Can Genetics be the Reason Behind Schizophrenia?

Can Genetics be the Reason Behind Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder in which a person’s mood, knowledge, thought and several other characteristics gets disturbed. We can notice most of the adults and old people with few symptoms of schizophrenia, which are most commonly left unidentified. The exact cause of schizophrenia is not yet known. The person feels that they are being constantly watched, they feel the presence of someone or something, which is not actually there. They are always suspicious and think that other people are gossiping and thinking about them.

Possible causes of Schizophrenia
Though the exact cause of schizophrenia is not known there are few factors, which contribute to the cause of schizophrenia.

  1. Genetic factors: People with a family history of schizophrenia are at higher risk of getting schizophrenia.
  2. Environmental factors: Environmental factors include excessive stress during pregnancy or later stages of life. Several other factors during pregnancy and childhood are responsible for causing schizophrenia. These factors are:
    1. Decreased oxygen level during delivery due to premature birth or prolonged labour
    2. Parental loss or separation in early stages of life
    3. Parental exposure to virus or during infancy
    4. Childhood physical or sexual abuse
    5. Abnormal brain structures and brain chemistry

Sings and symptoms of schizophrenia

  1. Hallucination: To see, feel or hear anything that really does not exist is known as hallucination.
  2. Delusion: A thought or belief of a person, which is either false or impossible in reality is known as delusion.
  3. Thought and speech disturbances: The thought process and speech of a schizophrenic will be disorganized, due to which he or she  will fumble or is distracted as they are unable to align their thoughts.
  4. Difficulty in concentrating: It is difficult for people suffering from schizophrenia to concentrate on the task at hand.
  5. Erratic behaviour: People suffering from schizophrenia tend to behave erratically, either they will be too jumpy or will be perfectly still for hours at a stretch. Most people belief that those who are suffering from schizophrenia are often violent in nature, which actually is not the case.

Treatment for schizophrenia
Schizophrenia can be treated, if identified at an early stage. It is best advised to consult a psychiatrist the moment you spot the symptoms. Anti psychotic drugs, self help behaviour change, counselling and rehabilitation are few treatment modalities available for schizophrenia.

There are many side effects of Psychiatric medicines. Some medicines itself cause Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar Syndrome, Loss of confidence, reChecking syndrome, Constipation, Glaucoma, Weight Gain etc. These symptoms are seen only after taking medicines. And the Psychiatrist says not to worry and continue treatment. Confused. What to do?

Hi, You have Anxiety neurosis. Disease Comes From Yourself And You Don’t Realize It. We are the only species on the face of the Earth capable of transforming our biology through our thoughts and feelings. Our cells are constantly watching our thoughts and are being modified by them. A bout of depression can devastate our immune system; a state of serenity, in contrast, can fortify it tremendously. Joyful and harmonious activity can keep us healthy and prolong our life. The memories of a negative or sad situation release the same hormones and biological destructive substances that stress does. Our cells are constantly processing all our experiences and metabolizing them according to our personal points of view. As a result, our bodies are transformed as soon as we internalize our interpretations. A depressed person, for example, will project sadness throughout his or her entire body. When depression occurs, the production of neurotransmitters from the brain are altered, hormone levels will vary, the sleep cycle is interrupted, the neuropeptide receptors on the outer surface of the skin cells are modified, blood platelets become more viscous and more likely to form lumps and even the tears will contain different chemical trails as those of joy. This entire biochemical profile will change drastically once the person becomes calm and serene. These facts confirm the great need to use our consciousness to create the bodies that we really need. The same way the aging process can be neutralized every day. Shakespeare was not being metaphorical when through his character Prosperous said: “We are made of the same stuff as dreams”. Do you want to know how is your body doing today? Then remember what your thoughts and emotions were yesterday. Do you want to know how your body will be tomorrow? Observe your thoughts and emotions today! Remember that when you open up your heart and your mind you will be avoiding a surgeon doing it for you. The remedy is within you and you are not using it. Disease comes from yourself and you don’t realize it.

Internet Addiction - 6 Signs Your Child Is Suffering From It!

Internet addiction is a very recent phenomenon, but is already a cause for concern. With the advent of various social networking websites, people are increasingly becoming addicted to the internet. Internet addiction disorder is often characterized by people inching to form an emotional attachment with people and activities, all of them online. You may enjoy connecting to people more over the virtual interface instead of the real world; this usually stems from an inability to establish real human contact.

The symptoms of internet addiction disorder are:

  1. Excessive usage of the internet
  2. Depression, mood swings and irritability if one doesn’t get access to the internet
  3. Any effort to reduce internet usage is usually unsuccessful
  4. You may experience constant problems in personal relationships, education and your job due to incessant internet usage
  5. A tendency of lying to close ones when they ask you how much time you spend over the internet
  6. Using internet to escape from real world problems

Further complications
Internet addiction can gradually isolate you. You may develop an aversion to meeting and communicating with people in real life. This can impair your social skills and make you socially awkward. This disorder also create problems in relationships as it can reduce the time you spend interacting personally.

Internet addiction may also lead you to create online personas to evade low self-esteem issues. This actually aggravates the problem instead of solving it; can result in severe anxiety and depression. Withdrawal symptoms might result in anxiety, depression, irritation and loneliness. This disorder can lead to complications such as dry eyes, headaches, change in sleep patterns and subsequent problems in falling asleep. Back pain from sitting upright while you are on the internet is also very common problem.

Stress - How It Can Affect Your Digestive System?

Stress - How It Can Affect Your Digestive System?

I am so stressed”, how many times do we say or hear the people around us say so. In this the 21st century, it has almost become a normal thing to be stressed. Physiologically stress can be defined as the mental or emotional anxiety that is caused by circumstances that are demanding which can be work, relationships or day to day activities. The more stressed a person is, the more it affects their lives both physically and emotionally. These effects can range from high blood pressure to reduced functioning of the immune system and problems in the gastro intestine. In this article we are going to focus on how stress affects gastroenterology.

What is gastroenterology?
Gastroenterology can be described as the branch of medicine which focuses on the digestive system and its disorders. Two of common digestive disorders or diseases are gastrointestinal cancer and gastrointestinal bleeding. They are usually diagnosed through tests such as a stool test or endoscopy, just to mention a few, and treated by specialists referred to as gastroenterologists

Gastrointestinal diseases caused by stress are:

  1. Constipation
  2. Irritable Bowel syndrome
  3. Structural disorders i.e. cancer and diverticular disease
  4. Anal disorders i.e. hemorrhoids, fistula and anal fissures
  5. Colon polyps

These are some of the common problems one experiences when in constant stress. With constipation and bowel irritation everything seems to be normal but the digestive system does not function properly. The more stressed a person is, the more severeis the dysfunction. One common symptom with digestive disorders is pain. The diseases may start out mild and become chronic over time. It can simply begin with a simple alteration of your normal bowel movements.

How stress affects gastroenterology
According to Kenneth Koth an MD, Professor of medicine “stress can affect every part of the digestive system”. The question is, how? The enteric nervous system which is composed of hundreds of nerves, used to communicate with the central nervous system, is what controls the digestive system. When one is stressed they are in a flight mode, which is communicated to your central nervous system which may shut down the flow of blood and consequentially affects your digestive system leading to disorders as well as triggering other diseases such as ulcers.

Keeping stress under control
By reducing stress one is able to control the negative effects it has on gastroenterology. Stress is easily relieved by lifestyle changes involving proper diet and exercise. Exercise and relaxation reduce tension and stimulate the brain to release endorphins which are chemicals that help in reducing stress and boosts or enhances one’s mood.

Stress is mostly unavoidable and each person has to make a personal choice not to be constantly stressed in order to avoid digestive disorders and lead a health life. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

4 Ways To Deal With Kleptomania!

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

4 Ways To Deal With Kleptomania!

Kleptomania is a form of psychiatric disorder. It is a difficult disorder, and an affected person experiences a lot of shame, remorse, stress or feels guilt, which are associated with stealing. It is categorized as an impulse control disorder which affects the behavior of a patient. Kleptomania may be associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder. The patient develops an impulse to steal and cannot control this impulse and later feels guilty.

Here are several tips which you can use in order to deal with kleptomania.

  1. Understanding the situation: It must be clearly understood that a kleptomaniac person does not steal with the intention of becoming rich. It is done only for mental satisfaction and to pacify the urge of stealing that comes from within to an affected person. The patient usually does not care about the object he steals, but he only cares about the act of stealing. Usually, kleptomaniac patients steal insignificant things. When an affected patient becomes extremely nervous or fearful, they tend to steal an object. After the act, they feel much better and relieved. Later, a feeling of guilt arises in the person about his stealing act.
  2. Treat the affected person gently: A kleptomaniac person requires love, care and great understanding from his/her loved ones or family members in order to recover. The problem and the situation must be recognized and perceived carefully. A person close to the patient should deal with him gently and try to make him understand. In many situations, a kleptomaniac may be aware of his actions but does not confess to avoid harassment.
  3. The situation is different from stealing: It must be kept in mind that the actions of a kleptomaniac cannot be exactly termed as stealing. Stealing is an organized activity done by conscious individuals in order to gain something material or money related. Kleptomania is an act of impulse which a patient conducts for psychological satisfaction. The patients are fully aware that stealing is not the right thing, but yet they cannot control their impulse to steal.
  4. Treatment procedures: Once a kleptomaniac person accepts that they are suffering from a disorder, professional help must be taken. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is the primary treatment for kleptomania. This includes aversion therapy where a distraction is created when a person develops the impulse to steal an object. Systematic desensitization is another process where a patient is made to imagine a scenario to get over the urge of stealing. Covert desensitization makes a patient imagine negative impacts of the stealing act such as arrest or harassment.

The social life of a kleptomaniac becomes very difficult and both the patient, and his family are subjected to a lot of trouble and harassment. Necessary measures must be taken for kleptomania. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
