One cannot avoid city water if you are residing in the city itself. Best way is to boil water and look for any sedimentation below to trace the mineral content. Às far as kidney stones are Concerrned ,try to restrictrestrict protein Rich foods and oxalate rich foods like spinach, mushroom tomatoes.

Hi lybrate-user, a 11 mm stone will definitely need some medications in addition to dietary changes for dissolution. If there is hydronephrosis (swelling in kidney), do not delay endoscopic treatment. Otherwise, you can try some medications and dietary changes. Most important things to dissolve kidney stones are to keep your kidneys healthy and keep healthy urine flowing. How to keep the kidneys healthy? 1. Prevent or control hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and diabetes. 2. Exercise regularly; at least 30 min per day. 3. Take adequate natural vitamins and minerals in the form of fresh fruits and vegetables (except moderation in leafy vegetables, beans and tomato) 4. Reduce salt intake (<4 g /day). 5. Reduce animal protein (chicken, mutton, fish, milk etc) intake. How to keep your urine healthy? 1. Drink 3 to 4 litre of fluids/day to keep urine output > 2 to 2.5 litre/day. Make sure that your urine is not yellowish. 2. Increase good minerals like citrate, potassium and magnesium in urine. All these are abundant in fruits, especially citrus fruits like lemon and orange. 3. Decrease bad minerals like calcium, oxalate, uric acid and sodium in urine. 4. Do not reduce calcium intake too much. Calcium is required for bones, teeth, muscles etc. Moreover, too much reduction in calcium increases oxalate in urine leading to stones. 2 small glasses of milk per day is acceptable. 5. Non-vegetarian diet increases uric acid production. Reduce them. 6. Tea, coffee, tomato, greens, chocolate and beans are rich in oxalate. Moderation is required. With all these dietary modifications your kidneys may still be excreting large amounts of bad minerals and less of good minerals due to genetic predisposition. These can be checked in 24 hour urine tests. If so, you may need some special medications to prevent stones. However, if the size of stone is not decreasing after 3 months of medicines and food control, it is better to get it removed endoscopically, since it is a little larger to get dissolved easily.

Hi, Long standing diabetes effects the kidney. Creatinine level of 4 is very high and denotes kidney failure. It can not be treated with medicine alone & you might need dialysis in future. Be in regular follow up with your nephrologist for further evaluation & management. Thanks.

Dear sir, if both problems are present simultaneously, then it is important to evaluate properly before treating. For kidney stones, a 24 hour urine metabolic work up including calcium, uric acid, phosphorus, sodium, oxalate, citrate, magnesium and creatinine is done to rule out hypercalciuria. Then specific treatment for kidney stones can be started based on the results. Bone pain needs to be evaluated with dexa scan. Unless there is osteopenia or osteoporosis, there is no need to give calcium supplements. Finally even if calcium is required, it is preferable to give calcium citrate for stone patients. Most importantly, it should be give along with meals so that the calcium binds with oxalate in food and is excreted as calcium oxalate in stools. Hope I have answered your query, best regards,

Hi doctor, I have anal fissure. Kindly tell me what food should be taken and avoided. Need some home remedy to heal it.

MS - General Surgery

Fissure is usually caused due to constipation (hard stools). You hv to keep your stools soft. Must have high fiber diet, which includes green vegetables, and fruits like oranges, papaya, chikoo etc. Drink plenty of water. Sit in warm water for atleast 20 mins (seitz bath) twice a day.

Kidney stones treatment depends on the types and size of stone, most kidney stones won't require invasive treatment. You may be able to pass a small stone by: drinking water. Drinking as much as 2 to 3 quarts (1.9 to 2.8 liters) a day may help flush out your urinary system. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, drink enough fluid mostly water to produce clear or nearly clear urine. Pain relievers. Passing a small stone can cause some discomfort. To relieve mild pain, according to your medical history I may prescribe pain relievers such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen or naproxen sodium. Medical therapy. I am a doctor and renal (kidney) dietitian who will also prescribe a customized diet plan and medications to help pass your kidney stone quickly and with less pain. Do reply back for private consultation for a detailed treatment plan including dietary therapy.

General Physician,
I am 21 years old. While urination blood releases. It comes for 3-4 days a week. Please help me.
Blood in urine should not be neglected. Get a urine routine and microscopic examination done. Consult a nephrologist or urologist. It might be due to bladder pathology like cystitis, any lesion in bladder, for which cystoscopy might be needed later to confirm or it might be due to a kidney infection or lesion in kidney that can be confirmed by usg kub f/b biopsy if needed. Also if you had any recent history of throat infection mention it to your consultant.
