Dear Doctor, I have undergone Renal Transplant on 3rd. December (ABO Barrier). Could you advice me the diet instructions?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
The first few days after transplant depending on how well your new kidney is working you may need to continue to restrict certain foods for a short time. Your dietitian, or medical team, will let you know if this is necessary. It is important that you try to eat well during this period to help your wound heal. If you are finding it difficult to finish your meals inform the ward staff or the dietitian. What to do when you go home once your kidney is working well you will no longer need to be on a special diet but it is important that you still watch what you eat and have a healthy balanced diet. This is particularly important as your transplant medications can increase your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. These medications can also weaken your bones so you need to have a good intake of calcium and vitamin d. Continue a low salt diet almost all of us eat too much salt. About 80% of the salt we eat comes from processed foods, fast food, and can noteen and restaurant food. About 10- 15% is added at home and only 5% occurs naturally in food. To reduce your salt intake, you need to use less salt in cooking and at the table, eat more fresh foods and less processed and ready-made foods. Avoid using salt substitutes, for example: lo-salt and so low. Limit fat. Eat more fruit & vegtables fruit and vegetables are the perfect snack food. They are high in fibre, vitamins and minerals and low in fat. Aim to eat 4-5 potions of fruit and vegetables each day. Fresh, frozen, dried or tinned all count! include a wide variety of fruit and vegetables. A small glass of fruit juice (unsweetened) can count as 1 portion each day. Choose fruit tinned in natural juice instead of syrup. Dried fruit contains a lot of sugar and should be consumed in small quantities. Avoid adding salt, butter, oils or rich sauces to vegetables. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice is best avoided if you are taking: cyclosporin (neoral/sandimmum), prograf (tacrolimus) or cholesterol lowering drugs.

I have kidney stones and what is the best exercise to do so that no need for operation? Please advise.
Kidney stones are a very common health problem. They form from the chemicals in urine, such as uric acid, phosphorous, calcium and oxalic acid. Other common causes of kidney stones are excessive consumption of vitamin D, a mineral imbalance, dehydration, gout and an improper diet Irrespective of the size of the kidney stones, they can cause severe pain. Other symptoms include a desire to urinate frequently, painful urination, nausea, vomiting and excessive sweating. Pomegranate Both the seeds and juice of pomegranates have astringent properties that can help in the treatment of kidney stones. ? Try to eat one whole pomegranate or drink one glass of freshly squeezed pomegranate juice daily. You can mix pomegranate in a fruit salad also. Another option is to grind one tablespoon of pomegranate seeds into a fine paste. Eat this paste along with a cup of horse gram soup once daily. This remedy will help dissolve the stones. Being high in fiber, kidney beans can be effective in the treatment of any kind of kidney or bladder problem, including kidney stones. ? Remove the beans from inside the pods, then put the beans in hot water. Simmer the water on low flame for hours until the beans become soft and tender. Strain the liquid and allow it to cool. Strain the liquid again. Drink it several times throughout the day to relieve kidney stone pain. This liquid should not be kept for more than 24 hours, as it will lose its therapeutic properties. ? You can also eat kidney beans in soup or salad. To conclude, you can try any of these natural remedies for treating kidney stones Ayurvedic medicenes are neeri syrup and calcury syrup and vrikkdoshhar vati for more queries inform me?

3 Causes of Acute Kidney Failure

DNB (Nephrology), MD, MBBS
Nephrologist, Delhi
3 Causes of Acute Kidney Failure

You're said to suffer from the problem of acute kidney failure if your kidneys suddenly stop working and lose their ability to eliminate waste materials including excess fluids and salts from the blood. The condition usually develops quickly over a few days or even a few hours. When this happens, waste materials accumulate in your blood, disrupting the chemical balance of your bloodstream.

So, what causes this problem?

Acute kidney failure can occur because of any one of these reasons:

1. A drop or slowdown of blood flow to the kidneys - Adequate blood circulation to the kidneys is of great importance as without it the kidneys may end malfunctioning. If blood flow to the kidney is hampered, a part of or the entire kidney may die. You may suffer from acute kidney failure if blood flow to the kidneys gets impaired due to conditions like

  • Heavy blood loss
  • Sepsis (body's inflammatory reaction to an infection, which can bring about organ failure, tissue damage, and death)
  • Injury
  • Use of certain drugs
  • Dehydration
  • Burns
  • Heart disease

2. Urinary obstructions - A sudden blockage that hampers your kidney's ability to eliminate urine can also bring about acute kidney failure. When this happens, it leads to a build up of toxins in the body, causing an overload of the kidneys. Conditions that bring about this urinary obstruction include:

  • Cervical cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Bladder cancer
  • Kidney stones
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Prostate cancer

3. Disease within the kidneys - Even instances of clotting within the blood vessels of the kidneys can lead to acute kidney failure. This is because if the movement of blood cells within the blood vessels gets hampered, kidneys are not able to filter out toxins from the body. The conditions and diseases that may cause clotting, and subsequently damage to the kidneys include:

  • Scleroderma (an autoimmune disease that affects connective tissues and skin)
  • Build-up of cholesterol deposits
  • Glomerulonephritis (an inflammatory condition of the kidney's ball-shaped structures called glomeruli)
  • Hemolytic uremic syndrome (a condition that occurs due to untimely death of red blood cells)
  • Lupus (a disorder of the body's immune system that brings about damage to the body's own organs and tissues)

'Consult'.

Hi, whether you have early-stage kidney disease or you're on dialysis, you'll likely be advised to limit your phosphorus intake. Nearly every food contains some phosphorus. The best way to limit phosphorus in your diet is to limit foods highest in phosphorus, including fast food, convenience foods and processed foods, which may be full of phosphorus additives. Foods rich in phosphorus: milk, pudding, yogurt, soy milk, nondairy creamers and enriched rice milk, processed cheeses and cheese spreads, ice cream or frozen yogurt, soups made with higher phosphorus ingredients (milk, dried peas, beans, lentils), whole grains, including whole-grain breads, crackers, cereal, rice and pasta, quick breads, biscuits, cornbread, muffins, pancakes or waffles, dried peas (split, black-eyed), beans (black, garbanzo, lima, kidney, navy, pinto) or lentils, processed meats, such as bologna, ham and hot dogs, and meat, poultry or seafood, nuts and seeds, peanut butter and other nut butters, chocolate, including chocolate drinks, colas and pepper-type sodas, some flavored waters, bottled teas, some drink mixes. **********but as your uric acid is slightly high, you should also avoid high protein diet, so consult a nutritionist******
