The Best Food

General Physician,

The best foods to replenish electrolytes

Get to know the foods - and electrolytes - that will keep us healthy and boost our performance.

Dehydration:

Dehydration occurs when our body loses more fluid than you take in. When the normal water content of our body is reduced, it upsets the balance of minerals (salts and sugar) in our body, which affects the way it functions. Water makes up over two-thirds of the healthy human body. It lubricates the joints and eyes, aids digestion, flushes out waste and toxins, and keeps the skin healthy.

Some of the early warning signs of dehydration include:

Feeling thirsty and lightheadeda dry mouthtirednesshaving dark coloured, strong-smelling urinepassing urine less often than usual

A baby may be dehydrated if they:

Have a sunken soft spot (fontanelle) on their headhave few or no tears when they cryhave fewer wet nappiesare drowsythe body is affected even when we lose a small amount of fluid.

Things to remeber during the time of dehydration.

Sodium chloride:-

 • Functions: Influences fluid regulation and allows for proper cell signaling.
 • Best foods: It’s not difficult to find salt in the typical diet, but some foods are obviously better choices than others. Opt for foods like celery, canned vegetables, whole grain breads and broth-based soups that deliver nutrients in addition to salt.

Potasium:-

 • Functions: Works with sodium to improve nerve signaling.
 • Best foods: Tomatoes, citrus fruits, melons, potatoes, bananas, milk, coconut water, avocados.

Calcium:-

 • Functions: Assists in muscle contraction and nerve transmission.
 • Best foods: Milk, sardines, cottage cheese, calcium-set tofu, mustard greens, kale.

Magniesium:-

 • Functions: Activates nearly 100 enzymes in the body for proper nerve and muscle health.
 • Best foods: Bran, fortified breakfast cereals, seeds, soybeans, nuts, spinach.

Best beverages:-

Water is often the best choice for hydration, but during extreme temps or long workouts, replacing electrolytes and carbohydrates are key to healthy hydration.

Prepared: Specially formulated sports drinks like eas hydrate and rehydration solutions like pedialyte® contain scientifically-backed levels of electrolytes and carbohydrates for optimum fluid replacement. Get the powder stick packs to easily add to water.

Natural: While they are not designed for precise hydration, natural rehydration options include caeineand sugar-free drinks like herbal tea, milk and even coconut water.

Top Health Benefits Of Super Food Avocado

M.B.B.S,C.C.A,D.C.A,AASECT,FPA,AAD,M.I.M.S
General Physician,
Top Health Benefits Of Super Food Avocado

Top health benefits of super food avocado

Avocado commonly know as butter-fruit & biological name: persea americana

Names in other languages: Makhanphal (hindi), vennai pazham (tamil), alpukat (marathi), mager nashpati (urdu), benne hannu (kannada)

Cardiovascular health:-

While 77% of its calories come from fat, the majority comprises of oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid which reduces dangerous ldl cholesterol in the blood while increasing the favourable hdl cholesterol. The fats in avocado resist heat-induced oxidation which makes avocado oil a healthier cooking oil.

Weight loss:-

Avocados have a high fibre content (7 grams of fibre in a 100 gm serving), with almost 25% of the fibre being soluble fibre. Plus the monounsaturated fatty acidsare not stored as fat and work as slow burning energy, leaving you feeling full for longer.

Hyper tension:-

Potassium is important to keep blood pressure levels at its best behaviour, but unfortunately, most people do not get enough of this mineral in their diet. This could increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney disease. Avocados have a richer potassium content than bananas. The oleic acid and dietary fibre in avocados further help normalize blood sugar levels.

Cancer prevention:-

Avocados are filled with antioxidant carotenoids like alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin which protect the cells against free radical damage.

Diabetes control:-

Living with diabetes? make avocados an essential part of your daily diet and see your ‘bad’ ldl cholesterol drop and the ‘good’ hdl cholesterol go up thanks to the oleic acid content. The high monounsaturated fats also help reduce high triglyceride levels and improve insulin function andblood glucose levels.

Soft, healthy skin:-

The monounsaturated fats and omega-9 fats improve the skin appearance by maintaining the moisture in the epidermal layer and repairing damaged skin cells. A healthy intake of monounsaturated fat is important to regulate sebum production to control unwanted acne and blackheads. If you are pressed for time and are unable to use avocado face packs, learn to incorporate a moisturizing cream like olay total effects day cream in your routine that also has anti-ageing properties.

Arthritis treatment:-

The high levels of monounsaturated fats, phytosterols, antioxidants like vitamin e, vitamin c and various carotenoids help curb the inflammation that causes arthritis.

Constipation:-

The high soluble fibre content kicks the bowels into action and improves digestion.

Pregnant women:-

A higher concentration of folate (folic acid) is one of the most important avocado health benefits for women, both before and after pregnancy.

Better eye health:-

Eyes are something we pay the least attention to but an avocado-rich diet can do that job as not only are they rich in antioxidant including lutein and zeaxant but also increase antioxidant absorption from other foods. Lutein and zeaxanthin reduce the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.

All About Acne

MBBS, DDV
Dermatologist, Mumbai
All About Acne

What is Acne?

Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilo sebaceous follicles (i.e. Hair with oil producing glands attached to hair) characterized by comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules, pustules, nodules and ultimately leading to scars.

Who gets Acne?
Close to 100% of people between the ages of twelve and seventeen have at least an occasional whitehead, blackhead or pimple regardless of race or ethnicity. Acne starts between the ages of ten and fifteen years of age and usually lasts till twenty years of age; however, acne can persist into the late twenties or thirties or even beyond. Some people get acne for the first time as adults and this is known as adult acne.

What are the causes of Acne?

 • Bacteria: Bacteria that normally lives on the skin plays a role in acne development. The bacteria are known as propionibacterium acnes (p. acnes). The bacteria content can increase in people whose faces are not clean.
 • Hormones: During the teen years increased levels of sex hormones causes the oil glands of the skin to produce increased amount of oil. These excess skin oils tend to bind with cellular debris causing a blockage and producing a fertile environment for the bacteria to grow.

The bacteria causes inflammation, pus, swelling and redness. In adult acne, excessive hormones produced due to polycystic ovaries and other hormonal imbalances causing excess oil production and inflammation, which leads to acne.

What are the factors that precipitate or aggravate acne?

 • Stress- Stress is frequently implicated in aggravation of acne while acne itself induces stress.
 • Sweat- Sweating in a hot and humid environment causes deterioration in 15% of acne patients.
 • Menstruation- Pre menstrual flare of acne occurs in 70% of female acne patients.
 • Friction and pressure- Friction and pressure from helmets, backpacks and tight collars can induce blackheads and papules. Pressure from face massages or facials can aggravate acne.
 • Pregnancy- Pregnancy has an unpredictable effect on acne. Pre-existing acne may aggravate or remit during pregnancy.
 • Diet- High glycemic load foods (sugar loaded and starchy foods), oily foods may aggravate acne.
 • Drugs- Oral contraceptives, anti tuberculosis medication, oral steroids, anti depressants may aggravate acne.

It is advisable to visit a board certified dermatologist for treatment of acne instead of over the counter treatment as the dermatologist treats the root cause of acne.

I am 45 years old male. I am diabetic person. I want to ask some vegetarian breakfast which lows my blood sugar level. I check my blood sugar level after 2 hours of eating food and it was 321 mg/dl. Please advice me some vegetarian food which helps me for reducing blood sugar level.

I am 45 years old male. I am diabetic person. I want to ask some vegetarian breakfast which lows my blood sugar level...
Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. I get a feeling that I had answered this or a very similar query, because the PP blood glucose level mentioned was 321 mg. If you are the same person, my answer is again same. There is no special breakfast for lowering blood glucose. Basically when we take any food (which contains carbohydrates) plus also proteins & fat it is bound to increase glucose level. All the items consumed in breakfast like paratha, dosa, idli, upma, poha, bread (including brown bread), cereals etc. All contain starch, hence blood glucose is bound to go up. Even taking only fruits also will increase some amount of glucose. Therefore, what is most important is to control blood glucose with appropriate medication, then take a restricted diet that provides exact amount of calories based on ideal body weight (in your case 75 kgs), extent of daily physical exercise and considering need for weight reduction. Plus increase intake of green leafy vegetables, salads and permitted fruits (about 100 g a day). Ideally in good controlled diabetes fasting blood glucose should b e<100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c%<6.8. This will help in either preventing or postponing long term complications related to diabetes. Otherwise, in an uncontrolled diabetes all the complications can be seen to occur early and with an unexpected severity. If you are seriously considering achieving a very good blood glucose control (as mentioned earlier), then please come in a private conversation with current details of fasting, PP glucose levels, HbA1c%, dietary pattern and extent of daily exercise, then I will be able to guide, as in this communication we are supposed talk only about general guidelines without giving any prescriptions. Thanks.

Types and Diagnosis of Uterine Fibroids

Fellowship In Minimal Access Surgery, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Hyderabad
Types and Diagnosis of Uterine Fibroids

Noncancerous growths of the muscle tissue surrounding the uterus are known as uterine fibroids. This is a common disease which about 70 to 80% of women contract by the time they are 50 years of age. The uterine fibroids can sometimes be very big and cause heavy periods as well as severe abdominal pain while at other times, uterine fibroids give no signs or symptoms whatsoever and go away on their own. This is why it is crucial to know what type of uterine fibroids you have and how to diagnose them. Here are the types of uterine fibroids and how to diagnose them;

Types
There are three main types of uterine fibroids. They are;

1. Intramural fibroids
The most common type of uterine fibroids are intramural fibroids. They typically appear in the endometrium and may grow larger which results in your womb getting stretched.

2. Subserosal fibroids
Subserosal fibroids are called so because they form on the serosa. The serosa is the outside of your uterus. Sometimes, Subserosal fibroids may grow so large that your uterus appears bigger on one side.

3. Pedunculated fibroids
Pedunculated fibroids tumors are basically Subserosal fibroids with a stem. A base which supports the tumor is called the stem.

Diagnosis
There are a number of tests done to diagnose uterine fibroids. They are;

1. Pelvic exam
A pelvic exam is a thorough inspection of a woman’s pelvic area. The organs which are in the pelvic area include the cervix, ovaries, uterus and vagina. Normally, this and the next test in this article are enough to diagnose uterine fibroids.

2. Medical history
The history of your periods as well as the other symptoms you have will often be enough to diagnose the uterine fibroids. If your medical history is not enough, then you might need to undergo a pelvic exam.

3. Pelvic ultrasound
An ultrasound is when high-intensity sound waves are used to produce images of the pelvic area. This is only done when a pelvic exam and your medical history are not enough to diagnose uterine fibroids.

Tips for Better Control Over Premature Ejaculation

Tips for Better Control Over Premature Ejaculation

A number of problems when contracted can affect your life and the life of your partner, especially problems which are related to your physical relationship. Premature ejaculation is one such problem and it refers to the inability to retain the erection until the end of the intercourse and usually happens when the male ends up ejaculating sooner than planned or immediately upon penetration. Premature ejaculation is a condition that many men suffer due to the advancement of age as well as low pelvic strength and other ailments. Also, it can be caused due to stress and panic regarding one's performance. Whatever be the cause, it is an embarrassing situation that calls for help if it persists for too long. Here are a few tips to ensure that you gain better control over premature ejaculation.

 1. Deep breathing Exercise: Sometimes, too much of excitement can lead to a variety of problems including premature ejaculation. If this becomes a normal occurrence, you can try practicing deep breathing during the act of sex to calm yourself down and slow down the frenzy so that you are more attuned to your surroundings and partner rather than yourself and the panic you may be feeling. Taking deep and slow gulps of air can ensure that you focus on the act rather than getting caught up in the excitement.
 2. Medications: there are broadly two kinds of medical treatments - local application anaesthetic gels that numb the area around the tip of penis and tablets that prolong ejaculation time. One needs to consult a sexologist, psychiatrist or a urologist to know more about them.
 3. Stop and Start: This is a method that many sexologists recommend. The stop and start method is one that will have to be practiced individually so that you are able to retain more control over your ejaculation when you are with your partner. Basically, in this method, you are required to start the process of masturbation and stop just short of ejaculation. After doing this several times and on a regular basis, you will find that your brain reacts in the same way when you are having intercourse, which will delay the ejaculation to a normal period.
 4. Kegel: If you thought that kegel exercises are only for women, then you need to think again. Premature ejaculation also signifies low pelvic strength for many cases and you would do well to invest time in a few exercises like the kegel, which will build up your pelvic strength so that you are able to control premature ejaculation in a better way.

Persistent problems that are not fixed with these methods should be addressed with a visit to a doctor.

HEIGHT GROWTH IS UNDER CONTROL OF HGH Human growth hormone (HGH) is a vital component of the human endocrine system. It is secreted by the pituitary gland, a small gland located at the base of the brain that produces several hormones. In childhood and adolescence this hormone is necessary to promote growth in height. In adulthood, its presence leads to a healthier body composition and is responsible for such important jobs such as: Keeping your body lean Decreasing fat accumulation Strengthening your bones Protecting your organs from the decline that occurs with age Promoting more rapid hair and nail growth Improving circulation Giving a more favorable cholesterol profile Helping protect you from the consequences of aging Unfortunately, natural production of HGH declines as you get older. This progressive deficiency, beginning for most in our 20s, leads to a reduction in lean body mass and bone mineral density, an increase in body fat – especially abdominal, and a worsened cardiovascular risk profile. All in all, you begin to look and feel older as HGH declines. The ways we can stimulate this again in Natural way is to do the following things: EAT more of Fresh Fruits and vegetables. Include more of calcium containing foods like dairy products, Increase Intake of Vitamin D ,you can get it from Mushrooms, Fish,Tofu, eggs. Also add Zinc in diet through peas, almonds, walnuts, peanut butter egg. Start doing Bhastrika pranayam for 15 mins once daily followed by Anulom Vilom 15 mins (start from 2 mins and later increase as per your energy levels) followed by (do alternately alternate asanas or you can do all as per your time & Energy )Taad Asana 5 repetitions, Vrikshaasana 5reps, Surya Namaskar 2 repetetions, adhomukh shwan asan 5, Trikonasan5 and lastly do shawaasan for 5-10 mins. Many factors are involved in the process of hair loss like Tension or stress, chemical damage, nutritional deficiency, enviornmental factors, unadequate sleep or diet etc. A careful analysis of the person is required to initiate the treatment From Home remedy part you can use following: Take 100 ml coconut oil boil 2-4 pcs of amla fruit n 8-10 curry leaves in that oil till fruit n leaves turn black. Filter and strain. Massage it on scalp with finger tips gently. Wash hair next morning with curd mixed with besan. In ready to use you can start using rishi grow hair oil at bed time & wash with robin plus herbal shampoo. Clean oil is recommended if dandruff is the reason as this oil treats it in just two applications along with reducing itching. Internal ayurvedic medicines can be provided after studying your bodily constitution as per ayurveda. This process should be continued for two months and your hair fall will reduce to normal. As it's a very slow process so you can't see results in a week. Eat more of green leafy vegies and fresh seasonal fruits. Take amla powder or amla murabba/ carrot murabba twice daily. Use neem wood comb for managing hair and this should be changed regularly. Reduce your stress by yoga, Pranayam and meditation. Add some coconut daily in your diet. Keep water in copper vessel overnight and drink in the morning empty stomach. Avoid chinese foods and food stuffs packed in plastics. Avoid white flour (maida), excessive salt and spices. Let me know after it and I will advise accordingly.

Earlier the doctor diagnosed my situation as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. So I am taking medicines for IBS for two months. But no relief at all. 70 days gone, I had a severe abdominal pain. I can not walk, can not move, can not low down or bend because of pain in my intestines. My exam are coming, my future will be spoiled if not treated soon. All my ultrasounds, x-ray, blood sugar, BP, urine is normal. Except 4.9 mm right kidney stone. So, the doctor takes it very lightly. But after two month when I done my stool test, mucus is found. Dear Lybrate user there can be several factors behind hair loss & dandruff such as environmental effects, aging, stress, nutritional deficiencies, genetic factors, scalp infections, use of wrong or chemically enriched hair products, certain medicines and medical conditions like thyroid disorder, autoimmune diseases, anaemia etc. Drink once in day spinach & lettuce juice for healthy hair growth. Apply soaked fenugreek (overnight) seed paste to hair and rinse after 30 minutes. Follow it for month. Usage of aloe vera to hair may reduce hair from scalp and itching Proper hair and scalp massage will increase blood flow to the hair follicles, condition the scalp, and enhance the strength of your hair’s roots. It will also promote relaxation and reduce feelings of stress. You can use hair oils like coconut or almond oil, olive oil, castor oil, amla oil, or others. Add a few drops of rosemary essential oil to the base oil for better and faster results. Take homeopathic medicine kali carb 6x thrice a day Thanks.

Nurition Tips For Healthy Summers

15 nutrition tips for a healthy summer

Summer weekends at the beach, backyard barbecues, and outdoor dinners are finally here, but these gatherings are often loaded with high-calorie pasta salads, chips, ice cream, cocktails and beers. Enjoy your warm weather favorites while keeping your nutrition in check with the tips below.

1. Drink green tea instead of sweet tea. Green tea has a natural component that helps speed up your metabolism. Skip the box tea and opt for the brew-it-yourself with boiling water and a tea-bag-type tea.

2. Serve seafood. Summer is the ideal time to get the freshest catch from your local grocer. Grill salmon, tuna, lobster, steamer clams, and calamari for a low-calorie, protein-packed lunch or dinner.

3. Don’t skip breakfast. When you wake up in the morning, your body is running on fumes. Eating a breakfast with protein, carbs, and healthy fat kicks your metabolism into high gear and provides energy for the day.

4. Enjoy summer fruits and veggies. It’s easy to sink into a vegetable rut, eating the same boring veggies week after week, but with summer comes fresh choices. Including a mix of in-season colorful veggies in your meals gives your body a nutrient kick.

5. Snack at work. Bring snacks to work and graze throughout the day. When you eat more often—five to six times per day—you’re far less likely to overeat and more likely to stay energized.

6. Grab a sports drink. For workouts lasting longer than 45 minutes, drinking a sports drink every 15 to 20 minutes can help you maintain energy, increase endurance, and stay hydrated.

7. Drink healthier beers. If you're going to indulge, opt for antioxidant-packed craft brews like fuller's organic honey dew ale or stoudt's fat dog imperial oatmeal stout. To save calories, choose beers with less than 100 calories like select 55 and miller lite.

8. Hydrate often. The summer heat makes you more susceptible to dehydration. Start off your day by drinking two glasses of water and keep drinking at each meal, as well as before and after your workout, to stay hydrated. Carry a water bottle with you as a reminder to stay hydrated.

9. Cook meals together. Involve your friends and family in your healthy lifestyle this summer. A simple way to start: plan meals, shop, and cook with your spouse and kids.

10. Downsize your dinnerware. We’re not talking about buying new plates, just using the smaller ones in your set for meals like lunch and dinner. Cornell university researchers found that by switching from 12- to 10-inch plates anyone can reduce calorie consumption by 20 to 22 percent and lose nearly two pounds per month. And that’s without changing any other aspect of your diet.

11. Recover with a post-workout shake. After exercising, blend your favorite summer fruits and a scoop of whey protein into a shake to kickstart the muscle-building process, help your body recover from training, and boost your energy levels.

12. Pre-plan your meals. You plan your weekend getaways and activities for summer. Why not your meals? make it easy by preparing all of your food on sunday so that you have enough meals for the week. The best part: you'll save money.

13. Eat healthy at the beach. Ice cream stands and high-calorie barbecues are bound to put a damper on your diet, so stay clear of these temptations by being prepared. Pack a cooler with ice, bottled water, sandwiches on whole grain breads, pita chips, hummus, yogurt and lots of fruit. You’ll feel healthier and happier after your day at the beach.

14. Give your house a summer cleaning. You need an environment that reflects your healthy way of living and your summer fitness goals. To start, remove unhealthy foods from your home (so you’re not tempted). While you’re at it, stock your office with fruit, nuts, and other healthy snacks.

15. Build a better burger. Create a healthier burger with whole wheat buns, lean meats, and delicious toppings like pineapple, wasabi, guacamole, and feta cheese.
