Facial Demodicidosis - Signs You Just Cannot Ignore!

Facial Demodicidosis - Signs You Just Cannot Ignore!

Facial demodicosis is not a condition in itself-it is more like a preceding cause of a skin problem. Demodicosis occurs due to tiny mites, called demodex, living in the follicles, especially on the anterior ear canals, eyelashes, around the nose, cheeks and foreheads.

Primarily, two types of mites are responsible for a range of skin diseases: Demodex brevis and Demodex folliculorum. D. brevis lives in the sebum (oil) glands that are attached to tiny hair follicles, and get their sustenance from the oil glands whereas D. folliculorum is mostly found in the eyelashes. Adults and children above 5 years of age are commonly affected by demodex mites.

Signs & Symptoms
If you have facial demodicosis, you may display the following symptoms:

  • Itching and irritation in the eye.
  • Eyelid dermatitis (The skin over the eyelid scales over).
  • Thickening of lid.
  • Lack of lashes.
  • Conjunctival inflammation (conjunctivitis).
  • Decreased vision.
  • Usually, certain diseases can be caused by these microscopic mites. Some common examples of skin diseases include:
  • Rosacea (Skin condition characterized by redness and pus-filled bumps)
  • Perioral dermatitis (Skin inflammation around the mouth)
  • Blepharitis (Eyelid inflammation)

Treatment
The demodex mites can only survive in hair follicles. So the main treatment is to stop their proliferation. For this, your doctor will use a scrub to remove dead cells from the lashes, and then spread macadamia nut oil or tea tree oil to destroy any egg. Alternatively, rubbing alcohol, baby shampoo or mercury oxide ointment may be used. Using mild shampoos, cleansing face with non-soap cleanser, avoiding greasy makeup and exfoliation are some home prevention strategies for facial demodicosis.

In order to enhance your skin you need to take care of your skin from outside. You may use a cream or moisturizer that contains Alpha Hydroxy Acid's (AHA's) like glycolic acid, lactic acid etc. AHA's exfoliate superficial dead skin cells and renew it with newer younger cells. Continued use of AHA's keeps skin in a state of continued renewal. This renewed skin is healthier, lighter and brighter. You may also opt for a few sessions of chemical peeling, particularly glycolic peel, from nearest approachable dermatologist. Glycolic peel utilizes a higher concentration of glycolic acid as compared to that present in creams/ moisturizers. The concentration that is available in peels is 20%, 35% 50% and 70%. Whereas creams contain just 6%, 8% or 10% of glycolic acid. I also suggest you to use a broad spectrum sunscreen, throughout the day. It should have both UVA as well as UV B coverage. Regular use of broad spectrum sunscreen would prevent tanning and also delay skin ageing i.e appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Some sunscreens are also fortified with vitamin C which has skin lightening as well as antiageing properties. Besides topical creams and chemical peeling sessions you may also take a few sessions of microdermabrasion to achieve the desired results. I suggest you to visit a dermatologist in your vicinity for more details and the needful. Regards.

Pimples or acne is caused when Hair follicles in your skin gets clogged due to oil, dirt, bacteria or dead skin. Acne generally occurs in people with oily skin but other factors like dead skin, dirt, pollution or hormonal imbalance can also cause acne in people with normal skin. Acne can be reduced or controlled by including some habits in your daily life style. 1. Keep your skin clean – Wash your face daily with an oil control face wash. You can also use a good AHA glow face wash that not only controls oil but also removes dead skin and bacteria. You can also use a good tea tree face wash. By shedding the old dead skin, your skin feels rejuvenated and clean. Apply a good toner, like tea tree toner after washing your face. After toning, apply an oil free and non- comedogenic cream on face. Last but not the least, apply a good sunscreen with minimum 30 spf daily. 2. Face packs – Occasionally apply good oil controlling face packs. Multani mitti + Lemon + yogurt is a good face packs for oily skin beauties. You can apply organic apple cider for 5 minutes after washing your face to kill the bacteria that clogs your pores. Green Tea can also be used as a toner once a day. 3. Diet – Most important thing is diet. Eat fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables daily. Reduce junk food intake, colas, alcohol and soda and consume whole grains. Keeping your digestive system healthy keeps your body and blood toxins free. Drink green tea, lemon juice, orange juice and food items containing Vitamin C as it is responsible for maintaining good skin health. Drink at least 10 glasses of water every day. 4. Exercise – Exercises, yoga, suryanamaskar improves the blood circulation and balances hormones. They keep skin healthy and boost body’s immunity to deal with several issues and not just acne. Include it in your daily regime.
