Here is home remedy for brighter teeth--- mix several teaspoons of baking soda with enough fresh lemon juice (or water) to make a paste. Wipe your teeth and any extra saliva off of them with a paper towel. Put a good amount of paste onto your toothbrush and apply. Leave the paste on for 1 minute, then rinse, so as to avoid the acid effecting enamel. If you are using just water you can leave it on for up to 3 minutes. For faster result you can go for teeth bleaching from dentist.

I frequently have headaches and mostly it's either on left side or right side of the head. What could be the reason of this.

CGO, BHMS (Silver Medalist)
Homeopath, Noida
Hi Monica, One-sided headaches are mostly due to Migraine or sinusitis. Migraine headache are accompanied by other symptom slike seeing halos around lights, decreased vision, sensitivity to light and vomiting. Sinus headache are accompanied by colds ,thick nasal discharge,a post nasal drip and heaviness in any part of face . Headaches occur due to one of these reasons: 1) Colds or sinusitis 2) Stress or lack of sleep 3) Migraine(One-sided headaches) 4) Hangover after taking alcohol 5) Fasting 6) Dental problem 7) Ear infections 8) Dehydration What to do if you have a headache: 1) Hydrate yourself by drinking 6-8 glass water 2) Sleep in a dark room. Wear comfortable cotton clothes and just relax. 3) Cold compress to forehead relieves headache by reducing inflammation and constricting blood vessels. 4) Practise muscle relaxation technique by doing deep breathing while lying down with your eyes gently closed. 5) If you have sinus headache, take steam inhalation to relieve your headache. 6) Avoid caffeine as initially it will relieve your headache, but slowly it will increase the headache. You may consult me for your headache through Lybrate.

Never had sex with anyone, but masturbating for 10-12 year (since class 6). Suffering from premature ejaculation (ejaculates in 2-6 stroke during masturbation). Am I really suffering from P.E.?What should I do?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Yes, you are but with masturbation. You are exciting yourself too much and it is likely that you may enjoy masturbation more than real sex with a partner. This much of indulgence in masturbation for 12 years could have made you dependent on it for pleasure and may cause extra response to stimulation. You should go for sex education and come to know a lot about heterosexual contact and how wonderful it is to really want to go for the real thing. There is nothing wrong with masturbation except for the addiction to it.

I am addicted to masturbation. I do it a lot sometime twice a day. I am practicing it from past 5 years. Will there be any problem in my sex life in future.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Twice a day isn't addiction, and also it will not affect your sex life in future. Masturbation is a very healthy form of sexual outlet, do not feel guilty about it. Nearly 99% of men and more than 60% of women masturbate. It starts from adolescence and goes on in some people even till death. The pleasure (orgasm) from masturbation is said to be unique from sexual intercourse. In men, most of the liquid contains only water and some fructose and hormones. Hence it does not drain your energy. Many equate masturbation/ seminal fluid loss to lack of energy, impotency and so on. Many quacks, religious heads and pseudo healers also propagate the idea that masturbation is a disorder/ and wrongful behavior and instill fear on the mind of innocent men and women (we can see posters in train and bus stand, offering help for this behavior). Consult a psychiatrist, if you have excessive masturbation guilt or compulsive masturbation. Compulsive masturbation is when a person continues with frequent masturbation neglecting his/ her other work like education, job or social obligations. In fact masturbation reduces the sexual tension and helps focus on task at hand better.

Dear lybrate-user, I can feel your concern. The best remedy for asthma management is to prevent exposure to the substance causing the allergy. Dust, animal hair, incense stick, smoking, strong smells, acute changes in weather and moisture in walls are some common causes of asthma attack. If you can pin point the cause then you can surely go for prevention but otherwise we prescribe the inhalation medicines and nasal sprays along with oral anti allergic medicines can surely help. Also take food in time and avoid very spicy and fried food as it may lead to acidity which in turn can mimic asthma.

Causes and Prevention of Diabetes

Diabetes features as one of the most common ailments in the contemporary times. Mostly assumed as a congenital disease, diabetes is growingly targeting different age groups and often the outburst of diabetes is mostly unmapped. Diabetes is mainly spurred by the presence of high blood sugar content in the patient's blood. In cases where insulin, the sugar absorbing hormone, is not produced normally, the patient becomes more prone to diabetes. Many attribute this phenomenon to the changing lifestyles of the people and their food choices. In clinical terms, however, diabetes is said to be triggered off by the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells in the body.

Besides the genetic susceptibility, there are a variety of causes that result in diabetes:

  1. Obesity and physical inactivity: An imbalance between calorie intake and the burning of the same often results in the storage of excess sugar. This aggravates the risks of cardiovascular diseases. The food and lifestyle choices are directly related to the phenomenon.
  2. Abnormal glucose production by the liver: Normally the pancreas secretes glucagon when the natural percentage of insulin is low and stimulates the liver to produce glucose which is then released into the bloodstream. But under certain conditions, the glucagon level is already high in some people. In such cases, the liver produces glucose thus increasing the risk of diabetes.
  3. Beta cell dysfunction: The beta cells are responsible for the secretion insulin in your body. In case the beta cells stop functioning normally, a medical condition called insulin resistance arises. Under this condition, your body cells stop responding to the insulins secreted and consequently, the glucose content increases thus causing diabetes. Various endocrine diseases contribute to the malfunctioning of the beta cells.
  4. Medicines and chemical toxins: Often certain medications like diuretics, anti-seizure drugs, psychiatric drugs, and drugs to treat HIV may lead to the worsening of the beta cell functions and cause diabetes.

Diabetes can be medically treated as well as its adverse effects can be assuaged by ushering in a few lifestyle changes:

  1. Periodically checking your blood sugar levels
  2. Taking adequate dental care often keeps the blood sugar levels in control
  3. Regularly exercising and being physically active
  4. Avoiding junk food and food with high glucose content
  5. Consuming relevant drugs prescribed by the doctors
  6. Being wary of the side-effects in cases of organ transplantations.
