Over-the-counter (otc) cold preparations won't cure a common cold or make it go away any sooner, and most have side effects. Cough suppressants, like dextromethorphan, can provide relief for a short time. They work on the part of your brain that controls the process.
Expectorants, like guaifenesin, can break up congestion in your chest by thinning the mucus in your airways. This way, when you do cough, you can get rid of phlegm more easily.

This probably is not the side effect of the medicine. But anyways once you have doubt better stop the medicine use. Keep checking if the child still behaves abnormally even in the absence of medicine.

The benefits of honey over dextromethorphan were small, parents rated honey most favorably of all three interventions. To use honey to treat a cough, mix 2 teaspoons (tsp) with warm water or an herbal tea. Drink this mixture once or twice a day.

1. Do a complete blood examination like cbc, esr, mantoux test, x ray chest, sputum examination for afb.
2. Consult chest physician with report.
3. If all reports are normal it could be due to allergy. Do an allergy test after consulting allergist/immunologist and follow the advice and treatment
4. Do warm saline gurgling 3-4 times daily,
5. Avoid smoking if you smoke.
6. Consult me for further advice.
