The biggest risk factor for developing diabetes is being overweight, but not all body fat is created equal. Your risk is higher if you tend to carry your weight around your abdomen?the so-called ?spare tire??as opposed to your hips and thighs. So why are ?apple? shaped people more at risk than ?pears??
?Pears? store most of their fat close below the skin. ?Apples? store their weight around their middle, much of it deep within the belly surrounding their abdominal organs and liver. This type...more

Mr. lybrate-user, thanks for the query.
Diabetes mellitus T2, is a disease which does run in the family. But it can be prevented by adapting a modifies healthy lifestyle. That is keeping fit, weight under control, BMI < 23 kgs/M2, taking healthy diet and doing regular exercise. It is better to avoid eating sweets, deep fried foods, sugary drinks and junk foods. Taking "sugar free" tablets as a substitute for sugar is also not very good. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query.
When product label says sugar free it means there is no Sucrose which is cane sugar, is not present in it.
This to make people use that product as many people do not want to consume extra sugar. Taking more sugar is not really healthy. However, one has to understand that majority of the food eaten by us (Indians, Asians) is containing about 60 to 70 % carbohydrates. All these are converted to glucose after digestion. So even if one does not take ex...more

Mr. Lybrate-user, if you have diabetes then taking direct sugar is really not good. Because direct sugar increases blood sugar levels almost immediately. Persistent hyperglycemia is not good as it affects all the vital organs like eyes (retina), kidneys, nerve fibers, small and large blood vessels, coronary arteries and lower limbs. Your fasting should be around 100 mg, pp should be 150 to 160 mg /100 ml. Hba1c% <6.8. If you maintain sugar levels as mentioned then can consume about 100 g of frui...more

If you feel happy with it then its alright but I want to inform you certain things about use of sugar free.
It is said that it may be responsible for cancer,it increases craving for sugar and sweets,it may cause palpitation, weight gain, anxiety etc.
My advise is, if you got a disease which requires to avoid sugar and sweets then it is better to enjoy life without them.

Type 1 diabetes can be absent in the family. It usually gets diagnosed during an episode of illness like fever etc.
Start diet therapy and exercise.
Test serum c-peptide. If it comes out to be low, then she may be requiring lifelong insulin therapy.
It may sound very shocking to you, but I assure you it is manageable and there is absolutely no complication of long term insulin therapy.
But first test fasting and 2 hour post meal blood glucose, hba1c and c peptide.
You can con...more
