Hi, I am female 31 year old and wanting to quit smoking is there any medication which help me stop and hate the smoke taste ? I have Been smoking for about 12 years.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Yes, there is medication to ease quitting smoking. Please consult a doctor for the same. To hate smoking here is a suggestion: keep cigarette butts in an ashtray with a little water and cover it. Whenever you feel like smoking just lift the cover and smell it. The stink is so repulsive that you will not feel like taking a cigarette for some time. When the impulse surfaces again, do the same. You have been smoking for a long time now but you can reverse almost all the damage from it by quitting now. Just keep at it till you succeed. Your willingness and desire to want to stop is a huge plus point in your favor for overcoming this malaise. Quitting smoking is very difficult but not impossible due to the following reasons: smoking has certain conditions for the urge to be stimulated. These can vary throughout the day. You need to de-condition around the habit. There is a physical and psychological craving that has to be countered. There are some medicines that ease the craving, for which you will need to consult a doctor. Some measures you can take are: avoid people, activities, and places where the need to smoke is highest. There is also the time of day when the urge is greater; occupy yourself with planned, alternative, and interesting activities. During all these times do deep breathing exercises. Buy some chewing gum or nicotine gum or nicotine patches to tide over the urge. Replace the conditions or associations with new behaviors to affect the drive. Frequent ?no smoking zones? when in need. Tell the whole world that you have given up smoking, and ask for support from all of them. Your oral need may increase so ?pacify? it by indulging in eating, drinking health beverages, sucking on hard candy etc. Persevere in very difficult moments by sticking to your resolution because the impulse will disappear pretty fast. Get the support of an addiction counselor to process the resolution.

Dear, schizophrenia is a severe mental illness that is primarily treated with medicines and other brain stimulation techniques. We will have to carefully review the treatment records and whether any brain stimulation methods have been used or not. Many times medicines are used for inadequate period of time or at inadequate doses. Sometimes medicine doses are missed. Finally we have to see if the diagnosis of schizophrenia is accurate or not. Based on all these information, advice can be suggested.

Ayurvedic Remedies For Mental Health!

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda, Bangalore
Ayurvedic Remedies For Mental Health!

According to an Ayurvedic study of mental health, ‘rajas’, ‘satwa’ and ‘tama’ are essential qualities of one’s mind. ‘Satwa’ is essential for knowledge and reasoning, ‘Rajas’ initiates thoughts, whereas ‘Tama’ renders a soothing effect and serves to control overactive ‘satwa’ and ‘rajas’. However, equilibrium among these three is necessary for a healthy mind. A disruption in this balance results in anxiety, anger and even mental disorder. Environmental toxins, stress and information overload take a toll on one’s brain functioning on a daily basis. Along with exercises and a balanced diet, these few herbs can be used for restoring mental balance, thereby promoting mental wellbeing.

  1. Mulungu Bark- Mulungu calms your nerves, thus improving your mood and sleep. It even enhances brain function, helping to reduce anxiety.

  2. Bacopa- Also known as Brahmi, bacopa boosts memory and cognitive abilities. It also aids in lowering the production of stress hormone ‘cortisol’. It sustains the physical health of the brain cells, protecting the brain against ageing.

  3. Rhodiola Rosea- This medicinal herb consists of two powerful compounds called ‘Salidroside’ and ‘Rosin’. Salidroside is a strong antioxidant while Rosin shields against neurotoxicity (toxicity in the nervous system due to the exposure to artificial or natural toxins) by curbing inflammation of the neural cells. This enhances a better mental performance, reducing anxiety, stress and fatigue.

  4. Ziziphus Jujuba- Day-to-day chores over a long period of time can get extremely tiring and affect your physical as well as mental faculties. Ziziphus Jujuba encourages good sleep at night, thus restoring your mental health.

  5. Passiflora Incarnata (passion flower)- This herb acts as a natural sedative; thereby relieving anxiety, which is a primary reason for interrupted sleep.

  6. Scutellaria lateriflora (skullcap)– The anti-oxidant properties of this plant help deal with and alleviate stress levels, in the process, improving your mood and inducing sound sleep. It also helps treat inflammation of the brain. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult an ayurveda.

Me bahut jyada smoking krta hu. Me ise chhodna chahta hu. Ye aadat nahi jati .please help me.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, Please try to stop smoking at the earliest. It has many health benefits in the long run. When you stop suddenly, you may get withdrawal symptoms like restlessness, irritability, lack of concentration, increased hunger, sleep disturbance, headache, impatience, anxiety, depression, etc. If you have them please don’t get back to smoking, take nicotine gum or lozenge or patch. They are available in all medical shops. You don’t need a prescription from doctors. Use 2 mg gum if you smoke less than 25 cigarettes/day. Use 4 mg gum if you smoke more than 25 cigarettes/day. First 6 weeks, use 1 gum every 1 – 2 hours. Reduce it in week 7 – 9 to one gum every 2 – 4 hours. In week 10 – 12, reduce it further to 1 gum every 4 -8 hours. By 3 months, you will be able to stop both cigarettes and gum fully without any withdrawal symptoms. Please feel confident that you can do it and give yourself some gift for doing it like vacation or books or new mobile. Smoking is a chronic relapsing condition like diabetes and B.P. So please don'€™t worry if you restart smoking. Start all over again to stop. You will learn the situations that make you smoke and avoid them. Please think of health benefits and money saved often. Plan how to avoid relapsing situations, like smoking friends, along with alcohol, stressful feeling or depression. Delay, drink, deep breathe, distract and discuss are the helpful tips. Increase of non smoking zones, gift yourself for stopping smoking. Even chewing cinnamon may delay. Please remember that the urge to smoke comes and goes like waves. Delay and see whether it goes away. It will like a passing cloud.

You will not solve your problem of OCD if you marry. In fact, you will trouble two peoples lives. You must combine therapy with medication to get good results. After you have resolved the OCD, you may consider marriage. Even though it is late, it is still adviseable to marry after resolving your problesm.

OCD is a long term many times life long disorder, so kindly continue as per her advise. Rather than disturbing her over calls, consult her in her clinic. If all patients start asking doubts and disturbing docs with calls unless it is an emergency, it will be tough on the doctor's part, understand this.

Does Brain Size Matters When It comes To Intelligence?

MCh Neurosurgery, MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Neurosurgeon, Guwahati
Does Brain Size Matters When It comes To Intelligence?

When it comes to the brain and the IQ, is bigger the better? Does size really matter? Is there really a connection between the size of your brain and intelligence? With the help of findings by neurologists
and scientists, we seek to find out!

  1. Ailments and the Brain: Scientists have found that children with autism have a brain that has grown in a disproportionate manner in the very first year of their life. This prevents the child from making connections with normal behaviour. On the other hand, children and adolescents who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD have shown signs of having a much smaller brain size. Many scientists have shown that the size of the brain shrinks as we age, and this does not have any visible effect on our cognitive abilities.
  2. It's all Relative: The size of the brain does not really have a bearing on the way a person's cognition gets shaped. Even large mammals like elephants and whales are finally hunted and tamed by humans who have smaller brains in comparison. The brain is made up of billions of neurons which need to function properly. It may be seen that scientists consider the brain mass in relation with the rest of the body so as to speculate about the cognitive abilities of the person. Why is this required? Large animals need a well functioning and proportionate brain size to control and run their organs with proper cognition for satisfactory results, which is what we humans seem to have done.
  3. Neanderthal Brains: Historically, the earliest man or the Neanderthals are said to have had larger brains than we do. These people are believed to have brains that are at least 10% larger than the brains that we have in our modern times. The shape of their brain was different too. They were also heavily muscled people which had a bearing on the size and shape of the brain and bodies as well as the lean tissue within the brain. They also survived very successfully for a period of over 200,000 years, which obviously points to some form of elevated cognition, as per many scientists.
  4. Animals: While animals with small brains like lizards and reptiles do not perform too well on IQ tests, the animals with bigger brains like elephants and dolphins perform much better. But the medium sized brains of monkeys, lemurs and other animals are said to perform in the best manner. The correlation between the body size and the brain does not seem to hold good here, as per various researches.

So the verdict as per medical science and research stands divided! If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Neurosurgeon.

I have taken multiple (4 to 5) online tests which shows I have moderate BPD. I feel I do please help.

M.PHIL - CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY, MA - CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
Psychologist, Delhi
I have taken multiple (4 to 5) online tests which shows I have moderate BPD. I feel I do please help.
Dear user, BPD is a personality disorder where a person is emotionally unstable and lacks any long lasting relationships. There feelings of emptiness, with frequent mood fluctuations, and lack of persistent goals in life. Person is impulsive with threatening behaviors often displayed towards others or self. There are feelings of guilt and depression. Suicidal or self-harm behaviors are also present. Many other behaviors may be present, chief problem lies with trusting others and believing in self/others. These behaviors need to be assessed by a trained professional for the presence of any disordered condition. As you can see, many of these behaviors are sometimes present in most of us at some point of time in our life, which may be due to different reasons. BPD is a clinical disorder and needs professional diagnosis to reach to any conclusion. Online tests may be there to help you identify those behaviors which may qualify to be part of BPD but one should not believe in online tests which don't have any credibility. You have not mentioned names of any such sites from where you have self-diagnosed yourself. Self-diagnosis is a dangerous attempt, in case of psychiatric disorders specially. This may put a wrong perception in you about your distressing mental condition and you may start feeling more helpless. Its better you visit a psychiatrist or a clinical psychologist for an appropriate diagnosis. There are psychiatric interviews which are specifically designed to diagnose personality disorders. You may get one and see which one you have, in fact you have to first check whether you have any BPD or other disorder or not. So try not to self-diagnose yourself and consult a specialist. There are good therapies that help BPD patients. BPD people respond best to psychotherapies, specially DBT.

I feel little bit depressed and unable to do reading work and keep on thinking all the day.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
I feel little bit depressed and unable to do reading work and keep on thinking all the day.
At your age this claim is serious. If you have depression then there are some major ramifications to take into account. I believe there may be some genetic predisposition or there has been some childhood issue, related to anger, that needs urgent attention. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved. As regards the concentration you are sure to have hormonal imbalances which may impact your memory because of the chemical but also the distractions that come with it; together with depression I can imagine your problems. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling.

Hi There, Dementia is a progressively deteriorating condition where there are memory problems along with the language, gait and also behavioral problems (sometimes psychosis as well.). All that we can do at this juncture, is stop the dementia from further worsening with the help of drugs and also control the behavior with the tablets. Surgery should be the last resort, though it is not usually recommended.
