Hey. It's very likely that you are having a very heavy meal or a meal after a long gap or a very oily spicy meal which is causing acidity. It's also possible you are getting distension due to poor eating habits, stress and lack of sleep. Try to manage a healthy diet and eat at the right times and sleep well.

India uses a number of graphical elements to represent the messages of its guidelines, one of them being a food pyramid. The pyramid is divided into four levels of foods according to recommended consumption: cereals and legumes/beans at the base should be eaten in sufficient quantity, vegetables and fruits on the second level should be eaten liberally, animal source foods and oils on the third level are to be eaten moderately, and at the apex, highly processed foods high in sugar and fat to be eaten sparingly. Accompanying the pyramid there is a recommendation to do regular physical activity and warnings against smoking and drinking alcohol. Messages Eat a variety of foods to ensure a balanced diet. Ensure provision of extra food and health care to pregnant and lactating women. Promote exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and encourage breastfeeding until 2 years or as long as possible. Feed home-based semi-solid foods to the infant after 6 months. Ensure adequate and appropriate diets for children and adolescents, both in health and sickness. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits. Ensure moderate use of edible oils and animal foods and use a minimum of ghee/butter/vanaspati. Avoid overeating to prevent overweight and obesity. Exercise regularly and be physically active to maintain ideal body weight. Restrict salt intake to a minimum. Ensure the use of safe and clean foods. Adopt the right pre-cooking processes and appropriate cooking methods. Drink plenty of water and take beverages in moderation. Minimize the use of processed foods rich in salt, sugar and fats. Include micronutrient-rich foods in the diets of elderly people to enable them to be fit and active.

1. Start exercising. Start working out if you are not active. Begin with body weight exercises like push up, pull up and squats. Weight training proves to be really helpful if you want to gain good quality weight. Train each body part twice a week. For example: Monday/Thursday: Chest + Triceps Tuesday/Friday: Back + Biceps Wednesday/Saturday: Legs + Shoulders Don't forget to warm up for at least 10 - 15 minutes. Warm up includes jumping, rope skipping, treadmill, cycling, stair climbing, etc. 2. Eat Healthy. Stop drinking and smoking too much if you are indulged in it. Limit your intake of junk food and any form of sugar. Do not at all starve yourself. Make it a habit to eat something healthy every 2 - 3 hours. Some of the recommended food items are boiled chicken and eggs, brown rice, brown bread, peanut butter, olive oil (extra virgin), green tea, dry fruits etc. 3. Consume good amount of fruits and vegetables. Bananas, apples, pomegranate, green leafy vegetables. Fruits and vegetables helps in absorption of food in the body and together, completes your daily nutrition need. 4. Eat whole grains. Try to have multi grains spread throughout the day. Wheat, brown rice, oats are best sources of healthy carbohydrates but do not include these items in your dinner. 5. Increase protein intake. Protein proves to be the most essential nutrient when it comes down to gaining strength or building muscle. Therefore, consume all types of protein from both veg and non veg food items. Boiled chicken and eggs are the best sources of fat free protein. Sprouts are also rich in protein. Your Daily food intake should ideally consist of – a. Have plenty of nuts, dry fuits and seeds. Almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, figs, dates and raisins. They are full of healthy fats needed by a human body. B. Good amount of fruits and vegetables – Bananas, apples, pomegranate, green leafy vegetables. Fruits and vegetables helps in absorption of food in the body and together, completes your daily nutrition need. C. If you are a non- vegetarian - Eat eggs, chicken etc. D. Eat whole grains – Try to have multi grains spread throughout the day. Wheat, brown rice, oats, bajra, daliya etc should be taken in multiple meals in a day. E. Eat Sprouts – Chana and moong which are full of protein and nutrients. F. You can supplement your diet with good quality multi-vitamin capsules. If you are lacking in protein, you can buy a high quality whey protein and have it with banana shake twice a day. G. You can take natural food items like wheat grass which is full of essential nutrients which helps in weight gain.

Advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

Hye, thanks for the query. Being underweight can be a concern if it's the result of poor nutrition. Here are some healthy ways to gain weight when you're underweight: eat more frequently. When you're underweight, you may feel full faster. Eat five to six smaller meals during the day rather than two or three large meals. Choose nutrient-rich foods. As part of an overall healthy diet, choose whole-grain breads, rice and cereals; fruits and vegetables; dairy products; lean protein sources; and nuts. Don't fill up on diet soda, coffee and other drinks with few calories and little nutritional value. Instead, drink smoothies or healthy shakes. Snack on nuts, dried fruits and fresh fruits. Even when you're underweight, be mindful of excess sugar and fat. An occasional slice of cake or ice cream is fine. But most sweets should be healthy and provide nutrients in addition to calories. Sheera, lassi and chikki are good choices. Exercise, especially strength training, can help you gain weight by building up your muscles. Exercise may also stimulate your appetite.

I am an 18 year old college going girl. I have been practicing dieting for the past 5-6 months though not currently but not eating as freely as a teenager of this age do. I have become really diet conscious and has started counting calories in each food article I eat and measure the weights of each and every stuff to keep the calorie intake under control because I am afraid of gaining back the same weight. Though due to unhealthy weight loss method that I opted by skipping meals and even had a phase of calorie intake as low as 1200 calories each day I have caused a lot of harm to my body. I am suffering from certain consequences of unhealthy dieting like irregular menstruation, irritable behaviour, and mental stress by constantly thinking when and what to eat next that may have limited calories and is not fattening and planning out excuses for refusals to those who offer me something unhealthy or extra. My parents and me both feel I am psychologically unwell and has lost control over my behaviour and anger and all of us are stressed about this. I now want to have a balanced diet which would not led to obesity and help me in weight management because my weight loss regime has lead to severe fall in my weight which is now just 35 kgs and my height is 5'2".I want my behaviour to be the same as it used to be - jolly, polite and loving. What should I do because now I have become addict of counting calories and measuring weights of each food I eat and has completely cut back the junk food and find it difficult to attend social gatherings. Please help asap because I want to recover from this addiction and be carefree and manage a normal weight at the same time and keep my mind on track so that I can focus better on my studies and lead a successful life.

Dear Lybrate user, It is really strong of you to seek help despite going throught these overwhelming difficulties. The symptoms that you describe appear to be of some eating disorder which needs to be effectively assessed and treated. Please visit a psychiatrist so that treatment might start as early as possible. Longer duration of untreated illness makes the prognosis less favourable.

Your pain is only related to your muscles like quadriceps, hamstring, calf etc. Main muscle is vmo. You should do flexibility and strengthening exercises. Thr r many exercises starts with isometric to isotonic, resistance or thrraband exercises, etc its not easy to explain all exercises in writing so please visit nearer physiotherapist doctor. You need to do some ergonomic changes in sitting, (don't sit on floor, stair climbing (go up with good leg first and than painful one and while coming down (descending) vice versa. Take some support while getting up from the seated position. Use western toilet, use foot rest while working in office or computer work. Don't work in single position for long time (more than half an hour)
