Mr. Lybrate-user, hashimoto's disease (ht), is an autoimmune disease where there are antibodies prepared against thyroxine secreting cells, this leads to deficiency of thyroxine hormone and hypothyroidism. There is lymphocytic infiltration of thyroid gland, it becomes firm and lobulated. There are anti bodies against thyroid peroxidase enzyme (anti tpo ab). One of the causes for ht is said to be excess iodine intake through iodinated salt. Most of the patients with ht are likely to have other au...more

Hashimoto?s thyroiditis is caused by an auto-immune process, whereby body?s own mechanism act against the thyroid cells. Analgesics can be used to get relief from pain. Iodine has no role in the management of this condition.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is caused by autoimmune response by body where body try to destroy thyroid gland and its enzyme. Anti-tpo anti atg is mostly positive or either of it. Thyroid peroxidase is enzyme needs to build t3 t4 hormones from iodine. The best way to treat is via levothyroxine supplementation. Iodine is raw material but when enzyme is destructed by autoimmune system, supplementing raw material is not of much use.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease, a disorder in which the immune system turns against the body's own tissues. In people with hashimoto's, the immune system attacks the thyroid. This can lead to hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid does not make enough hormones for the body's needs.
There is no cure for hashimoto's, but replacing hormones with medication can regulate hormone levels and restore your normal metabolism.
Yes, iodine may help.

Hi Since you are on treatment with thyroxine 125 mcg tablets, there is no need to do any separate testing. Just take iodinated salt. Since you already have hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland is not functioning optimally. So it hardly matters. All the needs of thyroxine are being met by supplement. You should ensure that TSH level is maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L. If that is not the case then dosage of thyroxine may have to be increased. Thanks.
