The majority of people infected with polio virus do not develop paralysis and remains healthy, however they are capable of carrying polio virus in their intestine and spreading it. The polio virus spreads through contaminated water and food, so when individuals do not have intestinal immunity, the polio virus multiplies in the gut and is excreted by the infected person.
Polio vaccination is safe for children.

Give penta 1 with OPV and then take IPV when it becomes available. IPV is in short supply but others are freely available in Mumbai. Ask in government hospitals, IPV may be available there. There is nothing optional here. These are additional vaccines, one is advised to give them to the baby if one can afford. Though bit costly they are certainly helpful to prevent the illnesses.

Opv is the who-recommended vaccine for the global eradication of polio. Each child requires just two drops per dose to be immunized against polio. Usually administered four times if the epi schedule is followed, opv is safe and effective in providing protection against the paralyzing poliovirus.
