Hi doctor. My 3.5 months old daughter catches fever every 25-30 days. And she has got little cough too. I give her P125 drops (8 drops 3 times a day) and for cough sinarest (10 drops 3 times a day and keflor (half spoon 3 times). What should I do? I am worried since she is too small.

Pediatrician, Tumkur
Small babies get viral infections because of low immunity. Give same drops for fever 12 drops whenever there's fever. For cough give kofarest ped drops 10 drops thrice daily. If any fast breathing you must show to a pediatrician.

Hi I am blessed with a baby boy on april 10th.
Since two days he has vomited two times. He is affected with jaundice...
Well jaundice in newlyborn is mostly physiologic due to blood group disparity between in mom and child ,and many a times due to various other subtle reasons for which you have just not to be worried much. Just make sure it is not pathological disparity like ABO mismatch. No need to be worried. Enjoy the child hood of your baby after proper consultant visit.

Symptoms and Myths About Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and How to Spot Them in Children

Children generally tend to be fairly over active and have lesser attention spans. However, when this tends to get into their performance at school and in general with getting along with other children it may be a sign of ADD or attention deficit disorder. Let's look at some of the common symptoms of this disorder.

Symptoms of ADD:

  1. Problems in staying focused: One of the very basic symptom is that children will often be very inattentive even during classes and will be easily distracted by small things.
  2. Problems in trying to remember things or difficulty in following instructions: Children with attention deficit disorder tend to have issues with remembering things and if given tasks, being unable to complete as they can't remember instructions properly.
  3. Issues with organizing, planning and trying to finish tasks: Due to the lack of attention, kids have problems retaining information and cannot plan or finish tasks given to them on a daily basis.
  4. Easily bored or loses interest: Even if a child with ADD starts with something they like, interest may wane off quickly. Thus it is difficult to make them stick to a specific work schedule which may require regular practice.
  5. Lack of attention to details and making careless mistakes: This is another trait of children with attention deficit disorder. They may be able to complete a task, but it will be fraught with mistakes as they wouldn't have much attention to detail.
  6. Has a tendency to not listen when someone is speaking to them: This is also very common and is usually tied to being easily distracted and thus will drift off or not listen to when someone is speaking to them.

Some Myths about ADD:

  • All kids with ADD are hyperactive
  • They will eventually grow out of it
  • Medication is the only option to treat ADD
  • ADD is not really a disorder and kids need to be trained better

Most of these are half truths and the extent of the problems varies from child to child. Only proper counseling will be able to diagnose the extent of the problem and what needs to be done.

How to spot ADD in Children:

ADD can be spotted in children aged below 7 years via certain symptoms. Apart from the ones mentioned above, children generally tend be abrasive towards others and can make embarrassing comments quite often. They also change tasks very quickly without completing any of them. Any distraction would force them to change their track. It is best to go to a child specialist to get your child checked out for possible symptoms.

Nght time crying and morning sleep normal phenomenon for baby as in womb so she will take time to adapt to new environment. She does not need any medication for that. You can use pediculoryl thts safest drug fr sedation in babies but try not using it daily.

Are there any long-term effects associated with taking ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) medications? If so, what are they and what medications are implicated?

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
Use of stimulant decreases the symptoms to a much good effect and if we don't give stimulant medication there will be more of conduct disorder and progress in disease and for side effects we have to monitor the person and advice them accordingly.

I have a 3 month old baby he has a cough I tried many medicine but no result every night he awake and cry.
Try to keep baby warm with use of wollen caps, socks, and gloves. Use simple nasal saline drops for blockade and steam inhalation is self sufficient and use of antiallergics and antibiotics should be restricted. Some children require bronchdilators and mucolytics. Some children have immunodeficiency and need thorough medic al checkup for proper treatment.

Respected sir/mam now my baby is 6 weeks old. Please tell me which vaccines are mandatory. And which are optional.

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
Pediatrician,
Respected sir/mam now my baby is 6 weeks old. Please tell me which vaccines are mandatory. And which are optional.
DPT /Hib /HepB /IPV..(some include rotateq first dose) Routinely given, you can give PCV in addition to the former. All these are to be given every month for three months. Optional is a misguided word. What it really means is, give it, if you can afford. All recommended vaccines are beneficial and are desirable but for affordability. (I use Rotarix at 10 & 14 wks instead of rotateq 6-10-14 wks. Both schedules are equally good)
