The Role Of Medication In Treating Depression!

What are antidepressants and mood elevators?

Often depression or mood changes are caused by the imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain. Anti-depressants or mood elevators are medications that are prescribed to patients with depression to alleviate their symptoms. Anti-depressants are not solely used for the treatment of depression, it is also prescribed in other psychiatric conditions which includes anxiety disorders, social anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), dysthymia (mild chronic depression) etc.

With time, the use of anti-depressants has been on the rise. Although, anti-depressants do not cure your depression, it relieves the symptoms of the same. Anti-depressants come in various types. The first one you try may not benefit you; however you must consult your doctor and find the right choice of medication for your condition.

Anti-depressant adherence
Non-adherence to anti-depressants can have major consequences on your health. It also majorly contributes to the under treatment of anxiety and depression in maximum cases in the population. The reasons why people do not comply with their therapy or treatment are various; forgetting to take the medicine being the primary one. Other factors that contribute to non-adherence of anti-depressants include-

  1. Fear of addiction
  2. High cost of medications
  3. Fear of drug-induced sexual dysfunction
  4. Delayed onset of action of the medication
  5. Poor instructions and protocols given by the doctor
  6. Fear of side effects

Adherence to the medication with proper guidance from the doctor has seen to decrease the symptoms of depression in the patients, leading them get back to their normal life. Under-treatment of depression can become fatal. If the depression escalates, suicidal tendencies can follow. Apart from these, suddenly stopping the medication has been associated with withdrawal symptoms which can get fatal in severe cases. In recent times, depression has become a common problem with the rise of fatalities caused by depression. As important as it may be to consult a doctor to get your symptoms diagnosed and get the right treatment, it is of equal importance that one adheres to the therapy and abides by the guidelines.

I am also on concor am 5 & telsar h for my bp for over 10 years. I am a 57 year old male. I also seem to have put on about 10kgs weight which I am now unable to lose despite exercising. Dear, all of your conditions including hypertension are stress related. You are having stress, still. But you do not do any corrective measures. The best way to be away from stress is to exercise, being active and entertained. You are putting weight not because of stress, but because of your life style. Changing your life style should help you. You may post a private question to me. I will help you. Take care.

Can I do a job or business since I am a schizophrenia patient and my doctor advised me against working since I am on antipsychotic I am married with a kid and to support them I have to try but every time I am kicked out of jobs when the employer knows about my condition.

Doctorate in Clinical Psychology

Hi, Better to avoid working now as you may not be able to concentrate on work with antipsychotic medication. I am sure with the use of medication and proper counselling you will be able to get back to work soon. You do not need to mention about your psychiatric condition to the employer unless they ask for it since our society is not open to psychological disorders even though psychological disorders are just as common as any fever, cold or any other physical ailment which affect the human body now and then.

Hye. Thanks for the query. There must be some change, either in your eating habits, activity levels or stress that has caused weight gain. Also lack of physical activity may have stopped or reduced leading to weight gain. Also your poor eating habits, lack of exercise may have led to hypothyroidism. There’s no overnight fix when it comes to healthy weight loss, but you can adjust your lifestyle to promote quick, natural weight loss for the benefit of your health and your appearance. Successful, long-term weight management needs to focus on more than the food you eat and the pounds you lose. It needs to focus on your overall health. Reshape your body and your lifestyle by adopting healthy habits and breaking unhealthy ones. Replace all processed foods in your diet with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean meats, eggs, legumes, nuts, seeds and seafood. Focus on the variety of whole, unprocessed foods you can eat instead of dwelling on the junk food you eliminated from your diet. Eat smaller portions at every meal and avoid going back for seconds. Take a smaller scoop of rice, half of a piece of chicken instead of a whole piece and one less egg in your morning omelet, for example. Make time for breakfast every morning. Eating breakfast helps prevent overeating and is a habit of people who successfully lose weight. Pack to-go meals instead of eating convenience foods when you’re not home. Store foods like chopped fruits and vegetables or cooked grains, legumes, eggs and meats in your refrigerator so you always have something to grab when you’re in a rush. Buy fresh vegetables and fruits from the grocery store if you forget to bring healthful food from home. When you can’t avoid dining at a restaurant, opt for a salad as a starter, and always ask for the dressing on the side. Clear soups, lean meats, seafood and grain-based dishes like roti, whole grain bread are other good choices. Exercise for 30 to 60 minutes at least three times per week to build muscle and burn more calories. Pilates, strength training, aerobics, swimming, dancing and yoga or a sport like football are ideal choices. If you’re new to exercising, start with brisk walking and jogging. Adopt physically demanding hobbies like bicycling, hiking, jogging, power walking to promote faster weight loss. If you don’t have time for new hobbies, increase your physical activity with things like walking the dog, playing with the kids or jogging instead of driving to a nearby store or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

Dear lybrate-user, welcome to lybrate. You must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. If the task is boring, it is natural that that person will sleep or feel sleepy. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Take care.

Dear lybrate user, welcome to lybrate. From the given details, it seems that you have general anxiety disorder and related lack of self confidence. General anxiety disorder treatment consists of cognitive behavioral therapy, life style changes, relaxation therapy and meditation. Once you learn how to manage your anxiety yourself with the help of the above treatment methods, you will be cured and you can stop the medicines if any. The process could take some time according to the depth of the problem and the circumstances at which the patient lives. Anyhow, there is nothing to worry. Most of the psychological problems can be cured with scientific therapy methods. Take care.

First off all do half hour meditation and yoga in morning and don't think so much about those people and first off all you have to feel you are the best and do things which excites you like dance, eat, hair style, bike riding like whatever. You want to do and this negative things you are feeling is because you are not happy inside and you are not confident so be confident and happy. You can do any thing in this world. Don't make your own perceptions about peoples what they are thinking. And please do meditation and yes I want to give you advice to watch sandeep maheshwari you tube videos they might help you. If this will not help I can give you homeopathic remedies without sideeffect. Because mental health affects physical health.

I am unable to attend public functions or socialise with other people. I feel discomfort while doing so. I prefer staying at my home rather than going for it. From my experience whenever I go to functions or is in a crowded place I feel like stressed and starts to sweat continuously and also my heart rate increases. Also I talk very less and, even don't know what to talk. I prefer alone with my family. It is difficult for me to make eye contact with other people and sometimes I feel that I am being watched. What is the reason for this.
