How To Deal With Obesity In Children?

How To Deal With Obesity In Children?

Research shows that overweight children have a higher chances of developing chronic health problems such as hypertension, asthma, high cholesterol, and even cancer as they grow up. Apart from these health conditions, being obese can cause severe self-esteem problems as well. In short, obesity in children, more specifically childhood obesity, can affect the overall physical, mental and emotional health of your child.

Here are 5 easy ways to prevent your child from falling into the perils of obesity.

1. Develop healthy eating habits in your child
Encouraging your little ones to develop healthy eating habits is vital for maintaining optimum body weight. Instead of high sugar and high fat foods, a child’s diet should consist of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain foods (such as oats, quinoa and wheat). Proteins such as lean meats, lentils, beans and fish should be included in his/her eating plan as well. Most importantly, serving food in the right portion sizes will ensure your child is getting the right amount of nutrients, while preventing him/her from consuming empty calories. Inculcate these eating habits in them right from the time they are toddlers so that it stays with them as they get older.

2. Make your child avoid calorie-rich foods
Getting your child to avoid fatty, sugary and salty foods can also prevent him from tipping over the weighing scale. Present before your child low sugar and low fat alternatives that he/she would enjoy eating such as apples, bananas, carrots, etc.

3. Encourage your child to pursue physical activity
Try to encourage your child to engage in some form of physical activity for about 60 minutes every day. From brisk walking, swimming, dancing to skipping - your child could opt for any of these physical activities. Having your child lead an active life can see him/her enjoying a number of health benefits like respite from stress, strengthening of his/her bones and muscles and decrease in blood pressure, to name a few.

4. Put a limit on your child’s TV time
When it comes to the time that your child may spend before the TV, computer or other gizmos, it should be not more than 2 hours a day. Instead, devise fun activities wherein your child as well other members of the family can take part in or ones in which your child does not need a company.

5. Ensure your child gets enough sleep
Lastly, a good night’s rest that lasts about 9-12 hours is vital for optimal weight maintenance. Studies reveal that children who slept for fewer hours were more at risk of being obese. This is because less sleep causes fatigue, leading to a decrease in physical activity and therefore, use of energy.

My daughter is 13.5 years old she has very poor appetite. She does not eat anything in morning (says will vomit or having vomiting feeling ), basically we have seen its more of anxiety of going to school that she avoids eating .on weekends she does not complain of vomiting but no eating. Her weight gain and height gain last 5-10 years is below lowest curve. Worried of both, suggest anything for hunger and height.

You have rightly said that it is all due to anxiety for going to school. It is easy to over come this problem by awaking her in the morning earlier by 15-20 minutes so that she can take her breakfast easily. There is no medicine which can change this habit. Increase frequency of her diet in stead of increasing quantity of diet which shall be helpful in gaining growth.

Causes Of Uterine Fibroids And Its Ayurvedic Remedies!

Causes Of Uterine Fibroids And Its Ayurvedic Remedies!

Uterine fibroids are benign growths, which originate in the walls of the uterus. They are also known as 'myomas' or 'fibromyomas' and their sizes tend to vary. You may not realize that you have a fibroid as they do not cause many problems.

The causes of uterine fibroids are:

  1. Hormones: Hormones that stimulate the uterine lining to prepare it for the menstrual cycle are known to aid in the development of uterine fibroids.
  2. Genetic changes: Genetic changes in the cells of the uterus may lead to this disorder.

Ayurveda is a natural method of treatment that focuses on using various herbal remedies to cure a disorder. The ayurvedic remedies for uterine fibroids aim to boost the immune system and balance the hormones in the body. This allows the ovaries to function properly and thus allows the uterus to remain healthy.

The various ayurvedic remedies for uterine fibroids are:

  1. Curcumin: This remedy helps the body get rid of the free radicals due to its high antioxidant content. It helps in reducing the inflammation in the uterus and thus treat uterine fibroids.
  2. Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha has medicinal properties that boost your overall wellbeing in addition to boosting your immune system. It is also known to improve the functioning of the brain and treat impotency.
  3. Diet: The diet should consist mostly of fiber and whole grains. Alcohol and saturated fats should be limited. You should eat foods, which are pungent, bitter and astringent so that the metabolism is smooth; this prevents formation of uterine fibroids.
  4. Lifestyle changesYou should restrict smoking and alcohol consumption as they tend to aggravate free radical damage in the body. You should also follow a regimen that incorporates regular exercise and a balanced diet. This will enhance your wellbeing and allow you to remain healthy.
  5. Panchakarma: Panchakarma is an Ayurvedic remedy that helps in correcting hormonal imbalances in the body. Correction of hormonal imbalances helps in preventing uterine fibroids. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ayurveda.

Hello lybrate-user. Stargardt is one of the most common macular dystrophy wherein the gene responsible for removal of toxic metabolites is absent which results in accumulation of lipofuschin leading to damage to photoreceptors which are responsible for vision. Currently, there is no treatment for the disease. Wearing sunglasses and hats outdoors and blue-light blocking glasses when exposed to artificial light sources reduces the buildup of lipofuscin. Use of low vision aid also helps. Antioxidats, isotretinoin, gene therapy are all in the experimental stage for treatment modality. I would recommend you to see a ocular geneticist for any recent research update and for genetic counselling.

No, excessive sugar in diet coupled with poor oral hygeine results in dental caries. Avoid candies, regularly brush twice a day & visit a dentist to know extent of damage.

Celiac Disease (Wheat allergy)

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), Pediatric Gastroenterology
Pediatrician, Delhi
In northern India nearly one percent (one in hundred) of the population is allergic to wheat. The problem remains unrecognized for years as most people and doctors have no idea how to diagnose or treat this disease.
If your child is suffering from frequent loose motions, is anemic, not gaining weight or is the shortest child in class, she/he should be immediately screened for celiac disease. This can be done by a simple blood test which is available in most cities with accredited labs. For more information, you can contact a gastroenetrologist

What is the home remedy for running nose of a child. Please share a remedy which I can do at home.
To comfort a child with running nose give him humidified air with warm water. You can keep room humidified with water vapours. If the child is more than 1 year use honey. For child younger than 1 year honey poses risk of botulism.

Concept is demand feeds. So if child is demanding. Despite of adequate feeds supply. Mom shall feed. However signs of adequate milk supply is. Initially heavy breast gets weightless after properly fed baby. And baby gets at least sound sleep of 2 hours approx. So if you have above signs just don't worry. Your baby is doing fine.
