U should not use otrivin nasal drops bcz on long term use causes side effect in form of rebound phenomenon called rhinitis medicamentosa that means persistent nasal block for which it is used. Instead of that use flomist nasal spray twice a day for 2 weeks and steam inhalation also twice a day.

Nope no major side effect though it may cause mild nasal irritation as nasal decongestant excessive sneezing or burning sensation sometimes....

There is nothing to be scared if the Otrivin drops was used in your kids by mistake.In Fact Otrivin is used for children even though in smaller concentration.

Using otrivin (xylometazoline) if used for a long time is habit forming and staoppage results in rebound symptoms. Nasivion normally is given for acute nasal allergic or vasomotor congestion to be used in proper manner for few days only along with other medications and meaures. Using otrivin for nasal polyps is the worst thing you could do. Moreover you have done it daily for the past 4 years. Read about rebound congestion due to nasal decngestants and rhinitis medicamentosa. You need a complete sino-nasal evaluation with an allergy testing. As you have no side effects now you try to stop it and check your nose for block. Using levocet m tab will hlep in allergic block this medication provides only temporary relief. Do not use more often, use more sprays, or use longer than directed because doing so may increase the risk of side effects. Otrivin (or other topical nasal decongestant) is not a very good medicine. I know it gives immediate relief but on long term use it has side effect (rhinitis medicamentosa) leading to persistent nasal obstruction for which it is used.
