This is not an interpretation, rather this is a statement of scientific facts or article.
The erythropoietin test measures the amount of a hormone called erythropoietin (epo) in blood. The hormone tells stem cells in the bone marrow to make more red blood cells. Epo is made by cells in the kidney. These cells release more epo when the blood oxygen level is low.
Like in chronic renal failure, anephric individuals, polycythemia vera.
The levels of epo vary in different times of the (ca...more

Sir / Madam, My brother 56 years, He is a diabetic and under guidance and supervision of Dr. Dinesh Neopane, MBBS, MD at Biratnagar (Nepal. However, from past one and half year it is observed that his hemoglobin count gets reduced drastically in short span of time. This issue though has been addressed but we would like to get an expert opinion for better solution. At earlier stage doctor did assumed that it could be due to piles problem and with few units of blood transfusion patient was better. This result though was short lived and after five months again blood transfusion was done. On the recommendation of consulting doctor we met Nephrologist and his views were in sync with family doctor and advice was to continue the same medicine. Later, the patients started feeling week and under consultation of the doctor an injection EPOFIT (erythropoietin) was used twice weekly for six weeks. At that period the patient's hemoglobin count was below 6. Currently report shows that prescribed injection is working fine and patients has show improvement but we family members would like to take an expert review at your recommendation or reference is required as which doctor would be seeking appointment with. Looking forward for your early reply.

What are the results of kidney function test means urea and creatinine. You know erythropoietn is prepared by kidney and in kidney failure this substance deficit. So we have to give from outside.
You can discuss further on line.

My mom is not well from last 1 month or so. She is under medication and yesterday as per doctor advice we have do a bone marrow test. Need your help in understanding the report and the treatment if any to cure her. Bone marrow report details are peripheral blood smears: total leukocytes count is within normal limits. Differential leukocytes count shows neutrophilia predominance. Platelet count is markedly diminished. Erythrocytes are normoochromin normocytic. Anisocytosis present. Comments: bone marrow smears reveal megaloblastic and dysplastic changes, and increased storage iron. Please exclude systemic disease, and deficiency of vitamin b12 and folate, and follow up. In absence of above condition, the possibility of myelodysplastic syndrome should be considered, if cytopenia persists. Report on bone marrow: clinical history: bicytopenia with low grade fever. Cellularity: cellular marrow bits and cell trails seen. erythropoietin: a significant number of erythroblasts show megaloblastic and dysplastic changes. Myelopoiesis: myeloid maturation is mildly left shifted. Giant myeloid precursors and a few dysplastic myeloid cells seen. Myeloid-erythroid ratio: 2: 1 megakaryocytes: megakaryocytes are adequate in number. A fair number of meagkaryocytes are hyperlobulated. Plasma cells, lymphoid cells & blast cells: within normal limits haemoparasite: none seen perl's stain: stainable storage iron is increased. No ring sideroblast seen. Need your guidance and opinion.

Firstly, it has been recommended to check for vitamin b12 defficiency and other diseases if she has already. For this vitamin b12 level should be tested in blood. If these two points are okay, then she will be diagnosed as having myelodysplastic syndrome. Mds are conditions that occur when the blood forming cells in the bone marrow are abnormal. It is considered as a type of cancer. So better not to delay and start the treatment. The treatment plan consists of supportive care, drug therapy and c...more

Wepox contains erythropoietin, which is a standard medication to increase hemoglobin in dialysis patients. If you are responding to it , you can continue using it.

Hi,
Definitely reports are not OK. We call this condition as polycythemia. It needs complete evaluation with detailed history (including history of smoking), examination and some laboratory tests (such as S. Erythropoietin level).

Dear reasons are clearly known...your dad is having chronic kidney disease stage 4 or 5 depending upon creatinine clearance ..he requires dialysis urgently...low hb is part of ckd that requires treatment with erythropoietin hormones..it'll be cured then

Hi Lybrate user. The reason for anemia in dialysis as well as nondialytic CKD patients is deficiency of a hormone called erythropoietin which stimulates the formation of red blood cells and deficiency of iron. Home based remedies can only provide a liitle bit of increased iron in the patient's diet, but can not completely improve the deficiency of iron and have no effect on erythropoietin. Hence it is important in most patients on dialysis to take erythropoietin injections as well as iron supple...more

Your hemoglobin count is very high. This may clog small blood vessels and cause stroke. You need to rule out kidney disease that may raise erythropoietin. You also need to rule out OSA or sleep apnea. For detailed discussion call me after a online appointment through Lybrate.
