Vitamin E - 12 Reasons Why It Is Important!

B.Sc.(Hons), P.G.Dietetics

Vitamin E - 12 Reasons Why It Is Important!

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin which in total has 8 compounds, of which only one compound is useful to humans. This is also known as alpha-tocopherol and plays a vital role in antioxidation process and is believed to improve the overall ageing process.

Read on to know more about its benefits, functions, and sources.

  1. Vitamin E that is absorbed by the intestine is transferred to the liver, from where only alpha-tocopherol gets re-released into the system in small amounts. So, if your diet contains the other 7 variants, they are excreted by the liver (not required in humans).
  2. This active vitamin E controls the oxidation process in cells and prevents the release of free radicals, which is the culprit in all inflammatory processes. These can cause heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and stroke. This process is also accelerated by the environmental factors like pollution, UV rays, smoking, etc.
  3. Vitamin E is also shown to dilate blood vessels and prevent platelet clogging.
  4. Vitamin E is useful in preventing and treating diabetes and its related complications. Of note, diabetes is also considered as a chronic inflammatory process.
  5. The nervous system diseases including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and epilepsy can benefit from Vitamin E. It reduces overall cognitive declines and helps in these disease conditions
  6. Women are particularly benefitted from vitamin E, including premenstrual cramps, painful periods, hot flashes with breast cancer, eclampsia during pregnancy, and pregnancy complications
  7. Given their role in energy formation, they help improve endurance, energy levels, and improv muscle strength and reduce muscle damage.
  8. The antioxidant effect is useful in reversing ageing skin changes including wrinkles and fine lines. Vitamin E is used widely in skin care products including creams and lotions and helps in regeneration of skin and tissue.
  9. It is useful to control hair loss, which could be due to multiple reasons, including chemotherapy or side effect of drugs.
  10. It is useful in treating allergies, asthma, respiratory infections, and skin allergies.
  11. Eye diseases like cataracts and macular degeneration which are generally age-related can be controlled with adequate intake of vitamin E.
  12. Taken with other antioxidants like niacin, it is helpful in controlling the buildup of cholesterol.

Natural food sources contain enough amounts of this vitamin to meet normal daily requirements, and so consume the following.

  1. Green leafy vegetables, legumes, and vegetable oils
  2. Whole grains and fortified cereals
  3. Fruits and nuts and seeds
  4. Seafood, poultry, and meat
  5. Eggs
  6. Dairy products including fat-free or low-fat milk
  7. Seafood

Given its wide availability, deficiency is rare, but supplements may be required for premature babies with low-weight and in people with some genetic disorders. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dietitian-nutritionist.

General Physician,
It may be piles which can not be cured completely by medicines. Surgery is needed. Please keep in mind that even after surgery, it may have recurrance after few years. What is needed is you should be very cautious about your diet. Hard stools must be avoided. For that, add more of fibrous diet to your regular meals. Eat more of salad. Hope helped you. Regards.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Carbohydrates as substitute to saturated fats not the answer.

More than 20 prospective studies have addressed components of diet and the risk of heart disease.

The type of fat consumed appears to be more important than the amount of total fat.

Trans fatty acids increase risk of heart disease while polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats decrease risk.

There is a controversy about whether it is optimal to substitute saturated fats with carbohydrates. An increase in carbohydrate tends to reduce the level of good high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol in addition to total and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Thus, the reduction in heart disease risk may be less than predicted by the reduction of saturated fat alone.

Observational studies have consistently shown that individuals consuming diets high in vegetables and fruits, which are rich in antioxidant vitamins, had a reduced risk of heart disease.

Results of a number of randomized trials are now available and show largely no significant clinical benefits of antioxidant vitamins on heart disease.

Supplemental vitamin C, E, and beta carotene cannot be recommended in the primary prevention of CHD.

Taking supplements without clinical benefits could, in theory, increase the risk if individuals mistakenly avoid therapeutic lifestyle changes or drug therapies with proven benefits.

Is it helpful to eat something sweet or sugar while starting to have an headache because of empty stomach or not having meals properly. Because I think it is helpful because our mind's only fuel is glucose and eating some sugar or having something sweet would help to get energy to our mind amd hence would help get instant relief. What do you think about this?

General Physician,
headache includes the blood vessels, muscles and nerves of the head and neck. They may also result from changes in chemical activity in the brain. Primary headaches can occur when pain-sensitive structures in the head do not work properly. Common primary headaches include migraines, cluster headaches and tension headaches.

Dear lybrate user, you are very sad, disappointed and feeling frustrated and hopeless. You are not depressed. But you need to talk to someone about your intense feelings. You might get into depression, if you continue like this. If you want to avoid your family and friends, then talk to a counsellor and share your burden. You will feel lighter. Once your intense emotions are released, you will be able to think rationally and then you will be able find out options to resolve your issues which are making you cry so often. Take care.

I am suffering from cough for last 3 weeks. Should I buy any cough syrup or consult any doctor.

BAMS, MD Ayurveda
Sexologist, Lonavala
One of the simplest home remedies for a cough is to cut onions. Breathing in the strong vapors can help stop coughing. You can also make a cough syrup from baked onion juice, comfrey tea and honey. Drink it daily to get relief from a dry cough. Another option is to combine one-half teaspoon of onion juice with one teaspoon of pure honey. Swallow this solution at least twice a day to alleviate a cough and soothe your throat.

Dear Viraj, General Anxiety disorder treatment consists of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, life style changes, relaxation therapy and meditation. Once you learn how to manage your anxiety yourself with the help of the above treatment methods, You will be cured. The process is a bit lengthy and could take any period between one year to 2 years according to the depth of the anxiety problem and the circumstances at which the patient lives. Keep the period of treatment in mind, prepare yourself to take up the treatment and consult a psychologist online or in person. Take care.
