Deficiency of Iron in Children

PALS, MD, MBBS
Pediatrician, Delhi
Deficiency of Iron in Children

For the growth and development of children, they need an essential nutrient Iron. It helps in the transfer of oxygen from lungs to the body's tissues. Red blood cells contain iron in the hemoglobin. The hemoglobin carries oxygen in the blood to the different parts of the body. Iron has an important role to play in the development of brain and generating energy in a child's body. The lack of sufficient iron in the child's body can lead to anemia, which is a nutritional deficient illness and will require medical attention. When a child suffers from anemia, the lack of oxygen makes a child weak and sick.

There are certain symptoms of Iron deficiency in a child's body. These are:

  1. Infections and weak immune system can make a child suffer from frequent infections.
  2. Lethargy and fatigue is another common symptom of an iron deficient body. Due to deficiency of Iron it is difficult for the body to transport oxygen to cells in the body and hence it unable to generate enough energy levels.
  3. Breathlessness and increased sweating can be a sign that your child may be suffering from iron deficiency.
  4. Pica Children suffering from iron deficiency may find a special taste for non-food substances like chalk, dirt and clay.
  5. Lack of iron in the body hampers the physical growth of a child.

The deficiency of iron in children can be diagnosed through blood tests. Your doctor may recommend supplementing iron content orally or through multivitamin medicines. But the deficiency of Iron in a child's body should be taken care of with absolute urgency.

Proper steps should be taken to prevent the deficiency of Iron in children. Those notable precautions are mentioned below:

  1. Balanced diet: A well balanced diet is always recommended. For older children (within 9-12 years of age), red meat, chicken and fish would suffice as good sources of iron.
  2. Oral iron supplements: Oral iron supplements would be required for children with low weight at birth and who have a deficiency of iron in their daily diet.
  3. Vitamin C: Foods such as strawberries, tomatoes and potatoes help in providing the sufficient iron content when included in daily diets, thus reducing the chances of anemia.

It is best to give only breast milk till 4 months of age and do not give anything else like gutti. If you still give other milk, do not give in bottle and feed with a spoon.

Have a look at our sample meal plan for a one-year-old vegetarian toddler. It will help you feed your child a healthy and balanced diet to ensure that he gets all the vital nutrients he needs to grow well When planning your child's menu, remember that cholesterol and other fats are very important for his or her normal growth and development, so they should not be restricted during this period. If you keep your child's caloric intake at about 1,000 calories a day, you shouldn't have to worry about overfeeding and putting him or her at risk of gaining too much weight. See the following sample menu ideas for a one-year-old. Note: These menu ideas are intended for a one-year-old child who weighs approximately 21 pounds (9.5 kg). 1 teaspoon = 1/3 tablespoon (5 mL) 1 tablespoon = ½ ounce (15 mL) 1 cup = 8 ounces (240 mL) 1 oz = 30 mL Breakfast •½ cup iron- fortified breakfast cereal or 1 cooked egg •¼ –½ cup whole milk (with cereal or without) Fruit can be added to cereal or on its own •½ banana, sliced •2–3 large sliced strawberries Snack •1 slice toast or whole wheat muffin with 1–2 tablespoons cream cheese or peanut butter, or yogurt with cut-up fruit •½ cup whole milk Lunch •½ sandwich sliced turkey or chicken, tuna, egg salad, or peanut butter •½ cup cooked green vegetables •½ cup whole milk Snack •1–2 ounces cubed or string cheese, or 2–3 tablespoons fruit or berries •1 cup whole milk Dinner •2–3 ounces cooked meat, ground or diced •½ cup cooked yellow or orange vegetables •½ cup pasta, rice, or potato •½ cup whole milk Additional Information on HealthyChildren. Hello doctor, I have one month old baby. When I have taken him to pediatrician he told me that the sagittal suture is not yet closed to my kid which should be closed before birth. But when I searched in online I found, the sagittal suture does close at 29-35 years of age. Please clarify the same.

Hello doctor, I have one month old baby. When I have taken him to pediatrician he told me that the sagittal suture is...
The sagittal suture is one method used to date human remains. The suture begins to close at age twenty-nine, starting at where it intersects at the lambdoid suture and working forward. By age thirty-five, the suture is completely closed. This means that when inspecting a human skull, if the suture is still open, one can assume an age of less than twenty-nine. Conversely, if the suture is completely formed, one can assume an age of greater than thirty-five
