Causes of Neck Lumps

MS - ENT, DNB (ENT)
ENT Specialist, Delhi
Causes of Neck Lumps

We have often noticed outgrowth around the neck in a lot of people. The neck lumps are of varying sizes. While some may be unduly large in size, others range from being moderate to miniscule.  Usually, neck lumps do not bode any cancerous development and are benign in most cases. However, certain specific types of neck lumps can often bode serious health impairments. A lot of the neck lumps are painless and do not cause any discomfort to the patient. However, these lumps must not go unattended in either case. Especially if they are cancerous, a speedy detection is expedient to arrest any further damage. The neck lumps stem from a lot reasons.

Some of the most common causes are enlisted below:

  1. Swollen Lymph nodes:  Lymph nodes are spread all over your body. They are often susceptible to infections caused by germ attacks. Infection causing bacteria or viruses often result in the enlargement or swelling in the lymph nodes. This manifests itself as neck lumps, albeit sometimes. This could also arise out of allergic reactions to certain foreign substances.
  2. Cancer: While a neck lump may not necessarily mean a sign of cancer, some lumps could occur due to tumor formations, which unfortunately indicate a malignant growth. Radioscopy and biopsy are the usual techniques through which the malignancy of the tumors can be detected.
  3. Thyroid Disease: Some neck lumps occur due to an inflammation in the thyroid glands. On account of certain hormonal imbalances, hyroid glands may swell up leading to neck lumps.
  4. Mumps: Mumps is a contagious disease that is caused by a viral infection in the respiratory tract. As a consequence, the salivary glands may swell up causing neck lumps. Mumps are very common in children.
  5. Tumour in the salivary glands:  Another common cause of neck lumps are tumours in the salivary glands. On account of a variety of external as well as internal reasons, there may be an abnormal growth in our salivary glands. This leads to lumps in the neck.

The earliest signs of neck lumps should goad you to consult a doctor. While it may not be of alarming nature, to avert any major ailment, it is worthwhile to be cautious beforehand.

Tobacco - 7 Ways it Affects Your Dental Health

Tobacco - 7 Ways it Affects Your Dental Health

Tobacco has many ill effects on the health and dental health is one of them. From dark stains to poor gum health to increased incidence of decay to the more severe oral cancer, tobacco has a very detrimental effect on your dental health. Read on know more about how harmful tobacco can be on the dental system.

  1. Brown teeth and tongue: One of the tell-tale signs of a smoker are the brown teeth and stained tongue. A dentist need not even be told that the person smokes, it just shows!! What is interesting is that these stains do not go away with a scaling, they just continue to form as long as tobacco is being put into the system.
  2. Gum disease: The oral health of a smoker is definitely not at its best. With the stains on the teeth, the gums are more prone for irritation and infection. This leads to grayish, unhealthy gums. The periodontal fibers are also affected, leading to bad breath, pocket formation and even tooth mobility in severe cases. The mouth is generally drier in comparison and so bacterial growth is more favored, further accelerating the process of gum disease and teeth decay.
  3. Dental caries: The increased amount of bacteria leads to greater incidence of dental decay. Chances of cervical decay (around the gum line) and root decay are higher in smokers.
  4. Bad breath: There are two reasons to it one is the tobacco per se and the second is the dry mouth, which leads to reduced saliva and increased bacterial growth.
  5. Impaired taste: The tongue has a constant coating too, leaving the taste buds unable to completely taste food substances. Ask any smoker a couple of questions and you would realize how they never get to enjoy and taste the food as it should be.
  6. Poor healing: Whether it is a gum disease, a tooth removal or a root canal therapy, smokers who go for dental treatment need a longer time to respond compared to nonsmokers. If smoking is continued at the same pace, then the chances of developing a dry socket with an extraction or a failed root canal therapy are quite high. There are more failures reported in success of implant in smokers as compared to non smokers.
  7. Cancer: The most dangerous and the most severe of all, cancer of the cheek, gums, lips, tongue, roof of the mouth can all happen in smokers, twice more likely in comparison with non-smokers.

Now, if all these are not good enough to kick the habit, remember this list is only for the mouth and the teeth. The whole body goes through a lot more harmful effects, and that should be a good reason to quit tobacco use in any form. If you need professional help, do not be embarrassed to seek.

Hello sir/madam I am 25years old I had a doubt! One week ago I had protected sex, after attaining orgasm I removed my male part from her female part, but mine is not attached with condom. Even though the entire semen is stagnant in condom I still afraid is there any chance of getting pregnant? Because while removing condom from her part I see the outside layer with white greasy substance in outside of condom. Was that my semen or condom lubricant? Or any other? I'm afraid because this was my first experience for both of us. Please help me to resolve this issue. Thank you.

PhD Human Genetics
Sexologist,
Well, the correct use of condom includes withdrawing the penis while it is still hard (after ejaculation), and in doing so you should hold the rim of the condom with fingers and pull out the penis along with condom. You seemed to have stayed inside her till the erection is partially lost, and hence the problem. The chances of pregnancy depends on whether some semen seeped into her vagina, and on the day of her menstrual cycle on which sex took place. Since 1 week elapsed since the intercourse, you can only wait and see.

Hi Lyberate user. Its unlikely that you are pregnant if there has been no intercourse after feb incident. Once you have a period after a an episode of intercourse its unlikely to be pregnant. However if you have been sexually active after that its possible that you might be pregnant. Please do a home pregnancy test and confirm.

My partner wants 7-8 times sex everyday. Even she wants in periods time. Is it ok to do? Please suggest.

Doctor of Naturopathy & Natural Medicines, DM - Clinical Haematology

No it is not at all a good habit, doing sex 7-8 times a day will ruin you specially male person physically, undersand you are human not a machine, sperm needs a cycle of 3 weeks to completely develop the cells it has, sperm is everything for males in term of stamina, growth, strength etc. Doung sexin periods may bring sexualky transmitted disease in both of you. To live a healthy life maintain a healthy sex habit, you may feel offended but let me tell you ancient ayurveda says sex should be once a year, modern ayurveda says sex shud b done once a month, in both cases you need control. I suggest you should keep swallowing ginger as ginger helps controling unwanted desires. You cannot produce healthy baby if you hv such frequency of sex. Please think abt it, for better planing consult me privately.

Health checkup before conceiving is important as a healthy mother is able to handle changes of pregnancy better. If there is any health problem, it should be evaluated and treated before pregnancy. Folic acid supplementation should be started 3 months before conceiving.

Hi lybrate-user As it is clearly known from the usg report that there is no chance of pregnancy but the delay is due to the hormonal imbalance caused due to the cysts formed. There is no age for cysts to be formed. You should start working out regularly and start homoeopathic treatment for your cysts and hormonal imbalance. NO need to worry. For furthur queries contact privately. Takecare.
