Yes you guessed it right. It is a beta blocker which is usually used as an anti-hypertensive. But, it is a drug which decreases the sympathetic hyperdrive which is a common phenomenon in any anxiety disorder. In your case, it helps in decreasing sweating, shaking of hands, dry mouth and rapid breathing if at all you are facing such problems.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query.
Beta blockers are used quite often to control hypertension and related cardiac problems in patients with diabetes also. They are fairly safe. Some times hypoglycemic episodes may not be easily recognised. Thanks.

Dear user you can reduce your medicines and then stop slowly but first of all I need a complete case history of yours and want to guide you about your thoughts and worries so that without medicines you can enjoy your life in a better way, but without knowing everything I won’t be able to help you. If you want to get rid of over thinking and negative thoughts medicines are not enough counseling will help you in a better way. If you quit medicines with counseling there are bright chances to get ...more

I am 66 years old male.in september 2019, after thinking too much on a serious topic, I did not sleep deeply at night. Sometimes I could feel restless due to lack of sleep and I used to walk for a long time. Then I showed the psychiatrist that they gave me placida + sensival-25 and lonazep-0.5.it cured me in 30 days and then I stopped the medicine. Then I had the same problem again in february 2020, even after taking the same medicine for a few days, I recovered. On 31/5/2020, at 1: 00 pm, I suddenly got sleepy due to nervousness and I felt that I was suffocating, breathing was difficult and I would die from this suffocation. My body was shivering. Then I took placida after which I fell asleep after 1 hour. But the fear of not getting that panic attack again remains in my mind. The medicine given to me by the psychiatrist from time to time in the last 4 months is as follows. Vilano-20, vilano-40, placida, sensival, oppiprol-50, ciplar-40 but I did not get rest when I showed it to another psychiatrist. They gave me pexep cr 12.5, etilaam-0.25, provanol sr-40 but not rest. To pexcep has been changed to patruxta-25. But no relief. I sleep at 11: 00 pm. When I wake up at 7: 00 am, the nervous suffocation persists till 11: 00 am, after that I feel something right. My hunger has reduced already. Blood pressure is my normal and no other disease. I just want to know that all the medicines given to me are correct and is there any medicines that I can become addicted to that and will I have to take these medicines lifelong. Would it be right for me to do meditation pranayama yoga? Please guide.

The medicines are just temporary suppressants.. and will relieve till you take it. Also has numerous side effects..
The better solution is to take proper homoeopathic treatment.
You can consult me online.

Ciplar la is non selective beta blocker having effect on heart, lungs, blood vessels etc. And so should not be used in asthmatic patients while metoprolol succinate is a cardioselective beta blocker that can be used in patients having asthma or peripheral vascular disease. Both can be used in chest pain or angina or irregular or increased heart beats but if used together they may cause side effects (esp if in excess dose) like nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps or heart block. Metoprolol is used...more

Propranolol may be useful for a short time .What you have to do is to treat the root cause and not the symptoms. Anxiety is a lifestyle disease and does require lifestyle and diet changes and not a chemical cocktail of medicines. Modern medicine is disease focused and not whole patient focused .Have you ruled out thyroid disease what is your exact nature of your job and what is the stress level in the job and at home do you smoke what about alcohol

Hello friend, good that you are seeking a help here. Be aware that medicine are just one part of any psychic treatments like yours. It helps mostly to manage your symptoms and give temporary relief. However if you notice, the actual root cause behind your depression or anxiety is your anxious or worrying or fearful thoughts.
Until you learn to manage or control or divert such thoughts you will have to continue the medication. Be positive. Try and adopt few non medicine treatment plan like ch...more
