Dear Lybrate user, Negative self talk is usually due to anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are a category of mental disorders characterized by feelings of anxiety and fear, where anxiety is a worry about future events and fear is a reaction to current events. These feelings may cause physical symptoms, such as a racing heart and shakiness. There are a number of anxiety disorders: including generalized anxiety disorder, a specific phobia, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, and panic disorder among others. While each has its own characteristics and symptoms, they all include symptoms of anxiety. I need to know more about your anxiety so that I will be able to diagnose it properly and provide you tips to overcome and manage your anxiety. Take care.

Hi I am newly married boy. It's arranged marriage. After 2 months later of my marriage my wife disclose me her four yera relationship with a boy but there was no physical relationship made during that period. After that I am in depression,. I am very confused, and feel that I made a mistake after marriage of this type of girl. What should I do tell me I am taking pills for sleep. Problem of headache occur. Please tell what should I do?

M.Sc - Applied Psychology
Psychologist, Bangalore
Hi. You are feeling distressed, betrayed and thinking too much. Look at the other side. Your wife put in so much trust on you that she opened her heart to you by telling honestly about her life before marriage. She had all the options not to say anything but she chose to share a very personal part of her life with you. You may have difficulty digesting it, but if you see her faith in you then probably your anger may reduce. What she did before marriage has nothing to do with today. Anybody can have a relationship that may not have worked for them and so they move on. She has moved on too. Taking her past and judging her for it is not going to help you in anyway. Instead of brooding over something that has happened before and not at all related to your present, it will be appropriate if you can build a healthy relationship with her now. She is a human being, just like you, with feelings. So give her your love, which is her right and lead a fulfilling life. Past is past. All that you have now is your present, so live it to the fullest. If you are unable to make peace with yourself then do consult a counsellor to explore your value and belief systems.

Sir what are the problems we should face if we suddenly stop smoking? Also how to avoid smoking?

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology
Psychologist, Palakkad
Dear lybrate-user, you are just 20. You will not face any withdrawal symptoms or health consequences on suddenly leaving smoking. Quitting addictive substances is not an easytask. You can go for deaddiction therapy. But according to me, the best method would be, you quit the habbit now itself. Sustain the quitting with the help of self motivation. I suggest counseling and psychotherapy. Please consult a psychologist. Take care.

I feel very depressed and lonely. I think on any topi or the things happened to me allot. Sometime I feel to suicide....
When you take any medicine it leads to some other problems. Better to control yourself. Your loneliness is the main enemy it caused depressive thoughts. Do not think about suicidal aspects. If you think like that your thoughts may also come like that. If anything happen better to express others. Whether it is good or bad. Better to share with others. Better to maintain close relations with friends and family members. Do not be alone. Do not sit one place. Visit other places. Better to develop busy work schedules. Concentrate on your work. Plan about good career. Better to imagine good future. Feel always happy and be friendly with others. Be sociable and feel always comfortable. Think always positive matters. Feel always be a good person.

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. At your age, memory problems like amnesia, dementia etc are not possible. Don't worry. The present lack of memory could be due to busy and stressed life style. I need to conduct a memory test to determine the problem. Take care.

I forget the things and don't remember it, what should I do to improve my memory.

Master in Clinical Psychology, Ph. D. in Psychology

First of all you must start to give positive instructions to your mind that your memory is good or strong, and whenever you forget the things while doing something and that stuck your mind so rather than give up go step by step back to your mind what were you actually doing and what for I m here to do. And this practice will improve your memory power.

My friend have depression problem due to his break up with his girlfriend. Please tell me how can I help you?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

My friend have depression problem due to his break up with his girlfriend. Please tell me how can I help you?
It looks like you he is pining for her after the break up. You could help him analyze why they had this fallout? If it his fault, then he needs to apologize and see if she is amenable. If not he may have done something quite unforgiveable. In any relationship there must be love, respect, commitment, honesty, trust, and freedom in the romantic scene. Now whatever went wrong and if it cannot be helped, then he has to leave all this far behind. Good friends like you can make a huge difference by distracting him, making him feel worthy, lovable and above all to not become too negative and become suicidal. If you see that he has serious problems about the break up please take him to a counselor and make sure that he follows that person’s advice. Help him remove all associations of hers: gifts, notes, letters, cards, emails, and any reminders to get her out of his system, not mind. Help him keep the good memories but don’t indulge in them. Get back to his old pals and revive those contacts. Normally when we get a girl friend, we drop all our friends and live exclusively with her. This is not a good thing to do, generally. So do help him to get back with them and get into good social circles. They will help him get over her. Do not talk ill or malign his ex to his friends or to him, whatever was the reason. That is unfortunately a very bad habit many of us have – we must still respect her reputation and treat her with dignity. Since this beak up is so serious for him, do meet up with a counselor and talk about his feelings, openly. This is not the end of the world and she is not the only girl in life. He will find another but teach him not to repeat the mistakes that led to the breakup. This time he needs to choose wisely and behave like a true gentleman. You must help him do that and improve his self-belief.

Im addicted to smoke weed? And now I wanna quite with smoking immediately. So what should I do?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Stopping weed is like any other habit like smoking and has to be done immediately, promptly, and abruptly. When quitting, you must take one day at a time. If you look too far ahead you will get discouraged and will give up. If you sit and count the number of days you have given up, that will also focus too much on achievement. You must focus on the here and now, on that day to be precise. After all quitting is not that easy due to many factors. So even if you fail one day, you must try and try again. Very few people succeed in their first attempt. Your persistence will eventually pay off. The urge to discontinue is hampered by many factors but the worst of them is the conditioning and the high you get from the weed. In fact these conditions can exist all through the day unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important factor. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking weed to have a reason that alarms you about continuing in the habit. The information is really scary but true and you must remind yourself about this every day. Though there are contravening information percolating from researchers of various kinds expounding about its benefits. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chewing gum. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation, even though you are into weed. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers of weed and cigarettes for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here?s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a refill, it is not the end of the world ? you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.

Hi there, I am very glad for your question Therapy for anxiety / depressive disorders Anxiety disorders respond very well to therapy—and often in a relatively short amount of time. The following types of therapy can help with issues such as panic attacks, generalized anxiety, and phobias. Cognitive-behavior therapy focuses on thoughts—or cognitions—in addition to behaviors. In anxiety treatment, cognitive-behavioral therapy helps you identify and challenge the negative thinking patterns and irrational beliefs that fuel your anxiety. Exposure therapy for anxiety disorder treatment encourages you to confront your fears in a safe, controlled environment. Through repeated exposures to the feared object or situation, either in your imagination or in reality, you gain a greater sense of control. As you face your fear without being harmed, your anxiety gradually diminishes. Cognitive-behavioral therapy and exposure therapy are types of behavioral therapy, meaning they focus on behavior rather than on underlying psychological conflicts or issues from the past. If therapy isn’t working… If you’ve been in therapy for awhile and aren’t making progress, consider whether a more complex emotional issue is behind your anxiety. Anxiety is a common symptom of trauma, which requires a different treatment approach. Medication for anxiety disorders If you have anxiety that’s severe enough to interfere with your ability to function, medication may help relieve your symptoms. However, anxiety medications can be habit forming and cause unwanted side effects, so be sure to research your options. Many people use anti-anxiety medication when therapy, exercise, or self-help strategies would work just as well or better—minus the side effects and safety concerns. It’s important to weigh the benefits and risks of anxiety medication so you can make an informed decision. I hope this helps. I wish you a very quick and speedy recovery. Sincerely,

There is a girl she love me a lot but I don't her even I don't want to with her tell how can I convince her to leave me. And finish this relationship.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

However much it may hurt her you have to honest with her without being rude. Tell her that your parents are looking for another girl from your community and that you cannot be with her at all. If you are definite and clear, she will get the message and move on. Any slightest indication that there is some possibility, she will live on that hope and continue to nurture her feelings for you.

I can not concentrate on studies. Once I studied I can remember that for 1or 2 days. Give me some tips.

General Physician,
10 Study Tips to Improve Your Learning Study Tip 1: Underlining Underlining is one of the simplest and best known study tips. It’s easy to highlight the most significant parts of what you’re reading. One key sentence per paragraph and a few important phrases here and there. You can only retain a certain amount so it’s best to retain the most important information. Study Tip 2: Make your own note and taking notes is one of the most widespread study skills out there. Essentially the aim of note-taking is to summarise lectures or articles in your own words so you can easily remember the ideas. Study Tip 3: Mind mapping A good Mind map can save you many hours of study and further consolidate your knowledge for your exams. Mind Maps are an extremely versatile tools. They can be used for brainstorming, outlining essays or study topics and for general exam preparation, ExamTime offers the ability to create Mind Maps quickly and easily which makes them the ideal tool when it comes to exams. Study Tip 4: Flash cards:- Using these are a particularly effective method of learning when trying to assimilate different facts, dates, formulas or vocabulary. Subjects such as History, Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Geography or any language are made much easier if you incorporate Flashcards in to your study. Study Tip 5: Case Studies Sometimes it can be difficult to grasp the implications of some theories. This is where studying case studies can be a big help. Case studies can help you visualise a theory and place it in a more familiar and realistic context. This is especially useful in business or law subjects. Study Tip 6: Quizzes are an excellent way to review study notes in the weeks and days before an exam. Quizzes can show where your strengths and weaknesses are, so it allows you to focus your efforts more precisely. Moreover, if you share your Study Quiz with your classmates and test each other as much as possible you can discover even more details and areas you may have overlooked. So before any exam, make sure you create and share a bunch of different Quizzes with your Friends. Study Tip 7: Brainstorming This is another study technique that is ideal for studying with friends and/or classmates. Brainstorming is a great way to expand every possible idea out of any topic. Just get a bunch of friends together and shoot the breeze, there are no wrong answers when brainstorming – just talk and capture the ideas, you can review afterward. Study Tip 8: Mnemonic Rules Mnemonics are especially useful when memorising lists and sets. Mnemonics rules basically work by associating certain concepts with other concepts that are more familiar to us. There are many different ways to make mnemonics and these can be individual to the person. Study Tip 9: ORGANISE your study One of the most effective study skills is also one of the most often overlooked; this is organising your study. Creating a TIME TABLE gives you goals and a time in which to achieve them. Having a study timetable as you study is greatly motivational Study Tip 10: Drawing Many people find it easier to recall images rather than text that is why they are better able to memorise concepts if they associate them with pictures or drawings. Let everything be so. Do not take any step further in your love affair. If you achieve something in your career life, in other words, if you prepare yourself to stand on your own, she will automatically come to you. Explain her about your career goal, and to maintain your relationship intact until then. She will really be impressed by you.

The problem is kinda complicated and I shall try my best to explain in as simple a manner as possible. So basically there is this girl I really love and we have been talking to each other since about 3 weeks. I know 3 weeks sounds like a less time but in this time frame we have shared quite a lot about each other. Even the things that 2 opposite sex friends would not normally share with each other like family past, sexual/masturbation tendencies, about our ex girlfriends/boyfriends etc. Like we both are open minded enough to discuss these things really normally. After like 2 weeks, I confessed to her that I love her and she just told me to wait due to her recent breakup and other trust issues with regards to relationships such as being commitment phobic as she claims to be sometimes. But at the same time she tells me not to loose contact with her at any point of time and maybe after sometime she might say yes. At times she also flirts with me calling me cute and all and she dosen't mind me flirting with her as well. She would not even mind getting drunk with me at my house even though she has not done with any other guy. Not even with her exes. Now comes my question. I tend to contemplate that all these chain of events that took place between us is a sign of the fact that she probably likes me as well. However its kind of making me mad as to why is she stalling this whole thing so much despite of such good bonding between us. Is she playing games with me? Does she has any plans to screw around with me as if i'm just a time pass? Would we ever fall into a committed relationship? I really do not know whats going on here. And on top of that I get confused hearing my friends say that I am not taking the right approach with her. They suggest me tactics like unusual questions and ego games in order to make her like me. But I never wanna do these things to get her. I just wanna be myself. The truthful honest self. So please give some advice here as to how to go about it and how to tackle the anxieties and depression that come forth when I am missing her when she is busy. Thank you so much for reading till here.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Bardhaman
Hello, thank you for elaborating your case here. I would like to advice you to be yourself althrough the way. As you are since for two people to stay together for long, staying like oneself is indeed crucial. For the matter that though you feel she likes you but is not telling you 'yes' for your proposal, I would like to tell you that its perfectly normal at this juncture for her when she just had a rusty ride with her ex. Just give her some time to revive all that she had with her ex. She is now also in a tumultous phase of her life and shr has found you who has lend her a soothing shoulder. To caress her. My last words would be. Give your relationship some time. Concentrate on your studies. Let your relationship with her follow its usual course. Regards.

Nicotine dependence is a very troublesome problem among youngsters today. The fact that you are unable to quit smoking and that you had multiple failed attempts goes to suggest that you certainly face withdrawal symptoms due to nicotine use. You might need a detailed evaluation of these symptoms and target oriented medications.
