I listen to music too much, when ever I am free I just use my earphones and listen to music at a decent volume even during nights I listen to music and go to bed late night So will it effect my listening power? Will I find difficulties in my studies? I meen will it decrease my memory power? Will it affect my brain?

MD - Psychiatry, BHMS
Homeopath, Amravati
Hearing capacity may get impaired due to constant use of earphones. If you r able to concentrate on your work then no need to worry you can continue listening music but it should not become obsession.

My son is hearing impaired and cannot hear upto 120 decibels, further he is having Lipoma glands all over his body, is there any remedy for his cure, he can speak but cannot listen.

Dear Sir, You need to show your son to a neurologist & also get a thorough hearing test done to know exact degree & type of hearing loss. We can also try amplification device if it works with your son, Its advisable to get him to the clinic so that we can check thoroughly. From early childhood, I have severe hearing loss in my right ear. I do not remember whether it was from birth or was a result of some hitting done on my right ear by one of the bullies (i remember the incident remotely, though can not attribute the hearing loss to that). My left ear is perfect and am a healthy guy of 42 years doing very well professionally and part of top management in one of the reputed companies. I had at the age of 18 years went for a ent check up where they diagnosis as severe hearing loss in the right ear. However, when I put in a earphone in my right ear and tightly close my left ear to close any sound, I can remotely hear, but only very light sounds. My query is, can I try to recover my right ear hearing or leave it? Is there any hope of recovery? Though you might say it needs to be checked, but what do you make out first cut from the details that I have provided? Now a days with so much advances in med sciences, I am hoping you cd help me with your valuable advice and way forward.

hi, if its severe loss or damage to your inner ear unfortunately it cannot be reveresed. like you mentioned in the comment that science have advanced to the extent to help the patient to hear better with a better hearing aid and customised solutions as per the reqyirment of the patient. if the loss is creating a serious impact on your lifestyle or ur profession would suggest you to go for a good hearing device. if you are shy to wear a external device you have various models which can fit inside your ear as well and that may give a bit of sigh from your condition

Dr. Sir, I suffer from profound Hearing loss. I am Male 68 yrs, Veg, 74 Kgs, Non Smoker. My Doctor advised me to take "High Res CT Scan Temporal Bone (Bilateral) Does this give only the cause/source for Hearing loss OR does it give any other problems (not related to Hearing) also. OR can we include some other tests also, to check if there are any other problems. Please clarify.

MBBS, MS - ENT, Fellowship in Otology
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Delhi
Hrct of temporal bones will be helpful in determining cause of hearing loss, if there are is any tumor in the temporal bone or auditory nerve, any structural abnormality or trauma. Other tests like audiometry also need to be done.

hi, I can understand your feelings. But if the doctors are suggesting that your problem is irreversible then don't fight with it. Just accept it. You have tried your best. Now it's time to concentrate on your strength not on your weakness. Find a job which is suitable to your present health condition. Now a days many options are available. Keep Helen Keller or Prof. Stephen Hawking's example in your mind. When they can why can't you. All the best regards Sunita

HEARING AIDS KNOWLEDGE BANK

Perhaps you've thought about getting a hearing aid, but you're worried about how it will look or whether it will really help. It may help ease your concerns to know more about:
- The hearing aid options available to you
- What to look for when buying a hearing aid
- How to get used to it
- Hearing aids can't restore normal hearing. They can improve your hearing by amplifying soft sounds, helping you hear sounds that you've had trouble hearing.

How hearing aids work

Hearing aids use the same basic parts to carry sounds from the environment into your ear and make them louder. Most hearing aids are digital, and all are powered with a hearing aid battery.

Small microphones collect sounds from the environment. A computer chip with an amplifier converts the incoming sound into digital code. It analyzes and adjusts the sound based on your hearing loss, listening needs and the level of the sounds around you. The amplified signals are then converted back into sound waves and delivered to your ears through speakers.

Hearing aid styles

Hearing aids vary a great deal in price, size, special features and the way they're placed in your ear.

The following are common hearing aid styles, beginning with the smallest, least visible in the ear. Hearing aid designers keep making smaller hearing aids to meet the demand for a hearing aid that is not very noticeable. But the smaller aids may not have the power to give you the improved hearing you may expect.

Completely in the canal (CIC) or mini CIC

A completely-in-the-canal hearing aid is molded to fit inside your ear canal. It improves mild to moderate hearing loss in adults.

A completely-in-the-canal hearing aid:
- Is the smallest and least visible type
- Is less likely to pick up wind noise
- Uses very small batteries, which have shorter life and can be difficult to handle
- Doesn't contain extra features, such as volume control or a directional microphone
- Is susceptible to earwax clogging the speaker

In the canal

An in-the-canal (itc) hearing aid is custom molded and fits partly in the ear canal. This style can improve mild to moderate hearing loss in adults.

An in-the-canal hearing aid:
- Is less visible in the ear than larger styles
- Includes features that won't fit on completely-in-the-canal aids, but may be difficult to adjust due to its small size
- Is susceptible to earwax clogging the speaker

In the ear
An in-the-ear (ITE) hearing aid is custom-made in two styles — one that fills most of the bowl-shaped area of your outer ear (full shell) and one that fills only the lower part (half shell). Both are helpful for people with mild to severe hearing loss.

An in-the-ear hearing aid:
- Includes features that don't fit on smaller style hearing aids, such as a volume control
- May be easier to handle
- Uses a larger battery for longer battery life
- Is susceptible to earwax clogging the speaker
- May pick up more wind noise than smaller devices
- Is more visible in the ear than smaller devices

Behind the ear
A behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid hooks over the top of your ear and rests behind the ear. A tube connects the hearing aid to a custom earpiece called an earmold that fits in your ear canal. This type is appropriate for people of all ages and those with almost any type of hearing loss.

A behind-the-ear hearing aid:
- Traditionally has been the largest type of hearing aid, though some newer mini designs are streamlined and barely visible
- Is capable of more amplification than are other styles
- May pick up more wind noise than other styles

Receiver in canal or receiver in the ear
The receiver-in-canal (RIC) and receiver-in-the-ear (RITE) styles are similar to a behind-the-ear hearing aid with the speaker or receiver in the canal or in the ear. A tiny wire, rather than tubing, connects the pieces.

A receiver-in-canal hearing aid:
- Has a less visible behind-the-ear portion
- Is susceptible to earwax clogging the speaker

Open fit
An open-fit hearing aid is a variation of the behind-the-ear hearing aid with a thin tube. This style keeps the ear canal very open, allowing for low-frequency sounds to enter the ear naturally and for high-frequency sounds to be amplified through the hearing aid. This makes the style a good choice for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.

An open-fit hearing aid:
- Is less visible
- Doesn't plug the ear like the small in-the-canal hearing aids do, making your own voice sound better to you
- May be more difficult to handle and adjust due to small parts.

I want to know hearing song in headphone in low volume for 2 to 3 hr. continually is effective for hearing very much.

Master of Hospital Administration, Bachelor of Audiology & Speech Language Pathology (B.A.S.L.P)

Better you play that song in your mobile, keep that on the table. Using headphone has an adverse effect on hearing moreover it may irritate the skin. So from both point of view you better go for hearing it frm far away from your earcanal.
