I am going through a divorce. After 6 months of marriage my husband said he feels incompatible with me and blamed me for everything, despite me trying my level best. I know i shouldn't have tried, seeing that he didn't love me to begin with, but with divorce proceedings starting now, I've lost all confidence in myself, feel depressed and scared of my future. I'm a doctor myself and i immediately don't want to start on medications. Please help.

You did the right thing. Before proceeding to divorce, I do ask both partners to put in their best effort and make every attempt to sort out the differences, and only then to go ahead with the divorce, if it all does not fructify. The reason you need to do this is that you can walk out of the marriage knowing that you did your best and it did not work out for good reasons. You will be clear in your conscience and will have no regrets after the divorce. You will carry your conscience with you always, and an unclear conscience will torment you that you could have done this and that, to save the marriage. Do not feel regret that you tried everything. Now due to the stubbornness of your spouse, it will all end but you have a guilt-free situation. If this was an arranged marriage, perhaps there were irreconcilable differences, but if it was a love marriage, then I think he could have seen these problems earlier. In that case he has been unfair. But he does not deserve any second thoughts: it?s just good riddance to bad rubbish. As quickly as possible, get going with your life. Get rid of all reminders of him, keep talking about the pain to get it out of your system and go out and meet friends. Get into a health routine: exercise well, sleep well, eat well and socialize well. Do not spend time moping about him. Do not be in a hurry to settle down with someone until you have gotten him out of your system, nice and clear. You have done well, and deserve better. You do not need any medication for all this. It is just a temporary phase.

My father took decision to quit smoke. He had been smoking for thirty years . Presently he has not smoked for 6 days and he is feeling very anxious and irritated all the time. Please also recommend how to detoxify the lungs too.

My father took decision to quit smoke. He had been smoking for thirty years . Presently he has not smoked for 6 days ...
This is a very treasured moment in his life itself. You must encourage him and be with him engaging him as much as possible. He will feel anxiety and irritation for some time but do encourage him to talk about his feelings. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines the lungs with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. His oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing will be impinged. But don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. I don’t know what other organs could be damaged but take him for a thorough medical check-up to assess the effects of his abuse. Regarding improving his lungs, he needs to do a lot of aerobic exercise breathing through his nostrils only. Then there are a lot of deep breathing exercises in Yoga which he can learn too. Deep breathing cleanses his system and lungs and restores it to good health. Deep breathing uses the 80% of the lungs which are not normally used in normal breathing and even when exerting himself. The greatest effect is in the lungs because this substance is processed through the respiratory system directly through the lung surface. He should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time he feels like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. He may also take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine gums and nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. He may also join Smokers Anonymous in his city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep himself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all let him announce it to everyone that he has quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if he accidentally/willfully takes a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – he can start the cessation all over again. He must persevere with the best support until he defeats this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest. HIsd resolution is important and keeping him motivated is the task for the rest of the family. You must capture this opportunity and make it his best effort.

Dear user. I can understand. Depressive disorder or depression is a neuro chemical disorder. Suicidal tendency is one main symptom of depression. You must be able to distinguish between mental disease and mental disorder. Your problem is a mental disorder. Not a mental disease. These mental disorders are usually treated with a combination of medicines and other means like awareness, meditation, Psychotherapy techniques, life style changes etc. Take care.

10 Study Tips to Improve Your Learning Study Tip 1: Underlining Underlining is one of the simplest and best known study tips. It’s easy to highlight the most significant parts of what you’re reading. One key sentence per paragraph and a few important phrases here and there. You can only retain a certain amount so it’s best to retain the most important information. Study Tip 2: Make your own note and taking notes is one of the most widespread study skills out there. Essentially the aim of note-taking is to summarise lectures or articles in your own words so you can easily remember the ideas. Study Tip 3: Mind mapping A good Mind map can save you many hours of study and further consolidate your knowledge for your exams. Mind Maps are an extremely versatile tools. They can be used for brainstorming, outlining essays or study topics and for general exam preparation, ExamTime offers the ability to create Mind Maps quickly and easily which makes them the ideal tool when it comes to exams. Study Tip 4: Flash cards:- Using these are a particularly effective method of learning when trying to assimilate different facts, dates, formulas or vocabulary. Subjects such as History, Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Geography or any language are made much easier if you incorporate Flashcards in to your study. Study Tip 5: Case Studies Sometimes it can be difficult to grasp the implications of some theories. This is where studying case studies can be a big help. Case studies can help you visualise a theory and place it in a more familiar and realistic context. This is especially useful in business or law subjects. Study Tip 6: Quizzes are an excellent way to review study notes in the weeks and days before an exam. Quizzes can show where your strengths and weaknesses are, so it allows you to focus your efforts more precisely. Moreover, if you share your Study Quiz with your classmates and test each other as much as possible you can discover even more details and areas you may have overlooked. So before any exam, make sure you create and share a bunch of different Quizzes with your Friends. Study Tip 7: Brainstorming This is another study technique that is ideal for studying with friends and/or classmates. Brainstorming is a great way to expand every possible idea out of any topic. Just get a bunch of friends together and shoot the breeze, there are no wrong answers when brainstorming – just talk and capture the ideas, you can review afterward. Study Tip 8: Mnemonic Rules Mnemonics are especially useful when memorising lists and sets. Mnemonics rules basically work by associating certain concepts with other concepts that are more familiar to us. There are many different ways to make mnemonics and these can be individual to the person. Study Tip 9: ORGANISE your study One of the most effective study skills is also one of the most often overlooked; this is organising your study. Creating a TIME TABLE gives you goals and a time in which to achieve them. Having a study timetable as you study is greatly motivational Study Tip 10: Drawing Many people find it easier to recall images rather than text that is why they are better able to memorise concepts if they associate them with pictures or drawings. Dear Aafreen. Welcome to lybrate. I can understand. The only way for your father is to quit smoking and you have to motivate him. Motivate him to consult a psychologist and the psychologist will treat your father with deaddiction therapy. Take care,.

Hi lybrate-user, getting angry and irritable over trivial issues could be a sign of depression. If there's something in the family dynamics which upsetting you, communicate and discuss the issue. Don't hold and let your emotions pent up inside. They'll end up suffocating you. Meanwhile, establish a healthy and regular routine consisting of exercise, good sleep and diet. Also, spend time in doing things which you love doing. Good luck.

Hi lybrate-user ! I felt really bad, I could actually imagine how it would have hurted your son. Frankly speaking concentrate only on your son, but should also maintain at least a problem free life with your husband. Try to be silent, do not end up arguing. Try to not make the dispute big by answering your hubby all the time. Try to adjust for your little son sake. Try giving up. Try not to have too many expectation from your hubby. It happens at this age when kids are 1 to 4 years of age. Try to make your son little attached to his father also so that your hubby also will understand the importance of father how he should behave in front of your child, but handle this carefully. You need to adjust at least till your son turns 6 to 12 years of age. If in future you do something for your son try to hide and keep from your hubby. I feel I should explain more of how you have to behave with your hubby, bcoz kids are very important in life, bcoz most parents do not understand what impact will it do to their little ones though they love their kids, still when husband and wife starts an argument they go blind forgetting their child's presence, in front, how their little small heart gets hurted, so please come in for an online consultation so that I could help you overcome this problem completely, at one consultation itself if you feel free to contact me either through text chat or call me when you find difficulty to manage, if you feel this one suggestion will help you no problem. Take care of your little one, try to avoid argument which leads to fight between you and your hubby. With regards,

Yes, these things happen. At least 1%-3% of indian population has cross dressers/ transvestites/transsexuals. Our society is not open to such variations in gender and it's possible that you might be finding it difficult to be accepted as you are. You are also talking of an inner conflict which is very depressing for you. I would suggest that you see a psychiatrist / homeopath/ayurvedic doctor for treating depression and associated symptoms. Finding your own community and interacting with them will get you the much needed acceptance and belonging to a group. Expressing your feminine side in front of others who don't accept you might not be a safe choice yet but you could give in to your needs in private and personal space. Counselling helps immensely to vent out and take your frustration out of the system. You can also learn in conserving, to cope with your sexuality, enjoy it and resolve the personal conflict that you are going through.

Doctor Please tell me that how can i quit inhaling petrol fumes ? I am addicted to it.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Petrol contains a mixture of hydrocarbons (from crude oil) with a variety of substances added to improve its performance as a fuel. Breathing petrol vapor can cause headache, nausea, and dizziness. Extremely high levels can cause fainting and even death. There is no antidote for petrol poisoning, but its effects can be treated, and most exposed persons get well. Persons who have experienced serious symptoms may need to be hospitalized. Repeated exposure to very high levels of petrol can cause poor appetite, weakness, and even brain or kidney damage. Gasoline contains benzene and other additives that may cause future health problems after repeated, high-level exposures. Hydrocarbons in petrol depress the central nervous system and this can create a state similar to alcohol intoxication. Lead adds to the effect of intoxication. Even unleaded petrol can still contain small traces of lead. This can increase the ability of the substance to produce hallucinations. The petrol fumes enter the lungs, and from there into the bloodstream and on up to the brain. It can cause problems to mental and physical functioning. After immediate cessation you must work on building a new life, new coping skills, and better ways of dealing with stress. Without these changes you are likely to take on to some other substance abuse. You need to find healthy ways of enjoying yourself. This form of intoxication is a substitute for healthy and normal pleasures. Talk to a counselor to identify the pain deep down that you are trying to drown out. The hamartic drive (self-destructive by the addiction) is quite strong in you and needs to be addressed in therapy. You may wish to read my book on addictions. If you send me Rs. 250/-, I could mail you a copy.

I usually distract whenever I do the study. I can't concentrate on study. Why? Please give solution as much as possible.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Nagpur
Easy distraction is due to poor attention span and poor concentration levels. You can increase that by adopting simple techniques. Divide your study topic into small related parts, study in breaks, relax after 30-45 min of study, try to recollect that you have gone through every 30 min in short and then only begin another topic. Always correlate things that you have studied. Donot study unrelated topics on same day. If you still ding difficulty in maintaining concentration and attention start medicines with my advice.

Hi I am currently working in Noida, I have a problem of excessive sleepiness during day time, which is making me not to remain fresh and alert. It makes me difficult to read and remember. I am not getting good night sleep due to change in location as I am from South India. For past 5 years I worked in Chennai since 2 years I am suffering like this. I am divorced and have suffered a lot of incidents which are applying pressure. Kindly suggest.

Hi I am currently working in Noida, I have a problem of excessive sleepiness during day time, which is making me not ...
Your divorce may have a lot to do with your stress. Change of location does play a part but together with the divorce, they could cause a lot of sleeplessness. I suggest you deal with the stress and a lot of improvement is likely to happen forthwith. For improving your sleep try some or all of the following: Instead of worrying too much about causes, why don’t you implement some of my suggestions, because they work effectively. The lack of sleep, i. E. Sleep for less than 6 hours per night, is directly linked to about 86 diseases! So let us first focus on that. In your case particularly, do not sleep during the day; don’t even lie down. Go for regular exercise (breathing through your nostrils only) at a fixed time (at about 6 am) every day, whether you sleep or not. You must develop this habit of sleeping by 10 pm latest every night and wake up at a uniform time by 6 am every morning, even if you do not get sleep. If you do not get sleep, just lie down and if you have a bed lamp (or you could get one) lie down and read something light but not exciting. Your eyes will tire and you will fall asleep. If you like you may also put on light and soft music with the sleep function on. Depending on whether you are a visual or auditory person, you may watch TV in a lying down position until you feel sleepy. Have a warm bath before going to bed (for some people a cold bath at night seems to induce sleep! If you are one of them, please do so). Place the head side of your bed in a North-South position. The room must be as dark as possible and there should be no electronic items that give off even a light LED glow. There must be ample ventilation in the room. Avoid strong odors, except lavender, on your body or in the room, or on your sheets and clothes. There should not be any live plants in your bedroom. Sleep with the lightest of clothes or without any clothing. When lying down to sleep, lie down on your left ear as much as possible. Do not sleep directly under an overhead fan. You must eat a good breakfast, a fairly light lunch, and an early dinner, which should be a very light meal. Whatever you eat in the other meals, have only a pure carbohydrate meal at night with any vegetables, and preferably before 8 pm. Do not drink much liquids after or near about dinner time. When lying down to sleep you may use the 4-7-8 breathing pattern of sleep inducement i. E. Breathe in for four counts through your nostril only, hold for 7 counts, and exhale with a whoosh sound, through your mouth only, for 8 counts. Repeat this four times in the morning and just before you sleep at night. If you know Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT (check this out either on YouTube or Google), then please practice this too for sleep induction. Self-hypnosis and slow relaxation techniques, at night will be tremendously useful. Acupuncture or acupressure will both be very useful too. Pray last thing at night before you sleep.

I can understand the OCD symptoms being severe in intensity along with anxiety and depression. But whatever be the severity OCD symptoms can definitely be brought under control. What is the dose of fludac and sizodon. Admenta doesn't act on OCD symptoms. I am surprised why another OCD reducing ,medication has not been added. I think he needs revision of prescription, kindly take a 2nd opinion, from an experienced psychiatrist, he should be alright. Also, if possible combine CBT and Behavior modification technique from a a clinical psychologist, for better daily functioning. Wishes to your son for speedy remission.
