8 Unexpected Reasons People Are Afraid of the Dentist

8 Unexpected Reasons People Are Afraid of the Dentist

For most people, a visit to the dentist is not a routine affair, it is mandated by tooth pain or bleeding gums. Surveys have been conducted to understand this, and at least 50% of the people have a fear of dentists.

Listed below are some common reasons cited by people as to why they fear a dentist:

1. General Anxiety: Unlike a regular doctor's set-up, the dental office with its various equipment and materials can be quite intimidating for anybody. This is one of the main reasons most people fear going to a dentist. Whether it is the big X-ray equipment or the drills used on the teeth, the person walking into the clinic has a general fear.

2. Fear of embarrassment and negligence: As mentioned, most people go to the dentist when a symptom sets in. Visiting a dentist and opening the mouth reveals the negligence of the person in terms of oral health, and this is an embarrassment for most people.

3.Tooth removal: A decade or so ago, for most decayed tooth, removal would be the only problem. In such cases, especially if the tooth was grossly decayed, it would be removed, sometimes with use of multiple instruments and in small pieces. The recent advancements have reduced the instances of tooth removal, however, this is a major reason for people to fear a dentist.

4. Injection: The thought of having an injection in the mouth is another big no-no for most people. There could also be the possibility of having a bad experience with an earlier dentist, where there might have been more than a prick to get the anesthetic effect.

5. Fear of pain: In this major set-up, most people are not sure which instrument might be used on them and they fear that this can cause additional pain to the tooth that is already in pain.

6. Fear of getting bad news: The dentist will diagnose the problem and reveal bad news about the problem. This might involve not just complicated treatment but also can be quite expensive.

7. Connecting to a bad experience: In some cases, the person could have had a previous bad experience and this might prevent them from going to any other dentist. The bad memory always comes to the fore and prevents the person from going through another bad experience.

8. The use of drill: Whether or not the person in the clinic requires drilling, the mere sound of it puts off some people from visiting a dentist. Opening the mouth and getting a tooth drilled is one of the biggest fears for most people.

Walk into a dentist with none of these fears and you will be relieved of your dental and oral problems.

If you wish to discuss about any specific dental problem, you can consult a specilized dentist and ask a free question.

Try Rinse

It is recommended to use a rinse with anti-plaque properties. It helps to reduce the amount of plaque mass in your mouth at any one time. Your best bet is a rinse that contains chlorhexidine. Since such products are only available by prescription, you should ask your dentist whether one would be right for you. Some over-the-counter rinses such as Listerine has been shown to be effective in preventing plaque buildup, but they don’t work as well as those with chlorhexidine.

Kindly get scaling done and use mouthwash twice daily for 15 days. Brush your teeth twice daily using correct brushing technique to maintain your oral hygiene. Also notice that you are not constipated most of the times as this is also one of the reasons for bad breath.

What should do for fast heel of tooth space. Any suggestions about for after tooth removed.
The extraction socket from where tooth is removed, will take its natural course of time to heal. To avoid delay in healing or infections, you should maintain good hygiene and do warm salt water rinses. Also, take the prescribed medication as advised.

Is it safe to grind and reduce tooth size. I have big squirrel front tooth and it's very uneven at the end.
It depends how much reduction required to correct your uneven teeth. Slight amount of enamel reduction does not create any problem but more amount of reduction is not beneficial. It create lot of problem.

Say after chewing chocolate, how long before glucose starts acting on the teeth? or a banana with fructose?

BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Well its a diffcult question to explain.. to be short -- its acts immediately.. but you need not worry abt it. beacuse the deminerliaztion caused by break down of sugars.. is compensated by re mineraliztion process.. the reason you suffer from dental decay is when your demineralization process dominates the re mineralization process.. to avoid this you must avoid eating a lot of sugar containing and sticky food stuffs. brush twicwe with a correct method and change your tooth brush every 2-3 months

Hello Mr. Lybrate-user treatment dental pain teeth pain may be due to various reasons like infection, sensitivity or trauma. If your teeth is decayed it is better to get it filled or treated by a dentist. If you are opting for root canal treatment do not forget to get a crown on the effected tooth. If you want to go for only medicinal treatment so let me tell you only medicine are not going to be very effective untill you get this treated by a dentist.

Geographic tongue Symptoms of geographic tongue Causes and risk factors Treatment or self-care for geographic tongue Geographic tongue is the name of a condition that gets its name from its map-like appearance on the upper surface and sides of the tongue. It may occur in other areas of your mouth, as well. You'll be relieved to know that geographic tongue is a harmless, benign condition that isn't linked to any infection or cancer. Two other names for geographic tongue are benign migratory glossitis and erythema migrans. Affecting about 1% to 3% of people, geographic tongue can show up at any age. However, it tends to affect middle-aged or older adults more often. It appears to be more common in women than in men. Symptoms of geographic tongue the telltale signs of geographic tongue are irregular, smooth, red patches on parts of the tongue. These patches may: have a white or light-colored border vary in size, shape, and color appear one area, and then move to another area come and go or change very quickly in days, weeks, or months last up to a year you may be unaware that you have geographic tongue until your dentist or other health care provider diagnoses it during an oral exam. About one in 10 people with geographic tongue may have mild discomfort or a burning or painful sensation. This is often from sensitivity to substances such as: hot, spicy, or acidic foods cigarette smoke toothpaste causes and risk factors geographic tongue occurs when parts of the tongue are missing layers of small bumps called papillae. They normally cover the entire upper layer of your tongue. Why do you lose these papillae with geographic tongue? nobody knows for sure. However, because geographic tongue tends to run in families, genetics may be a common link. Geographic tongue has also been seen more frequently in people with psoriasis and in those with fissured tongue. In fissured tongue, cracks and grooves appear on the tops and sides of the tongue. Treatment or self-care for geographic tongue seeing a dentist or doctor is the best way to rule out a more serious problem. In most cases, he or she can diagnose geographic tongue from a description of your symptoms and from examining your mouth and tongue. You may need tests to rule out other medical conditions. In most cases, any pain or discomfort will get better without treatment. But if you have severe, ongoing pain, medication can help. These are examples of what your doctor or dentist may prescribe: over-the-counter pain relievers anti-inflammatories mouth rinses with anesthetic corticosteroids applied directly on the tongue zinc supplements if you're wondering about steps you can take to hasten the relief of symptoms, try limiting these substances or avoid them altogether: tobacco hot, spicy, or acidic foods or dried, salty nuts toothpaste with additives, whitening agents, or heavy flavoring (toothpaste for sensitive teeth is a better choice)
