Pigmentation - How to Manage It?

Pigmentation - How to Manage It?

Favorite pastime of most of the people would be to look at the mirror and analyze the skin. While acne is the most common problem, next in line would be pigmentation. One could have light patches or dark patches on the skin. The color of the skin is due to a pigment known as melanin. Greater the amount of melanin in the skin, darker the complexion. Skin color depends on the following:

  1. Age
  2. Genetics
  3. Ethnicity
  4. Degree of sun exposure
  5. Skin care routine
  6. Stress levels
  7. Hormonal levels (related to menstruation, pregnancy, breast feeding, menopause, etc.)
  8. Food habits

Hypopigmentation is less common and it is better to seek medical advice to rule out other medical conditions. Hyperpigmentation where there are increased amounts of melanin on the skin. This is quite common and happens with increased sun exposure and age. The most common types are as below:

  1. Melesma: Caused by hormonal changes, is very commonly seen during pregnancy.
  2. Lentigo: Multiple black spots or freckles. This could be caused by ageing or due to sun exposure.
  3. Management of hyperpigmentation: This involves two-fold approach with preventing and treatment

Tips for preventing hyperpigmentation:
Reducing sun damage and using optimal sun protection is the best way to prevent hyperpigmentation. The sunscreen should have at least an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15. A common misbelief is that sun damage happens during the bright days. However, even sun during cloudy weather causes damage, so avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible if you have are at risk of pigmentation.

Regularly scrub and exfoliate the skin to remove the dead cells from the top layers. Dry or sensitive skin can be exfoliated 1 to 2 times weekly, and oily skin can be exfoliated 2 to 3 times weekly. This helps constantly remove the top dead layers and fresh skin cells to come to the top, giving a fresher, more youthful look.

Treatment for Hyperpigmentation Pigmentation is hereditary, and so improved skin care routine is useful in improving appearance. When buying skin care products, check whether the SPF is greater than 15 at the minimum, and there are other essential ingredients like alpha hydroxyl acids, glycolic acid, and lactic acid.

These help in skin regeneration and producing a clearer skin with reduced discoloration. Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and kojic acid are also useful in treating hyperpigmentation. Dietary changes like egg white mask, citrus fruit application, potato peel can help in reducing pigmentation.

Other dietary changes to adhere to include a diet that is less in oil and refined sugars. A fresh fruit and vegetable loaded diet, adequate hydration, good skin care, and proper sun protection can go a long way in reducing pigmentation. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a cosmetic-plastic surgeon.

  • Keep skin moist by using soap free cleansers.
  • Sunscreen lotion must be used even if sun is not visible.
  • Waterproof light make up will be a better choice.
  • Nails should be kept clean by regular manicure, pedicures.
  • Use luke warm water instead of cold water.

I am 16 year old doctors consult me to do some stretching exercises tell me some exercises for increase height.

I am 16 year old doctors consult me to do some stretching exercises tell me some exercises for increase height.
You asked very good question, as increasing height through exercise, as medication for height will always harm your body in some way. There are few exercises which can increase you height if regularly practiced- -vertical hanging: all you need to have is a solid bar strong enough to hold an individual, fixed at least 7 feet above the ground such that the distance between your feet and the floor is atleast 4-6 inches. Hold your arms neither closer nor wider and start hanging. Hold as long as you can, and as you begin to tire, slowly swing back and forth and try to touch the ground with your feet. -ankle weight- sit on a high chair and tie weights to your ankle. Start with small weights initially and gradually increase as you go on. Allow your legs to stretch down with the pressure of the weights. Once completed, remove the weights and relax your legs by kicking your legs gently for 5-10 times, and then vigorously for 5-10 times. - pilates roll over: this is an excellent workout to stretch your spine and lengthen your upper body. Lie on your back with your arms along your sides, palms down. With your legs together, extend them straight up toward the ceiling and bend them backwards so that they touch the floor. It may not be possible to touch the floor at first, but you can do this by practice. Do these exercises regularly for at least 10 minutes daily, and take protein rich diet, and you will find the result.

Diabetes - Types and Tips to Control Your Blood Sugar Level

MBBS, MD - General Medicine

Diabetes - Types and Tips to Control Your Blood Sugar Level

Diabetes might not be the end of the road for you. While it is a chronic disorder, there are a number of steps you can take to minimize its effects. Before that you should know what diabetes is and its various types.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder where the sugar in your blood is not metabolized by the body. This leads to a situation wherein sugar accumulates in your blood; this condition is known as high blood sugar. Now this can happen in two ways:

  1. Type 1 Diabetes: In this type, the beta cells of the pancreas that produce insulin (hormone that metabolizes sugar) are destroyed by the immune system of the body. This leads to reduction in insulin levels, causing blood sugar to shoot up.

  2. Type 2 Diabetes: Type 2 diabetes is a condition wherein the body cannot effectively utilize the insulin to metabolize sugar. This again leads to accumulation of sugar in the blood.

Apart from these two types, there is a third type that is known as ‘gestational diabetes’. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy wherein the body produces hormones that inhibit insulin.

Now that you know the various types of diabetes, it is time to focus on the preventive measures. The various tips for high blood sugar level are:

  1. Steer Clear of Sugar: Think of sugar as your enemy, as it is something that you have to stay away from. Sugar will only add to the high blood sugar content that you are already diagnosed with.

  2. Welcome whole grains with open arms: Refined grains are a big no; that means no more of those delicious white bread sandwiches. Instead, opt for whole grains such as brown bread, brown rice and oats. Refined grains come under simple carbohydrates that cause your blood sugar levels to shoot up.

  3. Avoid over consumption of fruits: While fruits are healthy, they do contain fructose which is again, a form of sugar. So, yes eat them but limit their consumption to one serving a day.

  4. High time you realize nothing substitutes exercise: Regular exercise can help you burn calories and also keep your blood sugar levels low. It allows you to maintain healthy weight levels and improves your overall wellbeing.

  5. Take no stress: Stress has been shown to increase blood sugar, so if you are feeling stressed and can’t seem to get out of with, take steps to deal with it. Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation that can help you reduce stress and improve focus. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Eat small but frequent meals. Avoid long gaps in between meals. Avoid junk as far as possible. Exercise at least 4 times a week. Lastly be committed. Remember it's a lifestyle change and not a one time thing. It's a balanced intake that will last you longer. All the so called diets will only give you muscle and bone loss. The fats will remain as it is. So, try to first follow this seemingly simple tips. I am sure it will at least help you with some initial weight loss.
