I have a 10 years old boy suspect adhd. He take atomoxetine hydrochloride for 1 month. Any other remedy is available which has no side effects?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Atomoxetine may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or actions in children and teenagers with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd). Talk with the patient's doctor to be sure that the benefits of using atomoxetine outweigh the risks. Families and caregivers must closely watch patients who take atomoxetine. It is important to keep in close contact with the patient's doctor. Tell the doctor right away if the patient has symptoms such as worsened depression, suicidal thoughts, or changes in behavior. Discuss any questions with the patient's doctor. There is no cure for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd), but treatment can help relieve the symptoms and make the condition much less of a problem in day-to-day life. Adhd can be treated using medication or therapy, but a combination of both is often the best way to treat it. There are four types of medication licensed for the treatment of adhd: methylphenidate dexamfetamine lisdexamfetamine atomoxetine these medications are not a permanent cure for adhd, but they can help someone with the condition concentrate better, be less impulsive, feel calmer, and learn and practise new skills. Some medications need to be taken every day, but some can be taken just on school days. Treatment breaks are occasionally recommended, to assess whether the medication is still needed. You can ask me privately and keep me as your family doctor.

Symptoms of ADHD

Symptoms of ADHD

If you have noticed your child to be restless and anxious all the time, it might look cute as the child is highly energetic, but it could be a cause for concern at the same time. It is not normal and the child could be having ADHD that is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. As the name suggests, it is a disorder with deficiency of attention and in which the child is always hyperactive.

ADHD is a disorder in which the symptoms usually show up before the age of seven. It is characterized by a group of behavioral symptoms that include inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. The impact of these symptoms is felt extensively where his overall self-esteem is affected, be it at home, preschool or school, academics or extracurricular activities and in interpersonal relationships.

The most common symptoms, which are almost diagnostic of ADHD are:

  1. Inability to hold attention: The child's attention span is very short and it is very difficult to keep them engaged on one particular thing.
  2. Increased restlessness: The child would be extremely restless and gets distracted easily.
  3. Fidgeting: The child would be seen constantly fidgeting with his fingers.

The following are the less common ones:

  1. Learning disability is rare, but can happen. However, the good news is that it does not affect the child's intelligence.
  2. Sleep disorders
  3. Difficulty in following directions
  4. Poor executive functioning skills
  5. Disorganization, which can lead to poor motor coordination and impaired movements
  6. ADHD kids tend to forget things very easily and need help with coordinating movements
  7. The child suffering from ADHD could easily tire and/or feel lethargic with very low energy levels. This can lead to the child procrastinating things and not wanting to do things on priority basis
  8. These children also have difficulties with fine motor and cognitive skills and so there is delay in their overall participation in games.

While these are the pressing symptoms of ADHD, occupational therapy can play a significant role in managing the child in the following ways. As a first step, the caregiver should have a detailed discussion with the school staff and any other people with whom the child interacts significantly.

This will help identify areas that need support from an Occupational Therapy, which are the following:

  1. Support with gross and/or fine motor skills
  2. Support with improving handwriting
  3. Support with engaging in playing sports and games
  4. Support in engaging in social activities
  5. Improving sensory processing difficulties
  6. Improving visual perception
  7. Support in adapting to the environment
  8. Teaching strategies to participate in various social and academic activities

So, while an ADHD child is definitely a cause for concern, proper support from family can help manage the condition.

your daughter is grossely undernourished (ideal weight at 4 yrs is 16 kg). She does not reqiure any appetite stimulants but sufficient diet given at frequent intervals in gradually increasing quantities.Appetite is a natural reflex in body stimulated by body requrements, but it is diminished in sickness & chronic malnutrition. She will improve if you feed her regular intervals in gradually increasing amounts. It may take around 6 months to catch up.Make sure she is not having any chronic illness.

Babies have limited means of communication. They can gurgle, they can sometimes smile, and they can cry. And cry they do ? sometimes for hours on end. This can sometimes be extremely frustrating, especially when your little one doesn?t respond to any of your efforts to stop the crying.

Some of the reasons why babies cry include hunger, a need to be held, feeling tired, feeling too cold or too hot, in need of a nappy change, or because they?re feeling sick and need something to make them feel better.

General Physician,
Please send the reports to me so as to understand all details. Hyperammonemia is a metabolic condition characterized by elevated levels of ammonia in the blood. Increased entry of ammonia to the brain is a primary cause of neurologic disorders, such as congenital deficiencies of urea cycle enzymes, hepatic encephalopathies, reye syndrome, several other metabolic disorders, and some toxic encephalopathies.

Take the baby and the mother to the nearest PEDIATRICIAN. They will teach the breastfeeding position and breast related issues if any. Usually occurs after the 1st delivery. Remember mother milk is best for the baby and there is no substitute.. Formula feeds are last in worst case scenario. Why we presses more because mother milk has both short term and long term good effect. You can google it online.

What is the correct age for babies to stop breastfeed? does weaning increase weight? best solid food for babies?

MBBS, MD
Pediatrician, Nagpur
Hi. Baby should be given exclusive breast feed till 6 months after 6 months we should start complimentary feeds. Our aim should be that baby should take all the home based food by one year of age. Breast feeding should be continued till 2 years of age. The complimentary feeds at six months should be semiliquid and bland and gradually we should increase the consistency and introduce different tastes.

Hello, Yes you should. Any moisturising cream contains harmful chemical ingredients which are only for external use and can cause health hazards specially in case of new born if ingested in excess.

Hello, My son is five month old he is in his sixth month as temp is rising everyday what should I do to save him from dehydration as he is on breast feed only please help can I give him water? Or something else.

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS
Pediatrician, Ponda
Hello, it's great to hear you are continuing breast feeding, keep it on. If baby is active passing urine more than 5 times in 24 hours then it's enough milk. If you want then fresh home made juices, kanji water can be tried. Babies in exclusive breast feed don't need single drop of water even in hottest summer.

My daughter is 14 months old. She had undergone surgery for not passing her first stool due to meconium ileus. I had came to know that meconium ileus will be due to cystic fibrosis. Please inform me about the symptoms of cystic fibrosis and other reasons for having meconium ileus.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Meconium ileus (mi) is a condition where the content of the baby's bowel (meconium) is extremely sticky and causes the bowel to be blocked at birth. In most cases the bowel itself is complete and intact but it is just the inside that is blocked. In some cases there has been a twist of the bowel before birth, which has caused the bowel to be blind ending (an atresia). Most babies with meconium ileus (90%) have cystic fibrosis (cf) and it is this that has caused the sticky meconium. Meconium ileus is a rare condition affecting only 1 in 25, 000 babies. For further doubts and regular advice on child rearing as your family doctor you can ask personally.

Its very urgent please advice me.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

Steroids are not advisable to tender skin in my opinion. There are pure coconut oil or preparations made thereof which are suitable for babies' skin. Pure organic herbal powder of Rubia cordifolia and curcumin extract 500 mg each may be licked by baby with honey and see safe changes yourself.
