Different techniques for Anti-aging treatment

Hi I am Dr. Abhay Talathi, practicing skin care specialist and cosmetologist at skin space clinic, Goregaon Mumbai. Today I am going to enlighten you all on some anti ageing treatment. Looking young and attractive is always desired. Recent advances in medical technology have helped us with many procedures which can help you all to knock out the years from your face. Anti ageing treatment can be categorized into two categories -
1. In which we work on the surface of the skin so as to improve the dull, tired appearance of the skin and improve the tone and texture of the skin.
2. In which we are using certain procedures and injections to release the wrinkles of the face, improve the structure of your face and reduce the age related folds on the skin.

Let us see these categories one by one. So if you want to improve the surface of the skin we can utilize chemical peels, microdermabrasions, or we can use some laser devices. And when we want to improve the age related folds and structures of the face we can use Botulinum Protein injections, dermal fillers and radio frequency devices.

Chemical peeling is very simple, safe and very effective procedure performed in medical clinics. Fruit acids are used by the medical practitioners to bring out better looking skin, reduce the dullness, improve the fine lines and also to reduce the pigmentation. Usually this procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes, and 4 to 6 sessions are required probably within 2 to 3 months of the treatment span. With every treatment you get results but if you complete the sessions results are more recorded.

Microdermabrasion is a machine based exfoliation treatment in which dull and dead skin is exfoliated with the help of aluminum oxide crystals. So with the help of these crystals the skin is sanded against the vacuum through the machine, it results in smoothening of the skin and also resurfacing. This procedure can be performed on all skin types for instant glow.

Let's talk about lasers now. Lasers are energy based systems which are used to stimulate collagen which will result in the reduction of fine line and also in tightening of your skin. Usually 4 to 6 sessions of lasers are required which are employed in a gap of 2 to 3 weeks in between the two sessions. Laser procedures are completely painless. A treatment would last for about 15 to 20 minutes. Usually 4 to 6 sessions of laser treatment are required with a gap of 2 to 3 weeks in between the treatment so as to produce long lasting results.

Coming to the treatments which are going to improve the wrinkles and the folds of ageing.
Botulinum Protein injections are probably the most famous anti ageing treatment in the world. These are simple injections which are strategically placed in the muscles of the face so as to relax them temporarily resulting in the reduction of the wrinkles, particularly the wrinkles on the forehead, area, around the eyes are effectively treated . It’s a simple lunchtime procedure which can be performed within 15/20 minutes. Result will be seen within 2 to 14 days.

Yet another fascinating treatment in anti ageing segment is the use of dermal fillers. Dermal fillers are ready syringes containing hyaluronic gel which is a natural sugar molecule present in everyone's body and skin but is reduced because of the ageing process. The syringes are injected into the various areas of the face so as to reduce the age related folds around the nose, around the mouth, to volumize certain areas like cheeks, reshape the chin and the nose as well. The best part of dermal fillers is they produce instantaneous result immediately after injecting and are very comfortable in most of the individuals.

In case, some of the clients are not willing to take injections and for them we can use radiofrequency tightening devices to reduce the folds and also to tighten the skin. The radio frequency device utilized at skin space. It is US FDA approved technology. The procedure just feels like a warm massage over the face and the neck area and does not cause any pain. Usually a session takes about 30 to 45 minutes and 4 to 6 sessions are performed at varying intervals based on your skin quality and the ageing process affecting your face. With ease of availability of all these procedures it is possible for everyone to look young and attractive.

If you want to know more about anti-ageing procedures you can contact me through Lybrate.com or visit me personally at skin space clinic. Thank You.

A Peek Into Skincare Regimen of Women With Great Skin

Skin problem is one of the most persistent problems encountered by people. It is imperative, therefore, that you take care of your skin to avoid skin disorders and women's are best in taking care of their skin.

Here are some fail proof techniques that women with great skin follow:

  1. They use a good night cream: Night time is when your skin gets to relax and rejuvenate. Help this process by adding a good night cream to your daily ritual. A retinoid cream, for example, is a vitamin a derivative rich in collagen which helps in skin repair. They can also help reduce the occurrence of fine lines and pimples.
  2. They work on their blemishes: Some have puffy eyes, others have dark circles or sun spots and may be even a couple of wrinkles here and there. But all these flaws can be steadily worked upon on a daily basis to reduce the skin problems and prevent appearance of new ones.
  3. They cleanse it right: Cleansing the skin is almost done like a ritual. It has its set of rules which differ from skin to skin. As a base rule, women with good complexion do it at least twice a day - once in the morning and once before bed. It helps clear the oil, dirt, impurities and make up that clogs the pores and lets the skin breath. Use lukewarm water and a creamy cleanser. Let the cleanser sit on your skin for a minute while you gently rub it in before you wash off. This is one step women with good skin simply don't miss.
  4. They follow the antioxidant mantra: Foods rich in omega 3 and antioxidant-rich foods like blueberries, green leafy veggies, and green tea help reduce the effects of aging to add a youthful glow to the skin. Here are some of the most common anti-aging treatments

Find Out the Real Facts About Sunscreen

MBBS, MD - Dermatology, DNB
Dermatologist, Mumbai
Find Out the Real Facts About Sunscreen

No sunscreen provides absolute protection from the harmful rays of the sun but using the right product in the right way will take you far in shielding yourself from their harshness.

Read on to find the real facts about sunscreen:

  1. Putting sunscreen on your skin once is enough to protect you throughout the day: Most people apply sunscreen only once before heading out of the house, and don't reapply it again throughout the entire day. Contrary to popular belief, this does not provide protection for the entire day as most sunscreens lose their effect with time. To ensure that your skin remains protected you need to reapply sunscreen once every 2 hours, and once every 40-80 minutes if you are engaging in activities like swimming and exercising.
  2. You do not need to apply sunscreen in winters or you are when indoors: Winter skin is relatively more sensitive than summer skin which is tanned. If one is in hilly areas or snow covered regions there is reflection of UV light from the snow that causes more skin damage. Also glass can allow UV rays to pass through and indoor lighting can also be a source of UV exposure, therefore you should apply sunscreen even when you are indoors.
  3. Waterproof sunscreens won't wash off: Even if your sunscreen is waterproof, you need to reapply it at regular intervals if you are pursuing water sports like swimming or are the kind who washes their face frequently. When a sunscreen is typified as waterproof, it actually means that the composition of the sunscreen makes it suitable for functioning for a maximum of 1 hour and 20 minutes under water. Moreover, sunscreens containing a 'water-resistant' label can bear water immersion up to at most 40 minutes.

So, irrespective of whatever the label of the sunscreen mentions, you need to reapply sunscreen every hour to protect your skin effectively.

Saying Goodbye to Acne Caused Due to Dandruff

Saying Goodbye to Acne Caused Due to Dandruff

Dandruff is a major cause for hairfall and hair weakening. It is estimated to affect as many as one in five individuals in india. Acne is a skin condition that happens when pores get clogged with dead skin cells and oil, giving rise to pimples. It can be caused by numerous reasons like hormonal changes, dandruff, improper diet, stress, consumption of specific drugs, excessive use of cosmetic products etc.

Dandruff has been associated with presence of yeast or fungi, it is also associated with abnormal skin ultrastructure. Dandruff makes the skin on your scalp flaky. These dry flakes of skin are often responsible for clogging the pores on your face, mostly affecting your forehead. In this way, dandruff triggers appearance of acne and can worsen the condition of your skin if you already have pimples.

Eradicating dandruff from your scalp is the best way to prevent acne breakouts on your skin due to dandruff.

Here are some simple ways to keep acne due to dandruff away from your skin:

  1. Brush your hair at least twice a day: Brushing your hair at least two times a day will ensure that the dead cells on your scalp are removed and don't get a chance to clog pores. This option is highly beneficial in getting rid of acne caused by dandruff.
  2. Use medicated anti-dandruff shampoo: Topical medicated solutions like a medicated shampoo should be used as a treatment. Short contact period of shampoo with scalp is important for more benefit. Good conditioner should also be used after head wash with shampoo.
  3. Ensure that your hair stays off your face: Keeping hair off your face will ensure that dandruff doesn't come in contact with your skin and clog pores, preventing pimples. For this, you can use hair bands or tie your hair in a ponytail or braid.

Prevention for Acne

MBBS, MD - Dermatology, DNB
Dermatologist, Mumbai
Prevention for Acne

Acne is not a harmful or a dangerous condition, but is usually a cosmetic problem and may also sometimes be a symptom of underlying conditions.

So what kind of skin care regimen can you have in order to prevent acne? Read on to know more:

  1. Makeup: If your skin is acne prone, you can use non oily makeup or avoid it on a daily basis, if you can. Non oily makeup does not irritate the sebaceous glands, which can end up secreting excessive oil leading to acne breakouts. Non oily makeup and skincare products are known as non-comedogenic, which do not clog the pores. Also, you must remember to remove your applied makeup carefully before you go to bed, so that the pores are clean and get a chance to breathe rather than getting infected. Further, your old makeup needs to be thrown out regularly even if the products do not come with an expiry date. Invest in new makeup every few months and clean your brushes regularly too.
  2. Cleaning Acne Prone Areas: You must wash the acne prone areas with soap and warm water at least twice a day. If your case has been very severe in the past, you can even use a medicated soap to wash the neck, shoulders and back as sometimes, acne spreads to these areas as well. Concentrate on the face and remember to clean it to remove dust, grime and other irritants that come from pollution. If this is not done on a regular basis, the particles can block the pores and lead to infection where the dead skin cells play a major role.
  3. Sweat: After a particularly intense workout session or after a run, you must remember to wash you face and take a shower so that the sweat and oil is can be removed, as these lead to breakouts if they are allowed to gather on the skin's surface and enter the pores. Taking care of your skin with a proper cleaning and hydrating routine is as important is getting the right nutrition as well.

Why are SKIN TAGs so annoying?

MBBS, MD - Dermatology, DNB

Why are SKIN TAGs so annoying?

Skin tags: causes and treatments

Skin tags, also known as acrochordons, are small brown or darker-than-skin tone growths on the surface of the skin. Tags are very common and harmless growths and tend to occur on the neck, under the breasts, armpits, eyelids and folds of the groin. They generally take place after midlife. About 25% of people report having skin tags after they cross the age of 50.

What causes skin tags to occur?

Skin tags are very common among diabetics and obese individuals. Pregnant women also develop skin tags, as a consequence of changes in the body's hormonal levels. Skin tags tend to occur when your skin rubs against clothing or skin. They are normally caused by blood vessels and collagen that gets trapped inside the thicker portions of the skin. For this reason, they are typically found in folds and creases of the skin. Sometimes, they reduce on their own if blood supply to the tissue has been disrupted due to them getting twisted.

What procedures are involved in their treatment?

Skin tags are generally removed for purely cosmetic reasons but when they do become troublesome, as in, they rub against jewelry, skin or clothing, doctors recommend their removal as the area can end up becoming irritated.

The following procedures are performed to remove these annoying growths on skin:

1. Excision - in this procedure the skin tag gets removed using a scalpel.

2. Ligation - the procedure involves the cutting off of blood supply to the skin tag.

3. Cauterization - the procedure involves the burning off the skin tag using electrolysis (process that involves decomposition of a matter by electric current)

4. Cryosurgery - in this procedure, the skin tag is frozen before removing it. An instrument containing liquid nitrogen is used to do the removal.

What Really Causes SKIN Discoloration?

MBBS, MD - Dermatology, DNB

What Really Causes SKIN Discoloration?

Causes of skin discoloration and its types

Skin discoloration is a condition where the overall color of skin appears patchy and uneven. This generally takes the form of dark spots, blotchiness, jagged sunburns, etc. It is caused due to unequal distribution of melanin, the pigment responsible for imparting color to the skin.

Melanin is produced by the melanocyte cells in the epidermis layer of the skin. This pigment plays a protective role in the skin, particularly when it comes to defense against sun damage. Production of melanin is generally uniform through the skin but sometimes, various anomalies cause some parts of the skin to produce excess melanin whereas others may produce none at all. This leads to discoloration of the skin, making the appearance of skin tone irregular and non-uniform.

What are the different types of skin discoloration?

There are various types of skin discoloration which are caused by different medical and nonmedical conditions.

Some of them are as follows:

  • Melasma. This type of skin discoloration occurs due to fluctuations in the levels of estrogen and progesterone in the body. This condition is found most commonly in pregnant women.
  • Vitiligo. This is a medical condition which is caused when melanocyte cells cease to function or die. It manifests itself in the form of white patches that appear on the skin.
  • Sunburns and Tans. These appear on the skin in the form of dark patches, uneven splotches and burns. It is caused by unprotected and prolonged exposure to the sun.
  • Tinea Versicolor. This type of skin discoloration is caused by a fungal infection that makes skin appear dull and flaky in patches. It occurs due to hormone level fluctuations or a malfunction in the immune system.
  • Skin Cancer. When the skin gets affected by melanomas and carcinomas, it appears discolored. This type of discoloration changes shape, size and texture and requires the immediate attention of a specialist.
  • Other causes of skin discoloration include genetic inheritance, allergic reactions and drug reactions. The diagnosis of treatment depends on the exact nature of the condition and varies from case to case.
