Prenatal, Antenatal And Postnatal Care - An Intro!

DGO, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Chennai
Prenatal, Antenatal And Postnatal Care - An Intro!

There are three stages of caring for an expecting mother: prenatal, intranatal, postnatal care. This is essential to ensure smooth pregnancy and labour and to keep the mother healthy after giving birth. This care is a combined effort between the doctor and the expectant couple. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you are expecting an addition to your family.

Prenatal care from the moment you realize that you are pregnant, a woman must start taking extra care of her body. This reduces the risks in your pregnancy and at the time of labour. But even before planning a pregnancy, it is important that couples should consult with the doctor, in order to avoid any complications in future. Thus you should ensure that regular check up not just during the pregnancy, but also before the pregnancy is equally important, so that your doctor can rule out complications arising due to factors, such as Thalassemia, Thyroid, Blood Sugar and PCOS, etc.

The main objectives of prenatal care are:

  1. To maintain the health of the mother
  2. Detect high risk cases
  3. Foresee complications and find ways to prevent them
  4. Reduce anxiety associated with delivery

Thus, an important part of prenatal care is to visit your gynaecologist regularly. These visits will be scheduled according to your age and stage of pregnancy. A few other points to keep in mind are:

  1. Stop smoking and stay away from passive smoking as well
  2. Stop drinking alcohol
  3. Take folic acid supplements and multivitamins
  4. Avoid contact with toxic chemicals like insecticides etc.
  5. Ensure your vaccination is up to date
  6. Avoid X-rays
  7. Do not start or stop any medication without informing your doctor first
  8. Eat healthy food and drink plenty of water
  9. Exercise regularly for half an hour daily
  10. Get plenty of rest
  11. Avoid stress
  12. Educate yourself about childbirth

Intranatal care refers to care given to the mother and baby at the time of delivery. The main objectives here are:

  1. Cleanliness
  2. Smooth delivery without injuring mother or baby
  3. Preventing complications
  4. Delivery resuscitation for the baby

There are a number of ways to deliver a baby and whatever you choose, you must ensure the presence of a doctor at your side, while delivering a baby. Your doctor will determine the position of the fetus and help you through your delivery.

Postnatal care is essential for 6-8 weeks after the baby is born. During this period, the mother goes through a number of physical and emotional changes and thus requires rest, nutrition and vaginal care. The main objectives here are:

  1. Prevent postpartum complications
  2. Restore mother to optimal health
  3. Ensure problem free breastfeeding

Sharing responsibility is essential for the health of the mother, after delivery. Get as much sleep as possible and pay attention to what you eat. Do not try and lose your pregnancy weight instantly. Schedule a checkup with your doctor six weeks after delivery to ensure your vagina has healed properly. Additionally abstain from intercourse at this time. With proper care, every stage of your pregnancy can be a beautiful experience.

I advise you to do meditation for mental strength by doing slow and deep breathing relaxation exercises in the morning. Take proper balanced vegetarian diet. Take 8 to 10 glasses of water daily. Avoid garlic and red chilly at home and avoid non veg and eggs. Keep your weight normal as compared to your height. These will help you in getting pregnant.

Showing interest towards pornography in teenage is quite normal but yes one should not be addicted to it. The addiction can lead to many personal and social problems. It will divert one's mind and one can not concentrate on studies and work. Ask your friend to not be alone, let her spend more time with family and friends. A person tries to watch porn, if he/she is alone and lonely. No one cannot become pregnant by just watching the porn.

I had sex with my husband 6th day of my period. I want to know when I got pregnant or which day I got pregnant. Help me.
If you have a regular cycle of 30 days then doing sex from 10 th to 20 th day is the best for conceiving. You may do sex every alternate day during that time.

We had a intercourse yesterday which was unprotected bt she took I pill after 2 hrs is their any chance of pregnancy ...
I-Pills are not 100% effective. So there is always a small possibility of failure. I would advice her to do a urine pregnancy test just in case she misses her periods next month.

Ask her to reduce weight. Now get an urine pregnancy test done first and then go for a check up by gynecologist.

Hello I a suffering some allergy on front part of penis. Please tell me some solution of this.

MBBS, DNB (Dermatology)
Dermatologist, Mumbai
You could be having Fungal infection which tends to affect folds of the skin, moist areas like groins, armpits, genitals, etc. Our skin protects us from fungal/yeast attack, but any cut or break in the continuity of the skin can allow penetration of fungus. It gives rise to rash, eruptions, redness, burning, intolerable itching and abnormal discharges at times. Fungal infection tends to last for many years if not treated well. It is also contagious. Please consult on private chat for prescription treatment.

Hi lybrate-user. There was no need for I pill when her periods had ended just today. Casual and frequent use of I pill can harm her hormonal imbalance and alter her next 2-3 cycles. Please avoid such casual use of I pill without medical supervision. Please understand that they are hormone containing pills which have side effects. 3 days before and after a period are absolutely safe and there is no risk of pregnancy anyways. There was no need of the I pill.

Tablets are effective till 60 days or 8 weeks if course is taken properly wait for bleeding to start. Get an ultrasound done to confirm gestation medicines don't work after 8 weeks or it leads to incomplete abortion.

It give your Hemoglobin concentration in blood and the HbA1c gives a measure of what your average blood glucose level has been in the previous 2–3 months. HbA1c is a diagnostic of diabetes as well, which is confirmed when fasting blood glucose levels are 126 mg/dl or higher on two or more tests.
