Hi doctor I am a diabetic, take medicines for it and do exercise too. But now I don't want to take medicines because of side effect threat. Please tell me an exercise which is helpful to prevent diabetes.

MBBS, MD

Hi doctor
I am a diabetic, take medicines for it and do exercise too. But now I don't want to take medicines because ...
All types of exercises like walking, yoga etc if done in moderation, are good for diabetes but avoiding medicine if not suggested by a qualified doctor is not a good idea. I agree with you that medicines have side effects but if you take them under supervision they can be recognized and medicine may be changed accordingly.

Study has revealed that for type 2 diabetes risk, where you live matters

Study has revealed that for type 2 diabetes risk, where you live matters
A new study has revealed that for type 2 diabetes risk, where you live matters.

The university of california san francisco study found that living in a neighborhood with resources to support exercise and with access to healthy food was linked to a lower incidence of type 2 diabetes, medpage today reported.

Researchers found that 12 percent of the more than 5, 000 people in the study developed diabetes within the average 8.9 years of follow-up, but patients who lived in areas that had access to more physical activity resources and healthy foods had a lower risk of developing diabetes.

The social environment of a neighborhood was not associated with the incidence of type 2 diabetes, found the researchers, who were led by paul christine.

Researchers nancy adler and aric prather wrote in an accompanying editorial that they do not yet know what elements of neighborhoods are most essential for generating better health, these researchers provide important clues about which elements have an effect and for whom.

They noted that the risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus is a combination of both person and place, and the national strategies need to understand and intervene across these levels.

Christine and colleagues also found that environmental resources mattered differently to those with higher and lower incomes. Poorer patients in areas being viewed as having less social activity and as being more dangerous to go outside in were more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, but overall, neighborhood safety and social cohesion were" largely unassociated" with diabetes.

The results suggest that modifying specific features of neighborhood environments, including increasing the availability of healthy foods and physical activity resources, may help to mitigate the risk for t2dm, added researchers.

Hair tips for better hair growth 1. Having a healthy diet - Having a diet which is full of protein, vitamins and minerals is an important aid towards having healthier hair growth. Consume food which is high in vitamin A, B, C and E. Vitamin B-complex is another very effective vitamin for promoting hair growth. For the minerals, try and consume iron, copper, zinc, selenium and magnesium. Walnuts, beans, flax seeds are rich in omega 3 fatty acids which are great for hair growth You could also have some juices of fruits and veggies, like orange, grapefruit or carrot, lettuce and beet 2. Castor oil has a high content of vitamin E and essential fatty acids, like omega 9. This is why it is an essential ingredient which helps to promote hair growth. Castor oil is too thick to be applied directly, which is why you must dilute it with oil like coconut, almond or olive. Massage your hair with the oil mix and leave it on for 30-45 minutes. You could also slightly get it heated. Shampoo your hair and condition as regular. 3. Regular scalp massage - When you massage your scalp, it promotes blood circulation which in turn stimulates our hair follicles. Along with that, deep condition the hair once a week with warm oil treatment or a deep conditioning hair mask. 4. Staying stress-less - Stress is one of the worst factors which contribute to hair loss. Stress disrupts the regular hair cycle and boosts strands of hair to fall out of place. You need to calm your senses and promote lesser stress! For handling stress, try and mediate, do breathing exercises or practice other relaxation techniques 5. Egg masks - Egg is an important ingredient from promoting better hair growth. They are full of protein and are added on with minerals like iron, sulfur, selenium, zinc, etc. Use an egg mask once or twice a month for promoting healthy hair and improved growth 6. Vitamin and herbal supplements - Supplements of folic acid, biotin, flaxseed oil, are some common elements for hair growth. Supplements of folic acid and biotin will have Vitamin B complex which aids to better hair growth. 7. Nourish hair with aloe vera - Aloe vera improves hair growth and protects from hair loss. You also reduce dandruff and restore the natural shine. Take fresh aloe vera gel and add some lemon juice to it Apply and let it soak for 20 minutes Shampoo the hair and repeat once a week 8. Be hydrated, have proper sleep, do oil your scalp twice a week contact us for homeopathic medicine.

Blockages in Heart Arteries - Know About It!

Clinical Cardiology, MD - Consultant Physician
Cardiologist, Surat
Blockages in Heart Arteries - Know About It!

Blockage in heart is a common term used for narrowing of coronary arteries. Coronary arteries are vessels, which supply blood and thus oxygen and food) to continuously working heart muscles. Heart muscles which are not tired working from the birth till death, however, cannot sustain long without blood supply.

A reduction in blood supply gives rise to ischemia of heart muscles commonly manifested as chest discomfort or angina. A sudden complete shutdown of blood supply leads to heart attack leading to permanent damage to heart (if blood flow not reestablished promptly).

But what causes these arteries to block? Deposition of LDL cholesterol (low density cholesterol) in inner surface of coronary arteries is the primary reason of these blockages. LDL a normal component of blood (upto certain limit) starts depositing in arteries as early as 10 years of age!

Deposition of billions of LDL molecules over several years on inner surface of arteries gives rise to visible narrowings in these arteries. Flow ahead of these narrowings is reduced in proportion to the narrowing. At a level of 70 % narrowing the flow is reduced to give ischemia (and angina) during exercise. Gradually increasing degree of narrowing reduces the exercise needed for ischemia and angina; a narrowing of more than 90 % can give symptoms at rest. A sudden clot formation at any of these stages can block the flow suddenly giving a heart attack.

If LDL is a normal component of blood, why it is deposited in the arteries at first place?

LDL above a certain limit in blood starts depositing in the arteries. Diabetes, Hypertension, smoking, less exercise and genetics makes it more sticky thus making narrowing faster. This is why these risk elements need to be properly attended for prevention from heart disease. For treatment medicines are important for stopping the progression of narrowings; angioplasty is a method of fast resolution of blockage; and bypass surgery is the method of creating a whole new blood supply for the affected part of the heart.
