Do you have an extremely low reading of thyroxine or T4, it means that you are suffering from an under active thyroid disease called hypothyroidism. With this condition, your thyroid glands fail to make sufficient thyroid hormones. The thyroid gland releases hormones, which travel all over your bloodstream and affect all parts of the body. Thyroid controls how the cells of the body use energy from food via the metabolism process, which in turn affects the body s temperature, heartbeat and burnin...more

What is Thyroxine?
Thyroxine, also known as T4, is the main hormone which is secreted by the thyroid gland into the bloodstream. Although it is an inactive form, most of it is converted to an active form called triiodothyronine by organs such as the liver and kidneys. The hypothalamus in the brain along with the pituitary and thyroid glands modulate the production and release of thyroid hormones.

Starting thyroid supplements depends on various factors. Do you have any symptoms of hypothyroidism like weight gain, generalised weakness, hair fall, lethargy or irregular periods. Are you planning any pregnancy in near future. Depending on these factors, we would suggest future dosage.

Dear lybrate-user,
it is very common for patients with hypothyroidism to forget medicines on 2-3 days a month. I feel this may be the reason why your recent tsh has gone up to9. 25. Make sure you take the tablet every single day on an empty stomach. You can keep it in the bathroom shelf so that you can take it as soon as you brush your teeth. In case you forget on an occasional day, take it anyway when you remember later in the day. If you forget for a whole day take the extra dose the next ...more

Hello, Thanks for the query.
TSH 11.3 mU/L is too high. When one is on treatment with adequate dosage of levothyroxine, TSH should be maintained around 3 to 4 mU/L. Then all the symptoms related to hypothyroidism are in complete check. So you will have to increase the dosage by 12.5 mcg to (50 + 12.5 = 62.5 mcg) to 62.5 mcg per day. Plus I am sure you are aware that thyroxine tablets have to be taken on empty stomach early morning and then nothing should be taken for at least 1 to 1.and half...more

Thanks for the query.
When one is on treatment for Hypothyroidism with adequate dosage of Levothyroxine, then TSH is well controlled and maintained around 3 to 4 mU/L, at that level all the symptoms are in check. Since your TSh level is 6.48 mU/L, there is a need for increasing the dose of thyroxine from present level to 62.5 mcg per day. Then check the TSH after 6 to 8 weeks and values come to the above mentioned level, then same dose needs to be continued. If TSH is still higher than recom...more

Hello, Thanks for the query.
TSH 20.12 mU/L, is too high. Isaka matalab aap ka thyroxine dosage bahut kam hai. Agar pregnancy chahati hai to TSH ko <2.5 mU/L itana hi maintain karana hoga. Thanks.

Lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. When hypothyroidism is very well controlled by maintaining TSH < 2mU/L, it is quite possible to get conception. Plus throughout the gestation it is essential to maintain TSH around 2 mU/L. That will ensure proper growth of fetus and desired outcome of pregnancy. It is necessary to check TSH every 4 weeks to see if desired level is maintained. There will be a need to increase the dosage of thyroxine by 12.5 to 25 mcg once conception occurs. Thanks.
