Hello Lybrate-User,
It is nice of you to think about your brother's behaviour. He may be suffering from a psychosis with no insight into his condition. In such psychosis, the person does not want medicines. Treating him without his consent, can be discussed with the psychiatrist. There are many ways to get him into treatment. There are dispersible tablets, liquids and long acting injectables of risperidone available.

Consult the treating Psychiatrist before doing anything as not tablets retain their bioavailability after being crushed. The amount of medication available within the body may reduce if it is crushed and mixed with food items. Consult the treating Psychiatrist for alternative medication which is orodispersible or mixes with food.

Some patients require Trihexyphenidyl some do not. Its better that you discuss its need with your treating Psychiatrist. As far as lifetime treatment goes your treating Doctor must be knowing your course of illness in past 20 years and so it's best that you go with his advice regarding the type of medicine as well as the dose.

You can take both based on your psychiatrist advise only and not on your own as it can be dangerous and needs blood count monitoring too. All the best.

Antipsychotic medications including Resperidone are prescribed after detailed evaluation & should be continued under supervision of a doctor. It is one of the drugs used to treat Psychosis. I believe your mother is continuing this medicine under regular medical supervision. As she is 72 years old now, she also requires regular check up to rule out other physical illnesses along with mental status evaluation from time to time.
