Oil Pulling - Know Utility Of It!

Oil Pulling - Know Utility Of It!

Oil pulling includes gargling oil around the mouth like a mouthwash. During oil pull you put a tablespoon of oil in your mouth and then rinse it around for 15 to 20 minutes. The advantage of doing this is, it decreases the measure of unsafe bacteria in the mouth. The microscopic organisms in the mouth create a biofilm on the teeth a thin layer that they use to stick to the surface. This is what we call ‘plaque’.

Having some plaque on your teeth is only normal. Yet, when it gets out of hand, it can bring about a wide range of issues, including bad breath, yellow teeth, gum aggravation, gingivitis and cavities. The way oil pulling works is basic. When you are gargling oil around your mouth, the bacteria get stuck in it and break down in the fluid oil.

Here is a step-by-step instruction for the procedure:

  1. Add 1 or 2 teaspoons of oil in your mouth - Natural sesame oil is generally used in oil pulling. It is also okay to go with natural coconut oil.

  2. Rinse for around 20 minutes - The oil will get thicker and smooth as it blends with the saliva during this time and it should be velvety white while releasing. It will be two-fold in volume during this time because of the salivation. It can be difficult to gargle for the full 20 minutes, but it is very effective.

  3. Spit the oil into a dustbin in case you have a septic framework - Do not spit into the sink. The oil may thicken and clog the pipes. Try not to swallow the oil as it is ideally full of bacteria, poisons and discharge that are currently not in the mouth.

  4. Wash well with warm water - Warm water will clean the mouth better. Rinse a couple of times with warm water to get any residual oil out of the mouth. A few sources prescribe washing with warm saltwater.

  5. Brush well - Try to brush with a brushing blend to ensure any bacteria that still remains, is killed.

Some of the most common benefits of oil pulling are as follows:

  1. Can reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth: Streptococcus mutans is one of the principal bacteria in the mouth and a key player in plaque development and tooth decay.

  2. Can reduce plaque and gingivitis: Gingivitis is caused by the aggravation of the gums and happens when the immune system begins attacking the microbes in the plaque.

  3. Can reduce bad breath: Bad breath, also called halitosis, is caused by the scent of chemicals and gasses delivered by the bacteria in the mouth.

Oil pulling can be really effective and can combat many oral problems even before they develop.

Protecting Your Vision From Diabetes!

Protecting Your Vision From Diabetes!

Diabetes is a condition characterized by an elevated level of blood glucose due to the insufficient production of the Insulin by the Beta cells of the pancreas. The high blood glucose level can also be an outcome of the inability of the body cells to utilize or respond to the insulin produced - a condition termed as Insulin Resistance.

Today, Diabetes has become a raging problem affecting almost every second individual, irrespective of their age, sex or ethnicity. What is even worse is the fact that the metabolic disorder affects the vital body organs including the eyes. In many diabetic patients (diabetes left unmanaged and uncontrolled for long), the high blood sugar or Hyperglycemia can give rise to many eye complications such as:

  • Diabetic Retinopathy (Hyperglycemia that triggers progressive damage of the blood vessels of the retina that can eventually even lead to blindness).
  • Incidences of Cataract (a condition that causes clouding of the clear eye lenses affecting one's vision) and Glaucoma (a severe eye problem that results from the damages to the optic nerve of the eye) are on a rise in diabetic patients.

Thus, it becomes essential to carry out the preventive measure to deal with diabetes-related eye problems and associated complications.

Protecting the eyes from Diabetes -

  • Keep a check on other medical disorders: Conditions such as Hypercholesterolemia (elevated levels of blood cholesterol), high blood pressure along with diabetes, are the worst nemesis that can result in a myriad of eye disorders. Make sure the blood pressure is within the control (to avoid complications, try to maintain blood pressure below 140/80) and so is the level of bad cholesterol or LDL (Low-density lipoprotein).

  • Keep your body moving: Exercises and physical activities (morning or evening walks, jogging) can play a vital role in keeping diabetes under control, thereby shielding the eyes from problems such as cataract and glaucoma. Keeping the bodyweight within the healthy and recommended range can also work towards managing the blood glucose level.

  • Healthy dietary modifications: Diabetic patients should be careful with their choice of foods. Dark chocolates, lean meat, whole grains, fish, cinnamon, turmeric, fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, blueberries, spinach, walnuts, sweet potatoes, asparagus, apricots and apples to name a few are healthy options for a diabetic patient.

  • Smoking can spell doom for the eyes and is best avoided.

Skin Itching - How To Subdue It?

Skin Itching - How To Subdue It?

Skin irritants are everywhere. Even in your house, there is practically no place where there are no skin irritants. Laundry detergents, air fresheners and floor polishes are just a few factors that cause skin itching. The reason why this happens is because products like air fresheners and floor polishes take away essential oils and water from the skin which leads to dryness and irritation. This type of dry, itchy skin can also progress to skin conditions like eczema.

Here are some ways you can stop your skin from becoming dry and itchy:

1. Wear gloves
The ideal thing to do would be to wear soft, thin cotton gloves and only wear rubber gloves on top of that. Do not touch a bucket or sponge without it. Even if you cannot wear soft, thin cotton gloves underneath, at least wear the rubber gloves as this protects your hands from irritants.

2. Rinse after swimming
Chlorine is one of the principal causes of itchiness in your skin. It is absolutely essential that once you have finished swimming you rinse your body with water and a little soap. Even more importantly, use a moisturizer with glycerin in it, as this will keep the moisture trapped inside. Glycerin is particularly good at holding on to moisture.

3. Petroleum jelly
Petroleum jelly has been proven to reduce the chances of dry, itchy skin because it contains only one ingredient. This one-ingredient formula is especially great when it is applied to sensitive skin. The reason why one ingredient is better than a moisturizer with many chemicals is that a one ingredient formula is gentler and therefore creates a protective barrier against irritants.

4. Oatmeal baths
For this kind of treatment, grind oatmeal in a blender and then sprinkle it in your bath water. Oatmeal has an anti-inflammatory substance known as avenanthramides which decreases itching and redness of the skin.

5. Cleanliness
This is perhaps the most important tip which can be given. If you do not regularly clean your floors or wash your bed sheets in hot water than you are at high risk of getting mites and these are one of the most common irritants of your skin.

My tsh level is 49.16 I have been taking thyronorm 100 mg. What should I do to cure or reduce this?

My tsh level is 49.16 I have been taking thyronorm 100 mg.
What should I do to cure or reduce this?
Tsh 49.16 mu/l is too high. Since you are on 100 mcg of levothyroxine per day, tsh should come down. It is not clear when the treatment was started and the tsh level mentioned is after the treatment or before starting it. Please clarify. Usually after taking advised treatment for 6 weeks one has to check tsh level to see whether level has come down to the expected number (3 to 4 mu/l). Thanks.

Bronchitis - Know Forms Of It!

Bronchitis - Know Forms Of It!

If you are having a chronic cough and often pant for breath, it is quite possible that you may be suffering from bronchitis. In addition to this, you may also experience wheezing, fatigue, and pain in the chest. It is triggered when the lining of the airways in the lungs become irritated. To determine, whether or not bronchitis is contagious, it is important to understand what caused the ailment.

  1. Chronic bronchitis: This type of bronchitis happens when the airways get continuously irritated. It may last for months or even years and tend to come back. It is caused by irritants that affect the lungs such as dust, chemicals, smoke, fire, and smoking cigarettes. Even though chronic bronchitis is not considered contagious, it is a serious health issue that requires medical attention.
  2. Acute bronchitis: It generally lasts for about 1 to 3 weeks and stems from cold or flu virus. As these infections are contagious, so is acute bronchitis.

Whether a person having bronchitis can spread the disease depends on the virus that is causing the ailment. In most instances, it is seen that the disease is contagious for the first few weeks of infection. Since there are hundreds of viruses causing bronchitis, it is best to assume that a person is bound to spread the disease when he has symptoms of cold and flu.

What causes transmission of bronchitis?
Acute bronchitis owing to infection is generally transmitted via an airborne droplet containing germs. It is transmitted when someone having infection shakes hand or sneezes or coughs or has any other physical contact. Some virus and bacteria have the power to live outside the body for a prolonged span of time, and therefore, you can get infected by touching an object that is harbouring the germs.

It is often seen that acute bronchitis begins as flu and therefore, the best way to prevent it is to get an annual shot of flu. When you come in contact with an infected person, the chances of being affected is high if you have chronic infections or weak immune system. Aged people and young children are most vulnerable to this disease.

How can acute bronchitis be prevented?
Even though acute bronchitis is extremely common and can occur at any time, winter is the most vulnerable season for bronchitis. But there are ways in which you can prevent bronchitis effortlessly. You should avoid close contact and sharing of utensils with an infected person who has flu, cold or bronchitis. You should not touch a used tissue since the virus of bronchitis can easily spread through mucus. Make sure that you get the annual flu shot and wash your hands in warm water.

The disease is very common, and it can make you feel very uncomfortable at times. But there are times when the symptoms subside on their own without any sort of medical attention.

Cut a large lemon in half. Squeeze out some of the juice from both halves so that you have two hollow halves or "cups. Apply this on joint. You can rub away any excess pulp, but don't wash your for about 3 hours. Wash off the lemon juice with some warm water. Repeat this every day until the dark skin begins to fade.
