Dear lybrate user, 'antipsychotic' is an umbrella term which covers a large number of symptoms that are common in many psychiatric problems. Hence, doctors prescribe these drugs. Just like salt can be used for many food items, a particular medicine can be used to treat many medical conditions. Stick to your doctor's prescription without any hesitation.

Schizophrenia is a very complex and difficult disease to treat, even with medication. All psychotropic medicines have side-effects: that is inescapable. But I suspect that you are depending entirely on medication when in reality you need to combine it with counseling or therapy to improve cognitive skills. In therapy you will learn a lot of coping mechanisms and techniques to remain functional and lead a close-to-normal life. You will also learn about emotions and how they can impact your condit...more

I really wonder why are you on so many medication for a single problem. If you are having only depression, then you should be on one medication but in good doses.

Good morning,
We now have medications that do not have the same side effects of the medication for schizophrenia that you mention. I believe you brother needs to switch either gradually from the medication that he is currently on to a more benign although potent medication. An expert psychiatrist is who you need to consult. I believe this can be done online since a change in medications can be monitored for tolerability and effects as usual since you already have experience with the medicat...more

Mostly, people with psychosis need to be on the medication for lifelong.
Since you have consulted a doctor, please follow his advice. You are seeing the difference with the medicines prescribed by him. Your cousin is feeling better because of the medication only. Please do not stop the medication without the doctor's advice.
The doctor must have taken the complete medical and family history of your cousin and only after that must have prescribed the medicines. Have faith in him. If you d...more

Dear Yubaraj,
Your wife may be having psychotic symptoms also along with depression. Amitriptyline and clonazepam have side effect of sedation. However she is taking rest and getting up for food and toilet. She would have got used to these drugs in 2 days. Now you can give risperidone also. Risperidone does not come as 5. Maybe it is 0.5.
However discuss with your doctor about drowsiness without stopping the drug. You should weigh whether drowsiness is worse or her symptoms are worse.
