Heel Pain: Know its Causes and Treatments

Oh my aching Heel!! The combination of foot and ankle consists of 26 bones, 33 joints and an excess of 100 tendons. The longest bone present in the foot is the heel. Over usage or injury to the heel would lead you to experience pain in the heels. The severity of the heal pain can range from mild to excruciating. 

The cause behind heel pain is typically associated with excess usage of the heel bone (learn more about to maintain bone and joint health). Straining of your heel occurs if you excessively pound your feet on surfaces that are hard, or you are overweight or even if you wear shoes that do not fit your feet properly. These strains cause irritation in the muscles, bones or tendons that are present in the heels. Some of the other common causes include: 

  1. Heel Spurs: Development of heel spurs occurs due to the continuous stretching of the lining, which covers the heel. Upon continuous stretching, pieces of the lining tend to break off. Development of heel spurs is common in athletes who frequently jog or run. People who are obese also tend to experience pain due to heel spurs.
  2. Plantar Fasciitis: Development of Plantar Fasciitis occurs due to the inflammation of the tendinous tissue that connects the heel to the ball of the foot. Development of Plantar Fasciitis is common in athletes who frequently jog or run as well as people who wear shoes that don't fit the feet properly. It may occasionally be associated with Vitamin B12 deficiency and raised uric acid in blood 
  3. Achilles Tendinitis: This is the inflammation of the Achilles tendon. Achilles Tendinitis occurs commonly in people who have active lifestyles, such as people who are joggers, runners or even dancers. 

Treatment-

Physical therapy, medication or alternative treatments can be used to treat this form of pain. Medications for heel pain can only be in the form of anti-inflammatory drugs. Although these oral medications cannot significantly relieve heel pain, some injections containing substances such as corticosteroids, as well as Arthrocentesis (removal of fluid present in joints using hollow needles) might be able to provide relief. Recently PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injection have been found very useful in treating recalcitrant Plantar fasciitis and heel pains. 

Common practices that can be used to relieve discomfort include: 

  1. Application of ice to the heel for a duration of 15 minutes daily. 
  2. Utilize over-the-counter pain medications .
  3. Have adequate amounts of rest .
  4. Wear shoes that fit properly .
  5. Walking on tip toes to stretch the plantar fascia helps to relieve heel pain.

Hi I am 51 years old and pain in shoulder for last 2 months. It is very difficult to lift something

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Shoulder pain could be due to many reasons like bursitis, tendinitis, capsular involvement, impingement etc. I would like to ask you regarding the onset of pain and cause of it? have you got any relevant investigations/treatment done for it till now? normally if there is no swelling or any other sign of inflammation, you can start with - physical therapy - anti inflammatory medicine for 7-10 days ice packs at home 3-4 times in a day - adequate calcium and vitamin d intake as per requirement. If your pain does not subside with this, then we will have to consider getting some tests like x ray to see joint degeneration, or maybe even mri of the affected shoulder. My father has gone cervical laminectomy and also he is recovering from depression due to symptoms of cervical. But after surgery, now its 3 months, he still feel weak. He sometimes not able to stand in toilet, when he sits on feet. Is it will take time? Or some thing you want to suggest to make weakness improve at faster rate?

Any limb weakness present before surgery may take upto an year even after adequate surgical decompression. The duration and degree of recovery also depend on the time lag between onset of symptoms and the surgery. Expect a good recovery with regular physiotherapy.

it is due to cervical problem. apply volini gel on neck. do warm fomentation. do neck exercises in pain free period. avoid high pillow. it will help you.

I am 30 years old, my left leg was fractured at ankle joint two years before. Now it swells & pain regularly please give me the solution.

Pain& swelling in leg is a common after fracture rule out diabetes & vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Do hot fomentation keep a pillow under the legs at night &/when resting. Any way take take multivitamins & other antioxidants along with. Ibuprofen 200mg od & sos x 5days you will need other supportive medicines also. Do ankle/foot & toe exercises it may have to be further investigated make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take. I have a pain in right leg ankle for last 15 days it's a mild pain but I feel discomfort when walk I can't able to stand also because of my other leg is also getting similar pain in ankle from yesterday please suggest me what to do?

Identify the mid point between the ankle bone and tendons and give pressure with a blunt edge on either side of your foot for 2 minutes. Also give pressure in the web between 2nd and 3rd finger from your toe for 2 minutes. Finally give a good massage for both feet in hot water. Identify the dipping portion on the back of your knee folding. Press this dip with both middle fingers and hold your knee with your thumbs for support. Please swing 20 times morning and evenings. This will relieve your problem. Inform after 10 days.

I'm a dancer and after my class I sometimes feel a bit of knee pain. No specific leg, but sometimes it hurts. Anything I can do to strengthen my knee or any advice? also, I tend to lock my knees sometimes. So I don't know what to do?

Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. SPRING BEDS, FOLDING BEDS OR THICK MATRESS ARE HARMFUL DO HOT FOMANTATION. Paracetamol 250mg OD & SOS x 5days. Caldikind plus 1tab OD x10. It may have to be further investigated. You will need other supportive medicines also. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take. If it does not give relief in 4-5days, contact me again.. Do not ignore .It could be beginning of a serious problem.

Hi. The symptoms which you are describing may be because of improper handle position of your bike. Try to check that. And pain is more now. Try hot water formentation and few physio sessions. Good luck.

I am 66 years old and under medication for B p for last 30 years and for sugar for last 6 years. I have also under gone a spinal cord operation for disc prolapse (l 4, l 5) 14 yrs before. My bp and sugar are under control. Now I am feeling numbness in my legs. Especially in night and early morning. Is due to b p, sugar or spinal cord problem.

When I'm folding my leg for few mins, am getting pain in my left knee while standing, since few months.

1. Get one x ray done for knee Joint. 2. Don't sit on floor. 3. Don't fold your leg 4. Don't sit on floor. 5. Start with Physiotherapy treatment. 6. Learn knee exercises. 7. Use knee cap for support. 8. Take calcium, vitamin D 3 and Glucosamine supplement for one month.

Hello- ayurveda has a very effective schedule and treatment for gout. Your pervious treatment experience was not good that does not mean that ayurvedic medicines do not treat gout. Try this treatment to get benefit within 30 days- a) kokilakshadi kashaya 2 tsp twice daily. B) mahatiktaka ghrita 1 tsp twice daily. C) kaishor guggulu 2 tab twice. D) avoid spicy diet, curd, and late night workout. E) treat digestive problems first if having. G) other medications like painkiller anti hypertensives may worsen your condition so rule out them first.

Try contrast bath (dipping ankles in hot and ice cold water alternatively) for 15 mins and elevating the legs while sleeping. Also perform simple ankle and toe movement.

Drink decoction of dashmoola herbs and Panchakol herbs boiled separately. Drink each 20 ml each. Put 20 ml Erand sneh at night in one of these. Light massage with heated Mahanarayan oil and Mahavishgarbh oil mixed together. Hit water bath after two hrs at least.
