Aching joints are among the most common health complaints, and they can happen for reasons too numerous to count. If you, like me, suffer from the occasional twinge in the knee or feel your elbows demanding some tlc after hours of slogging at the desk, I have some advice that will bring you relief. I have tried each one of these, and felt better each time. The good news is, these remedies require very little effort, and yield great results. Feast on carrots: did you know that carrots have been used for centuries in chinese medicine as an effective remedy for aching joints? simply grate a carrot in a bowl, and squeeze some lemon juice on it. Enjoy raw or steamed. Carrot nurtures the ligaments, bringing relief from pain. Munch on fenugreek seeds: my grandmother? s favorite remedy for joint ache. She would soak a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in clean water overnight. In the morning, she would drain off the water and munch on the seeds. They taste slightly bitter to begin with, then slowly and pleasantly sweeten as you chew. According to ancient indian healers, fenugreek is? warm? in nature, which makes it helpful in healing your joints. Drink more water: among the lesser-known benefits of drinking more water is that it softens cartilage and keeps it hydrated. Water helps you maintain an adequate blood volume so that nutrients can move through your blood and into your joints. It also moves waste away from your joints, making them less likely to ache aching joints are among the most common health complaints, and they can happen for reasons too numerous to count. Taking Care of Your Joints as You Age

Skin is one of the most obvious parts of our body, which ages with an increase in the number of candles on our birthday cake. As you age, joints tend to become stiffer and less flexible. The body does not recover from bumps and bruises as easily as it did before, and it becomes difficult to stand for extended time intervals. This is caused mostly by a breakdown of cartilage and inflammation of the synovium.

What is cartilage?
Cartilage is a flexible connective tissue. It connects the ends of two bones in a joint. It is softer than bone tissue but less flexible than muscle tissue. Cartilage is responsible for the smooth movement of joints.
With age, cartilage begins to degenerate. As the cartilage gets thinner, movement becomes more and more difficult. If left untreated, the cartilage may completely wear off leaving no buffer between the bones. This is one of the leading causes of knee replacement surgery.

What is synovium?
Synovium is a membrane responsible for keeping the cartilage healthy. It produces a thick fluid that keeps the cartilage and joint lubricated. In cases of osteoarthritis, this membrane can swell up and produce excess fluid. This in turn causes the joint to swell as well.

Along with age, factors like being overweight, genetics, gender and lifestyle also play a role in the condition of your joints. Being obese point towards a sedentary lifestyle and puts extra pressure on joints, leading to the thinning of cartilage. While men have higher chances of becoming osteoarthritis patients before 45, women have higher chances of developing this disease after 50. A healthy lifestyle is the easiest way to ensure that your joints work well even when you're old and grey.

Exercise
Movement of the joints keeps the fluid in them moving. It also prevents the cartilage from shrinking and stiffening up. Exercise also makes the bones stronger, and slows the rate of bone tissue deterioration. Stretching exercises are also a good way to maintain the flexibility of joints.

Healthy diet
Foods that are known as natural antihistamines, antioxidants and foods that fight inflammation promote healthy joints. Some of these are:

  1. Green tea: It prevents the breakdown of collagen and cartilage
  2. Nuts and seeds: These are rich in omega 3 fats that are essential for good bone health
  3. Ginger: It relieves pain and joint swelling
  4. Yogurt: It helps soothe tender joints and fights inflammation
  5. Pomegranate: It protects the cartilage against damage

Hot and cold therapy can also help relieve joint pain and reduce inflammation. As you get older, avoid putting too much pressure on your joints and give them adequate rest. Lastly, avoid smoking, as people who smoke have an increased risk of cartilage loss.

I am 64 years of age. I am unable squate on the floor for many activities. Also I had astabul fracture in 2009 in the right hip.Though I am able to walk but the freeness is not there. It pains at the thigh joints. Please advice how to get rid of this?

DNB (Orthopedics), Diploma In Orthopaedics (D. Ortho), MBBS
Orthopedist, Chennai
Dear, It appears to me from your description that you have developed osteoarthritis of the hip joint following the acetabular fracture. This has resulted in stiffness in the joint due to which you are unable to squat or move your leg freely. You need to do stretching exercises along with strengthening exercises for the muscles around your hip joint. This may help increase the movement in the joint. The ultimate deciding factor is the amount of damage to the joint. I can determine this by seeing an xray. If you get xray both hip joints - AP and lateral views and mail them to me, I can offer a better opinion. I suspect you will need a total hip replacement surgery in the end. This will completely release all the stiffness in the hip and give you a pain free hip joint.

This is a common problem with new Gym going person. One should avoid forward bending and straight leg raising, sitting cross-legged. If it is mild it will take 1-2 weeks. You should stop Gym for few days to a week. But you may continue GYm with the afore said precautions. You can continue walker in the mean time.

I understand your pain. To get relief from your pain start doing hot and cold fermentation. Take hot water in one vessel and cold water in another vessel. Mix some alum in hot water. Start with hot fermentation and ends with hot fermentation. Place your foot in hot water vessel and perform some exercises like toe curls and after 1 min move your foot into cold water vessel. Perform the same exercise. Thrice a day for 15-20 min in the ratio of 1: 1 will reduce all your foot pain. After this you can also perform calf stretching and strengthening exercise.
