4 Symptoms Of Shoulder Impingement And Its Treatment!

Shoulder impingement occurs when there is impingement or change in the position of the tendons or a bursa (fluid filled sac or cavity, which causes friction in the joints) in your shoulder. Repeated overhead exercises or intense physical activity concentrated around your shoulder is a common risk factor for shoulder impingement. The examples of such activity would include playing outdoor sports like tennis, swimming etc. or painting for long hours.

How it may affect your daily life?

Shoulder impingement pain is severe in many cases and may affect your everyday activities. In fact, any activity, which involves your shoulders can cause intense pain. You should consult a doctor or a professional medical facility to get relief from pain as well as to avoid aggravating the injury.

Symptoms of shoulder impingement:

  1. You will have difficulty in completing tasks which involve your back.
  2. There may be a weakness in your shoulder muscles.
  3. Pain associated with overhead use of your arm. Anytime you lift your arm there would be pain and would make many day to day activities difficult.
  4. Intense injury to the tendons can cause them to tear into two and would result in a rotator cuff injury and would make your arm movements next to impossible.

Diagnosis of shoulder impingement:

Physical exam and review of medical injury previously sustained on some other occasion is the first step of treatment. Your doctor may also diagnose shoulder impingement by X-rays or MRI of shoulder to see changes in the bone that may indicate any injury. Other changes in the normal contour of the bone may also be checked which may help in further diagnosis and treatment.

Treatment of shoulder impingement:

NSAIDs are anti-inflammatory medicines that are commonly prescribed for shoulder impingement syndrome. These are prescribed for two weeks. Shoulder impingement requires a long time to heal and would require regular consultation with your doctor. If the medications fail to provide any relief in a span of maximum two weeks it may compel your doctor to change the course of treatment. Shoulder impingement is a serious injury and requires proper rest for your shoulder as well as patience as it may take quite some time to come back to normal.

Physiotherapy for Impingement:

Physiotherapy is usually the first line of treatment for subacromial impingement (tendonitis, bursitis) of the shoulder; along with anti-inflammatories and analgesia. It is very successful in treating shoulder impingement syndrome. You will work with your physical therapist to devise a treatment plan that is specific to your condition and goals. Your individual treatment program may include:

  1. Pain Management
  2. Manual techniques, such as gentle joint movements, soft-tissue massage, and shoulder stretches to get your shoulder moving properly.
  3. You will learn exercises and stretches to help your shoulder and shoulder blade move properly.
  4. Strengthening Exercises
  5. The therapist will teach you the proper posture which is an important part of rehabilitation

When Is Surgery Required?

Recalcitrant cases of shoulder impingement require surgery. If the symptoms do not improve over a period of time with medicines and physio or if it deteriorates patient might need a surgery. The surgery which is done usually is an arthroscopic ( keyhole ) surgery in which the structure causing impingement is debulked and a space is created for the structures to move freely. This surgery usually gives significant pain relief and cure.

Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

This is d alarming sign. Take some rest, stop any kind of forward bending activities, do not delay to move to your near by physio for d proper assessment and treatment.

Hello lybrate user according to Ayurveda Vata vikriti is the main factor for pain.... Treatment- 1-apply prasarini oil or pranacharya restopain oil on your affected part and give hot water fomentation . 2-take yograj guggul and agni tundi vati after lunch and dinner with warm water. 3-Take maha rasnadi kwath 2-2 tsf twice a day. 4-Take pranacharya vatari capsule and syrup twice a day.. Diet- Avoid fermented food...Junk food....potato rice....sleep well...

How to avoid sleeping neck pain? i'll not use pillow and i sleep on ground. please tell.?

Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Use no pillow under the head. Kindly take biod3 max 1 tab dailyx10 paracetamol 250mg od & sos x5days do back (spine)/shoulder/knee exercises make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take do not ignore it. It may have to be further investigated. It could be beginning of a serious problem. If no relief in 4_5 days, then contact me again. Contact your family doctor or nearest hospital for emergency help.

In avoid exercise at that time tk relaxation treatment so do physiotherapy treatment for few days after this automatic you can do all spine extension exercise easily.

Hi Doctor, I am 32 year female, I started doing walking while going and coming to office and generally wear heels, but now I am getting unbearable pain on my right leg under toe area and ankle, can you please advise what would be the problem for this pain.

Long walks with with high heel shoes can cause severe pain in foot & ankle. Pain in heels is a common condition rule out diabetes & vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Do hot fomentation keep a pillow under the legs at night &/when resting. Any way take take multivitamins & other antioxidants along with. Ibuprofen 200mg od & sos x 5days you will need other supportive medicines also. Do ankle/foot & toe exercises it may have to be further investigated make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take. Do reply back for private consultation and detailed treatment plan.

The cause of stomach pain and back pain should be investigated first. Stomache pain could be due to consumed food, intestinal infection or muscular spasm. Back pain could be arthritis, spondylosis, ivg reduction etc or simply exhaustion too. There could be other causes too. Primarily you may take ajwain boiled with 1/2 gm of purest hing fried in ghee and powdered. It works in both. Upon further information, proper treatment could be initiated, if needed.

Please get treated for bladder stone. Now this can be done endoscopically. Weight gain can be done by balanced diet. Anything being absorbed by body or not depends upon whether rught nutrition is reaching in your diet or not. Green leafy vegetables and fruits may not provide calories but they do provide all essential nutrients which will lead to complete nutrition and weight gain.

For leg pain, please follow the below advise: keep your leg raised while sitting or lying quadriceps strengthening exercises- quad clenches: lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Short arcs: lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day.

1) do massage with warm sesame oil or suitable oil for 15 min. Afterwards take hot fomentation for 10 min. 2) start natural calcium supplement. 3) do regular stretching exercise 4) in yoga do bhujangasan, halasan & suryanamaskar. Life-style correction 1) correct your sitting posture. 2) take small pillow or back rest for lower back. 3) foot should rest to floor easily. 4) take small break after 1 hr & walk few steps. 5) do neck & upper back extension, give feedback after 4 days.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. This pain could be due to certain degenerative changes in your shoulder joint or its associated structures, or could be just muscular in nature. If there is no history of any injury, or any s/s of inflammation or infection like swelling, skin redness or local warmth etc, I will advise you initially to do: - ice packs at home 3-4 times in a day - gentle anti inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or tab paracetamol can be taken for 5-7 days or as sos basis - physical therapy with tens or laser under supervision of a physical therapist - analgesic spray like dynapar qps spray for local application - adequate calcium and vitamin d intake as per requirement. Let me know in 2-3 weeks time how you are feeling, otherwise we will get some investigations done for you. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.
