Hypothyroidism is a hormone (thyroxine) deficiency disorder. This hormone is secreted by your thyroid gland. It is required every day for a number of vital metabolic activities and functioning of brain and intelligence. So there is a need for supplementation every day and for a lifetime. There is no cure. Do the correct basic tests for thyroid function which is six in number. If you have done only the total T4 ,total T3 and TSH the 3 tests commonly done your tests are incomplete. You are missing the autoimmune cause which should never be left out.

Lybrate-user, if you have no symptoms related to hypothyroidism and tsh levels are below 4 milli units/l, then you might reduce the dose of thyroxine to 12.5 mcg per day, then check tsh after 6 weeks, and see if that dose has been adequate in maintaining tsh level within limit. It is better not to discontinue the dose completely. Because hypothyroidism once developed is unlikely to disappear. Also check your tpo antibodies. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query.
WHen one is on treatment with adequate dose of Levothyroxine, TSH is maintained around 3 to 4mU/L. At that level all the symptoms are in check. If TSH level goes higher (as in your case), it suggests that your thyroxine dose is not enough. Therefore, your doctor has suggested the additional dose of the same. Please check tSH level after 6 to 8 weeks of taking that doe, to find out if TSH has come down as mentioned above. Thanks.
