestyle and take appropriate preventive measures.

Hello lybrate user, it seems that you are suffering from acute gastritis. A burning in the region of middle area of the chest which is more enhanced in the lying down position indicates that there is hyper acidity due to which you are unable to sleep. If there are no associated symptoms like palpitations, radiation of this pain to the left-arm, shortness of breath, dizziness associated with your present complaint then the diagnosis of acute gastritis becomes even more reliable. It might be due to changing food habits since you have already stated that this problem has emanated since you have shifted to a new place. My advice to you is that you should start taking more fruits because fruits have an inherent capacity to overcome acidity. You can also try some anti-acidity medicines that are freely available as syrups or chewable tablets from any local chemist.

I have pain in my right side of chest at night but I smoke everyday what should I do I have a problem quiting smoking.
you have chest infection.due to smoking..pl. stop smoking.Your personal stop smoking plan While some smokers successfully quit by going cold turkey, most people do better with a plan to keep themselves on track. A good plan addresses both the short–term challenge of quitting smoking and the long–term challenge of preventing relapse. It should also be tailored to your specific needs and smoking habits. Questions to ask yourself Take the time to think of what kind of smoker you are, which moments of your life call for a cigarette, and why. This will help you to identify which tips, techniques or therapies may be most beneficial for you. Do you feel the need to smoke at every meal? Are you more of a social smoker? Is it a very bad addiction (more than a pack a day)? Or would a simple nicotine patch do the job? Do you reach for cigarettes when you're feeling stressed or down? Are there certain activities, places, or people you associate with smoking? Is your cigarette smoking linked to other addictions, such as alcohol or gambling? Are you open to hypnotherapy and/or acupuncture? Are you someone who is open to talking about your addiction with a therapist or counselor? Are you interested in getting into a fitness program?

My heart is blocked 60%. My medicines is for whole life or any other advice to clear this blocking.
Medicine is for life but you can use pomegranade juice/ apple cider vinegar / honey and fresh lemon juice everyday -all of the above or any 1 or 2, because some studies have claimed the benefits about reducing blockages / not making fresh blockages and these are harmless home remedies.

Hi, first thing you should do is ask your father to stop smoking. Next he should take all his medicines regularly, which is to prevent him from getting another stroke. Try to control his blood pressure in consultation with your doctor. Healthy diet and regular activities should supplement his treatment.

Can I know that what is sugar blood pressure and heart attack I can understand this matters please help.
Blood has sugar in it to give us energy to live, if it exceeds certain levels, it is diabetes due to type 1 or type 2. Blood pressure is pressure with which blood runs in blood vessels, if it runs too fast because there are obstructions in vessels or there is a kind of kidney disease present, pressure becomes high and it is called high bp, heart attack is when blood supply to heart muscle is affected due to blockages in its blood vessels, heart tissue gets damaged and it is called heart attack.

Diploma in Anesthesia, MBBS
General Physician, Hyderabad
Low blood pressure on its own will not cause any problem for your wellbeing. so you need not worry much about it. at the most you may feel giddy when you sit up from bed and stand up from sitting position. to avoid that, those two movements should be gradual and not suddent. as for food, any type of food which is normally cooked in the house is good enough. you increase your salt intake. no need for any extra salt. as it is Indian cooking contains more than sufficient salt, so no need for any addition. Good luck

Mr. Lybrate-user, the various things you have mentioned are some what inter related but everything can not be predicted as you may be thinking. Various things can cause problem with heart. High cholesterol can cause blocks in the coronary artery which can lead to angina or later myocardial infarction (heart attack). High blood pressure puts extra work load on the heart. Diabetes does affect large blood vessels (coronary artery) and also aids dyslipidemia. Tests like echocardiogram and angiography do help in identifying possible causes leading to heart attacks.
