How To Prevent Diabetes?

Diabetes patients should make a habit of eating cucumber regularly, it is very helpful in preventing and curing diabetes.

I have been suffering from Thyroid since last seven years. At present my TSH reading is 0.36 and I am taking Thyronorm 100 mg daily. Can I reduce the dose to 75 mg because of low TSH reading. Sometime back the dose was increased to 100 mg from 75 mg because of high TSH.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. TSH 0.36 mU/ L is fine, there is no need to reduce the dosage. If one changes the dosage often then that will lead to a considerable variation in TSH levels and there will be proper control on hypothyroidism. One can look at reducing the dose only when TSH levels go <0.1 mU/L. Thanks.

Hello, Thanks for the query. There are some benefits claimed about drinking of ed wine. But my suggestion is better to avoid any alcoholic drinks. There are really no major benefits at all. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. 300 mg blood glucose is very high. (no mention whether it s fasting or PP). You need to start appropriate treatment with proper drugs, plus diet control and exercise. All te things have to be done simultaneously. My suggestion to come in a private conversation with following details: FBG, PP & HbA1c, dietary habits, extent of daily exercise Looking at your weight and height it is clear that with a BMI of 31.25 kgs/M2, you have obesity, which can be a major contributor for high blood glucose. Thanks.

Hi mother is age of 50 recently tested for thyroid profile and found T3 thyroxine levels are 12. TOTAL THYROXINE (T4) C.L.I.A 12.4 μg/dl 4.5-12 THYROID STIMULATING HORMONE (TSH) C.L.I.A 6.18 μIU/ml 0.3-5.5 kindly help what type of treat she needs to undergo.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. The levels mentioned are fine, only TSH is marginally high. This is called as sub-clinical hypothyroidism. There is no treatment recommended in this situation. However, if there are any troublesome symptoms then treatment can be considered. Thanks.

I am a thyroid patient. I take 125 mg pill every day on morning. After 3 mnth I checked my thyroid. Its normal then should I change my pill or should I take low mg pill please suggest.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. When you are on treatment with levothyroxine for hypothyroidism, then TSH should be maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L, for remaining free from all symptoms. Since you have not mentioned the actual TSH levels, it is not possible to give any opinion. However, please understand that due to treatment TSH does come to normal level, that does not mean one should reduce the dose. Repeated alteration of dosage can affect the out come. Thanks.

I am diabetic and also hypertension. On medication for more than 15 years. I am 65 years old and a retired person lives in Thane (Maharashtra ). At present on allopathic treatment. Can someone suggest/guide some alternates. Ayurveda or Homeopathic treatment will be more helpful. Or changing dietary plan.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. TDiabetes can only be treated with modern medicines. Other drugs belonging to ayurveda or homeopathy, really do not have any specific action. A lot of claims are made, which are unsubstantiated. Those drugs can be taken as supportive to allopathic treatment. But if you want to shift totally to those, then my advise is please do not do that. Since there is no mention of fasting, Pp blood glucose levels & HbA1c%, it is difficult to know whether your diabetes is in control or not. Ideally FBG should be <100 mg, PP 160 to 170 mg & HbA1c%<6.8. Thanks.

What type of oil should be used for cooking for diabetic patient? We use soybean oil is it good or bad? Please suggest good oil for controlling diabetes?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. For diabetic person or for a normal healthy individual, no single oil is perfect. It is better to use two or three different oils. Like for making vegetables one type (ground nut, or sun flower or saflower or soy oil) for tadaka use ghee, for salads olive oil etc. Combination of oils is always good. Thanks.

Hello doctors, im a 28 years old man, My glycemic index two weeks ago was 4.4 mmol. Today after craving on sugar, oily foods and sleep, it is 8.9 mmol. Does it mean I have diabetes?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Hello, Thanks for the query. Glycemic index is given for different foods. That tells how fast that food gets converted to glucose in the body. Meaning high glycemic index products like rice, idli, sweets potato get converted to glucose rapidly raising the blood glucose level. I am unable to understand what are you actually hinting. We only have blood glucose level. Thanks.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. I have read all the details given. She does seem to have multiple problems. For swelling in the body there many reasons like uncontrolled hypothyroidism (with high TSH), high BP, kidney related issues, so without knowing the exact details it is difficult to give any opinion. My suggestion is please send following details of her: TSH, T4 & T3 levels, BP readings, blood glucose levels (both fasting and after food) and CBC (complete blood cell count) and lipid profile. Plus her weight, height whether she does any exercise (walking) and current medications with dosages. It is better if you come in a private conversation then I will be able to guide specifically and even prescribe the medications. Even to advise you I need to know all the details. Thanks.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Your information is very general, so difficult to comment. There is no mention whether she has hypo or hyperthyroidism. It is better if full details are mentioned. Please understand whichever thyroid condition it may be, treatment has to be continued for lifetime. Particularly in hypothyroidism she has to take prescribed amount of levothyroxine tablets daily without fail for her lifetime. If dosage is frequently altered or drug is stopped in between, then TSH levels will go up. All the symptoms reappear. Plus all the instructions regarding taking of the tablet that is - early morning on empty stomach, nothing there after for 1 to 1 and half hour, should be followed. She has to restrict her diet. Avoid soy beans, soy containing products and use whole grain flour for roti and chapati. Stop taking foods made from maida. If you have any doubts please come back. It is better if you come in a private conversation with all details like TSH, T4 & T3 levels and current dosage, her weight and height and symptoms if any, then I will be able to guide specifically and help in controlling the condition. Thanks.

You can take all the fruits, but in between the meals and not with the meals. However, if you have high potassium levels then only few fruits are permitted.

I'm diabetic 38 years old woman I'm taking exermet gm forte 2 BD, hcqs 200 OD, inogla 20 OD, etoshine 90 OD, but for 3,4 days I got pain in my lower back, for Relief can I take voveran injection?

BHMS
Homeopath, Chennai
The usual cause of low back pain is the sedentary lifestyle that we lead these days. There is hardly any movement. We remain seated most of the time and stand for very short periods of time. Unfortunately walking, running and cycling like activities are also not a part of our daily routine. To add to it, our diet consists more and more of junk food. Fresh fruits, vegetables and high fibre foods are consumed less and less. This is a worldwide trend and is seen across all ages and cultures. These daily practices lead to obesity. The increased body weight puts lot of pressure on the spine which has to bear all the extra unwanted weight. The back muscles which are already weak due to lack of exercise and wrong posture are unable to cope with this increased load. This causes pain in the back muscles. When it comes to the medicinal treatment, homeopathic medicines are very helpful. They not only treat the acute stages but are also very helpful in the chronic stage of back pain. It must be said here that homeopathy offers a much better alternative for the permanent cure for low back pain. The focus of the homeopath is not just to relieve the immediate pain but to also eliminate the root cause of the pain. That is precisely why the homeopath asks so many questions which may or may not seem related to your immediate problem. A common cause that is easily overlooked is the presence of stress in an individual. Mental stress can also contribute to low back pain and should be taken into account while taking the details of the patient. This is absolutely necessary if you want a lasting cure You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance.

Sir, I am suffering from thyroid hypothyroidism for 8 years taking thyronorm 150 mg but now I have problem in my both legs and joint. I use tablet dexona and cetrizine as I have some problem of asthma and itching since 8 years. I also have high BP taking AGENAL AT 1 daily .I also feel problem in nerves. TSH level also increased sussagest some medicines. Thanks.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. When on treatment with thyroxine tablets taking adequate dose, TSH should be maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L, then only all the symptoms are in check. High TSH level means hypothyroidism is not in control. Secondly if you are on Dexona (for what reason is not clear), that can also upset the control. For asthma there are inhalers which offer better relief. Joint and muscle pains can be due to uncontrolled hypothyroidism. Plus your weight also is much higher with a BMI of 29.16 kgs showing obesity. This could be due to uncontrolled hypothyroidism. You have not mentioned the BP readings. From the info given it looks like a re - look has to be given to the total treatment, diet, exercise and various medications being taken. Thanks.
