I'm epilepsy patient my Dr. said after delivery I vl allri8, is dis truth. Nd this disorder is dangours for me? Life ka khtra hai? Pls explain.

MBBS, MD, DM - Neurology
Neurologist, Chennai
If you have been diagnosed with epilepsy before your pregnancy itself, it is possible to control your epilepsy with proper medications so that you do not get any fits (which may pose danger to both of you). However there is a small possibility of your child developing few problems either due to your epilepsy or your medications. It will be monitored with regular scans and blood tests if needed by your obstetrician. Have a frank talk with your obstetrician and neurologist. Please do not stop your epilepsy medications without consulting your doctor.

Why ativan is being taken at 11 pm? so naturally she will get sleep around 3 am. Why so late going to bed? as that is your main concern. You have to change the daily routine. She should have dinner around 7 - 7.30 pm and take ativan tab and go to bed around 9 - 9.30 pm for the medicine to be effective. To achive this she has to stop watching tv by 8 pm and read some books or magazines or meditate and maintain general relaxed mood. To do that other family members have to cooperate to maintain the peaceful atmosphere and help her in maintaing the timings. Do not get on to the bed until bed time. As she is practicing meditation, have it in the evening also and learn and practice" bhraamari" yoga practice morning and evening which will help her to fall asleep. For all this the other family members have to cooperate in closing the tv and maintaining silence. Change will not come in a single day, but by persistance she can have good sleep.

My mother 56 years old is on epileptic medication (eptoin 3 tablets daily) since 3 yrs. And wants to discontinue now as there are no seizures. Is it safe to discontinue? If yes then how.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Nagpur
If your mother is on regular medications with eptoin 300 mg daily for the last three years and has not had any seizure since 3 years. (i. E. Its 3 years complete after she had her last seizure), stopping medications can be considered. However it is always advisable to consult your treating physician to gradually taper the dose according to age, serum drug levels and eeg status. If she has a breakthrough seizure she might have to continue the withdrawn dose.

I suffered from sciatic problem now I am fine but my right leg is still numb, I am unable to fell any sensation on my right leg. What should I do?

I suffered from sciatic problem now I am fine but my right leg is still numb, I am unable to fell any sensation on my...
Hello lybrate user, sciatica is a radiating pain along the course of the nerve. Usually for the lower back to the back of thigh and then further down to the foot. This happens because of a compression on the nerve roots which leads to symptoms of tingling and numbness in your feet, and other functional deficits the nerves like sensory loss and weakness in the limbs. When this pressure of the nerves is accompanied by inflammation of nerve itself, it gives rise to the radiating pain or sciatica. This inflammation comes down with anti inflammatory drugs and rest, so the sciatica is no longer present but compression on the nerves remains so you might still be having sensory loss. But still your nerve might be recovering from the compression and you regain sensation with neurotonic drugs and time if the compression has also been resolved. But this decision making is complex and can be done by a spine surgeon and only after a thorough clinical assessment. I would suggest you get an mri done and consult a spine surgeon as soon as possible. Hope this helps.

What is the ayurvedic treatment for migraine?

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda,
If there is a burning sensation with you migraine headache, apply a paste of ground clay or sandalwood powder mixed with rose water. In case of migraine headache due to inflamed sinuses, inhale steam with vinegar added to the water. Mix teaspoon of clove powder with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon oil. Apply this paste on the affected area for 20-30 minutes. Avoid hot, spicy foods, fermented foods, white sugar, white flour products, and sour or citrus fruits, because they aggravate the Pitta in your body. Drink more water and eat more fiber, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. Avoid excessive sugar or salt, refined foods, animal products (meats and dairy), caffeine, tea, and alcohol, as these items will further lead to aggravation of Pitta. Avoid direct exposure to the sun, as migraine headaches are predominantly a Pitta disorder and can be triggered by the hot sun. Head massage with Bhringraj Oil is also beneficial. This massage gives a calming effect to your nervous system.
