The situation needs detailed discussion. Valproate can cause problems with development of the baby. But not always valproate will cause problems. On the other hand uncontrolled epilepsy is more dangerous for you and your baby. Majority of the valproate related problems can be diagnosed in ultrasound. But some problems can develop at relatively late age of the baby. Please start folic acid and discuss the issue in a meeting with neurologist, gynaecologist and your family being present.
