You can clandestinely mix the medicine with her food or drinks and she will at least improve enough that she may become amenable to counseling. She needs to speak to someone and as well as socialize rather comfortably. If you speak to the doctor, s/he will prescribe the medication that can be mixed with her food or beverage. There is some medication in liquid form too, which can be explored under these circumstances. But remember this is to aid her accessing therapy eventually. Once she goes for counseling lots of possibilities will open up.

I am suffering from OCD. Many thought come to my mind like while washing clothes thought whether I apply soap on clothes or not so keep on applying soap on clothes. Always think about cleaning room, clothes and things near me. please suggest me to get rid of such problems.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common mental health problem. Symptoms typically include recurring thoughts and repetitive actions in response to the recurring thoughts. A common example is recurring thoughts about germs and dirt, with a need to wash your hands repeatedly to "clean off the germs" However, there are many other examples like sexual thoughts, counting, checking, orderliness, etc. The usual treatments are cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant medicine, or both. Treatment often works well to reduce the symptoms and distress of OCD greatly. Consult a psychiatrist. All the best.

I lost My Friend. He is very close and Now without Him I feel very Lonely and depressed Too. What should I do to get ...
Losing a person who is close to you is very painful. I can imagine how sad you must be. A friend is someone who gives you unconditional support and love. Please understand that you have lost something valuable in your life and if you feel like crying, please cry or share your feelings with someone close to you. Remember, whenever you lose a person, some part of you is also gone with that person, because of your attachment with that person. Give yourself time to understand and mourn the loss. Unfortunately, clock cannot be turned back. Hence you need to understand that you need to continue with your life, without your friend now. It will be difficult initially. Whenever you feel sad, accept your emotions and don't try to push them away. It is important to feel that pain and then understand that, this is part of life. Nothing is for ever. Try to remember all the good times you shared together. Also remember that your friend would have liked you, to have happy and peaceful life. You have lost your friend but your life is there in front of you. You need to move on. Moving on with your life, does not mean you are forgetting your friend. Give yourself enough time to soak in the pain and loss and then start reinvesting in life. Take care.

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. There are no effective medicines to directly quit smoking. These medicines manage your anxiety and restlessness related to withdrawal. Deaddiction therapy is more suitable. You can also use nicotine gums for intermittent usage so as to help in quitting smoking. Take care.

Please remember that smoking is toxic to your body, mind and well-being. The earlier you can stop this habit, the healthier it can be for you. The lower taste and sinful habit of smoking can be stopped by replacing it with the higher taste. Simply read nice books which give you a higher meaning to life than chemicals in smoking. In place of smoking, spend your time by doing yoga and chant the names of god who you have faith in. It has been scientifically proved that by doing yoga and chanting, the habit of smoking can be stopped.

I want to study till late hours for my board exams preparation. Please give me some tips on how can I study for a long time?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
It is not the best time for long study because you will deprive yourself of sleep which can cause a lot of other complications apart from loss of memory. Some people have gotten used to night study and it may be, for some only, suitable. So even if you still want to do late study have a very light dinner of proteins, catch an afternoon nap of not more than 45 minutes, having proper lighting so that you do not strain your eyes, drink black coffee or tea, if you feel drowsy (though I prefer that you sleep if you do feel slumber catching up with you), study by writing whenever sleepiness overcomes you, and do not study lying down in yoru bed, ever. A cold shower will also awaken you and if need be some exercise will help too. Short duration for each subject will make it easier to spend long duration of night study. Do not deprive yourself of sleep for a long period of days.

Due to less marks in exam after that I fell depression so give me idea what I do to overcome from depression?

Due to less marks in exam after that I fell depression so give me idea what I do to overcome from depression?
This sounds like an episodal depression and may be easier to resolve. You are disappointed no doubt but life is full of such drawbacks. Fortunately, you have not failed, so take up this as a challenge and work smarter the next time. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

General Physician,
So, what I've to do now to start the treatment for anxiety disorder. As per your reply I've to start to start treatme...
Not everyone who worries a lot has an anxiety disorder. You may be anxious because of an overly demanding schedule, lack of exercise or sleep, pressure at home or work, or even from too much coffee. The bottom line is that if your lifestyle is unhealthy and stressful, you’re more likely to feel anxious—whether or not you actually have an anxiety disorder. So if you feel like you worry too much, take some time to evaluate how well you’re caring for yourself. Do you make time each day for relaxation and fun? Are you getting the emotional support you need? Are you taking care of your body? Are you overloaded with responsibilities? Do you ask for help when you need it? If your stress levels are through the roof, think about how you can bring your life back into balance. There may be responsibilities you can give up, turn down, or delegate to others. If you’re feeling isolated or unsupported, find someone you trust to confide in. Just talking about your worries can make them seem less frightening. Take care of yourself Connect with others. Loneliness and isolation set the stage for anxiety. Decrease your vulnerability by reaching out to others. Make it a point to see friends, join a self-help or support group, or share your worries and concerns with a trusted loved one. Practice relaxation techniques. When practiced regularly, relaxation techniques such as mindfulness meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, and deep breathing can reduce anxiety symptoms and increase feelings of relaxation and emotional well-being. Exercise regularly. Exercise is a natural stress buster and anxiety reliever. To achieve the maximum benefit, aim for at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise on most days. Get enough sleep. A lack of sleep can exacerbate anxious thoughts and feelings, so try to get seven to nine hours of quality sleep a night. If you struggle with sleep, adopting smart sleep habits can make a big difference. Be smart about caffeine and alcohol. If you struggle with anxiety, you may want to consider reducing your caffeine intake or cutting it out completely. Same with alcohol, which can make anxiety worse. Train your brain to stay calm. Worrying is a mental habit you can learn how to break. Strategies such as creating a worry period, challenging anxious thoughts, and learning to accept uncertainty can significantly reduce anxiety and fear. When to seek professional treatment for anxiety disorders While self-help coping strategies for anxiety can be very effective, if your worries, fears, or anxiety attacks have become so great that they’re causing extreme distress or disrupting your daily routine, it is important to seek professional help. The specific treatment approach depends on the type of anxiety disorder and its severity. But in general, most professionals treat anxiety with behavioral therapy, medication, or some combination of the two.

From last 2-3 years, i'm severely facing problem of memory loss/low concentration. I can't keep things memorized/remembered. In childhood I used to be very sharp minded and could remember almost everything. Due to that I feel very low in confidence. Both these things are affecting my performance in my profession also. I try hard to keep it memorized but lose concentration very easily and can't understand complex things note days. Please help.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Here’s some tips to get into a state of deep concentration where work / or studies flow easily so that you can do well in examinations/ and or do your work well. 1) Cut Off the Noise Getting into a state of concentration can take at least fifteen minutes. If you are getting distracted every five, you can’t possibly focus entirely on your work. Request that people don’t interrupt you when working on a big project. If you are required to answer phones and drop-in’s immediately, schedule work when the office is less busy. 2) Structure Your Environment The place you work can have an impact on your ability to focus. Try to locate yourself so you are facing potential distractions such as doors, phones or windows. This way you can take a glance to assess sounds that would otherwise break your focus. 3) Clarify Objectives Know what your goal is clearly before you start. If you aren’t sure what the end result is, the confusion will make it impossible to focus. 4) Divide Blobs. If you have a large project that needs work, clearly identify a path that you will use to get started working on it. If the sequence of actions isn’t obvious, it will be difficult to concentrate. Taking a few minutes to plan not only your end result, but the order you will complete any steps, can save hours in wasted thinking. 5) Know the Rules Get clear on what the guidelines are for the task ahead. What level of quality do you need? What standards do you need to follow? What constraints are there? If the rules aren’t clear from the outset, you will slip out of concentration as you ponder them later. 6) Set a Deadline Deadlines have both advantages and disadvantages when trying to force concentration. A deadline can make it easier to forget the non-essential and speed up your working time. If you give yourself only an hour to design a logo, you will keep it simple and avoid fiddling with extravagant designs. Time limits have disadvantages when they cause you to worry about the time you have left instead of the task itself. 7) Break down Roadblocks Roadblocks occur whenever you hit a tricky problem in your work. This can happen when you run out of ideas or your focus wavers. Break down roadblocks by brainstorming or planning on a piece of paper. Writing out your thought processes can keep you focused even if you might become frustrated. 8) Isolate Yourself Become a hermit and stay away from other people if you want to get work done. Unless your work is based on other people they will only break your focus. Create a private space and refuse to talk to anyone until your work is finished. Put a sign on your door to steer away drop-ins and don’t answer your phone. 9) Healthy Body, Sharper Mind What you put into your body affects the way you concentrate. Nobody would expect peak performance if they showed up drunk to work. But if you allow yourself to get chronic sleep deprivation, overuse stimulants like caffeine or eat dense, fatty foods your concentration will suffer. Try to cut out one of your unhealthy habits for just thirty days to see if there is a difference in your energy levels. I’ve found even small steps can create dramatic changes in my ability to focus. 10) Be Patient Before I write an article, I often sit at my desk for a fifteen or twenty minutes before I put finger on the keyboard. During this time I feel a strong urge to leave or do something else. But I know that if I am patient, I’ll stumble upon an idea to write about and enter a state of flow. Without a little patience, you can’t take advantage of flow when it rushed through you. If you need strong concentration I recommend periods of 90-120 minutes. Any less than that and you will waste too much time getting started before the flow can continue. More than this is possible to sustain focus, but you will probably benefit from a quick break. These are the general guidelines for concentration, studying well or doing your job. Regards.
