I've been having mild but discomforting pain in the left side of my teeth for three days that gets worse while brushing or drinking cold water. Accompanying it is a mild pain in the same left side of my brain, in the part just above my ear which gets stimulated SOMETIMES by a breeze. It doesn't happen very often and I do not have a running nose. My doctor suspects it MIGHT be Trigeminal Neuralgia. If that's what it is, do I need to be worried? Is it curable? If that's not what it is, what else might it be?

YOu may have caries teeth and need dental check up.In trigeminal neuralgia, also called tic douloureux, the trigeminal nerve's function is disrupted. Usually, the problem is contact between a normal blood vessel — in this case, an artery or a vein — and the trigeminal nerve at the base of your brain. This contact puts pressure on the nerve and causes it to malfunction. Trigeminal neuralgia can occur as a result of aging, or it can be related to multiple sclerosis or a similar disorder that damages the myelin sheath protecting certain nerves. Trigeminal neuralgia can also be caused by a tumor compressing the trigeminal nerve.

How to know if penis nerve is damaged. And is it trea...
If you have penile numbness, you may feel nothing or you may feel as if your penis is asleep. Depending on the cause, you might also experience other symptoms and sensations, such as: bluish skin. A burning feeling. The symptoms of penis nerve damage and neuropathy may differ from man to man, some symptoms are typical, and appear most often where peripheral nerves have been damaged. The 5 most common symptoms experienced by men include: Pain Burning Tingling Numbness Loss of sensitivity When the penis becomes affected by symptoms of tingling, numbness, pain, burning or loss of sensitivity, men should seek out medical attention at once. While in some cases these symptoms may be caused by physical damage to the penis, more often there is something else going on. In certain cases neuropathy is the first sign of a chronic health condition. The treatment to repair damaged penis nerves depends largely on the cause of damage. When obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes are under control, peripheral nerve damage should improve significantly. For more severe cases, improving circulation, antioxidant protection and nutrition of nerves is important. Omega-3 and 6 are required for healthy nerve function. Omega-3 oils concentrate in the brain, in the form of DHA, while omega-6 is required to form the myelin sheath that protects nerve fibers in the peripheries of the body. These essential fatty acids are also capable of thinning the blood, enhancing the easy flow of blood and oxygen to the nerves throughout the system, and reducing cholesterol. Bilberry, ginkgo and garlic may also support blood flow to the male organ nerves. Alpha lipoic acid, a vitamin-like antioxidant, has shown in studies to reduce the damage to nerves caused by prostate surgery, effectively treat symptoms of damaged penile nerves, and enhance the regeneration of nerve fibers.

My father who is 52 years of age has been diagnosed of multiple sclerosis but we do not know the basis of it and the cure for it. Can you please help?

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hello, The name multiple sclerosis refers to the multiple scars (or scleroses) on the myelin sheaths. MS results from attacks by an individual’s immune system on his or her own nervous system, and it is therefore called an autoimmune disease. The various expressions of disease can be managed effectively, gently, and safely with Homeopathy. Early intervention with homeopathy can assist in preventing further progress and hence deterioration caused by disease. A complete case history is needed for the prescription. Thank you.

What is the life span for a baby of 1 year suffering from leukodystrophy, along with other 18q syndrome anomalies?
Leukodystrophy is not a single condition, but refers to a group of conditions that mainly affect the white (? leuko?) matter of the brain and the spinal cord. The primary leukodystrophies affect myelin production or breakdown. Myelin is the substance that surrounds and insulates the nerve fibres in the nervous system. When myelin is damaged, the underlying nerve tissue cannot operate in the regular way. Leukodystrophies are usually progressive conditions, which means they get worse over time. They cause loss of normal brain functions. Life expectancy depends on the type of leukodystrophy. Treatment for leukodystrophy currently, leukodystrophies cannot be cured. Stem cell therapy and bone marrow transplantation have each been tried in some cases. However, the benefits depend on the timing, age of onset and severity of symptoms. Therapies such as gene therapy and enzyme replacement therapy are under investigation. Treatment is mainly supportive and may include: physical therapy occupational therapy psychological counselling family counselling (including genetic counselling) medications (for example, medications for seizures. Things to remember leukodystrophy refers to a group of inherited disorders that affect the white matter of the brain. It causes loss of normal brain functions. Onset of symptoms is variable. There is no cure, but supportive treatment can help manage some of the symptoms. Most children with leukodystrophy will have significant problems with walking, talking, and activities of daily living. Some children with leukodystrophy will have a progressive downhill course in their abilities and will have a shortened life span. We encourage you to discuss your child's prognosis with your provider. Because children with leukodystrophy usually have significant medical problems, the impact on the family will be significant. A support group (see below) may be extremely helpful for you and your family. No one can predict the life span. Please ask personally for more doubts.

Panchkarma Treatment for Neurological Disorder

Neurological disorders may creep in due to many reasons. It may be due to degenerative diseases, accidents, other health conditions, birth defects or genetics. The most common form of disorder occurs due to non-functional brain cells in some parts, and loss of myelin sheath in neurons, which protects the nerve signals in their complete transfer from origin to destination. These losses are irreparable, but further degeneration can be avoided with Ayurveda. Panchakarma, the branch of Ayurveda, which deals with detoxification of the body and mind, specially helps. Over a period of time, it can bring back the lost sensation in nerves. Yoga, pranayama and Ayurvedic treatments lead to recovery and relief to a huge extent.

Important facts about Panchakarma
There are 3 important steps in Panchakarma, which are followed one after another to get the result. The main objective of Panchakarma is to detoxify the body. Virechanam, vamanam, sneha vasti, nasyam and kashaya vasti are the 5 folds in Panchakarma.

  • Poorvakarma or preparing the body, followed by Abhyangam or massage, followed by Elakizhi or herbal paste massage, and finally podikizhi, or steam bathing makes the body ready for receiving further treatments.
  • Njavara Kizhi is the special treatment done in Panchakarma where the body is given a rice bolus massage to improve the joint and neuro functions.

What is Njavara Kizhi?
Njavara is a variety of rice, which is specially used for Ayurvedic treatment and massages. In this treatment the rice is made into a pudding by boiling it with milk. This pudding is then made into boluses. The boluses are filled in muslin cloth, and then using these muslin bolus dabs, the whole body of the patient is massaged. This full-body massage has excellent effects on neurological and joint functions. The deep tissues within the body are rejuvenated. The treatment is carried on for 45 minutes to 60 minutes by therapists or experts. Another form of the treatment requires the rice to be made into a paste, and then the paste is applied all over the body. But this is more preferred for beautification.

Other effective therapies
Siro Vasti, Kati Vasti, Ela Kizhi and Nasyam are all different forms of Panchakarma treatment, which detoxify the body and mind and rejuvenate the body and nerve functions. But these treatments cannot be conducted on the body on your own. You need a masseur who must be a specialist in Ayurveda to do this for you. Hence contacting Ayurvedic clinics, doctors or experts would be the best to start the treatment.

How Does Internet Addiction Affects Your Brain?

M.D Psychiatry , MBBS
Psychiatrist, Faridabad
How Does Internet Addiction Affects Your Brain?

Internet addiction disorder or IAD, more commonly called Problematic Internet use or PIU, refers to excessive internet use that interferes with your daily life. Too much internet use to chat with friends, watch porn, use social media or surf the net for information- all fall under the purview of internet addiction.

Internet addiction disorder is a recently recognised condition in which sufferers spend unhealthy amounts of time “online” to the extent that it impairs their life quality. The internet addicts may experience distress and withdrawal symptoms just like smokers do, if they are denied access to their computers or mobile phones. They suffer withdrawal symptoms like tremours, obsessive thoughts, and involuntary movements of the fingers like typing.

IAD and Your Health
Internet addiction can have two different types of repercussions- physical and mental. Physical problems associated with this disorder are-

  1. Back pain
  2. Carpel tunnel syndrome
  3. Neck pain due to cervical spondylitis
  4. Sciatica pain

Mental Problems

The psychological and organic harm to the brain caused by internet addiction is still being probed but there is enough research to say conclusively that internet addiction disrupts nerve wiring in the brains of addicts. This addiction thus causes a level of brain damage normally seen in heavy substance abusers. The brains of people who use cocaine and cannabis or other narcotics also show similar effects. The brain thus gets damaged when you get hooked to a behaviour- be it obsessive internet use or drugs. IAD is as physically damaging to your brain like an addiction to drugs, scientists believe.

In particular, brain scans have shown that internet addiction causes significant damage to white matter in the brain. This disruption to white matter nerve fibres connecting vital parts of the brain involved in emotions, decision making, and self-control has long-lasting debilitating results. IAD also shrinks the brain’s gray and white matter fibers which result in changes in your brain functioning and the way you handle emotions.
This disruption in white matter fibers is caused by disrupted myelin, the fatty insulating sheath that coats nerve fibres and helps them to function.

The risk factors for IAD
Specific risk factors for IAD include:

  1. Anxiety, depression or other mental health or mood disorders
  2. Loneliness
  3. Absence of social interaction or support
  4. Presence of other addictions like gambling, alcohol, drugs, or sex
  5. An abrupt change that limits social activity or mobility like having a baby, becoming disabled, losing a job etc.
  6. High levels of stress.

IAD is treatable. All you have to do is seek help. Sometimes, trying to get rid of IAD by yourself doesn’t work. This is the right time to seek the help of a counselor. Behavioural therapies that chip at the root of the problem or the main cause of IAD help you in getting rid of it fast.

This is not good for a healthy life. Thus, it is advisable that you take care of your diet. But prior to that, you must know why vitamin B12 is so essential. Well, here’s all that you get from vitamin B12:

  1. Provides energy: Vitamin B12 is needed for energy supply. It generates energy in your body and takes away lethargy from you. Your cells stay happy and healthy with the intake of vitamin B12. It balances your life by providing you the right amount of energy.

Thus, sufficient intake of vitamin B12 protects bones. They help in calcium absorption and keep bones healthy.
  4. Prevents nerve damage: Vitamin B12 safeguards your nerves by keeping them away from toxins and free and harmful radicals in the bloodstream. They form a covering on the nerves called myelin sheaths. Nerves get damaged completely or partially without these covering.
  5. Keeps you away from depression: It regulates your mood by the production of a chemical called serotonin. Deficiency of vitamin b12 makes you feel lonely, irritated or frustrated always.
  6. Protects health of brain: Researchers believe that Alzheimer’s patients have poor B12 levels in the blood. This vitamin helps in protection of nerve cells and their coverings. They also protect the myelin sheaths of brain cells. An adequate amount of vitamin B12 in the body keeps you away from dementia. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dietitian/Nutritionist.

Vitamin B ~ How It Help Our Body Regulations

The human body requires the basic nutrients for its normal functioning which are carbohydrates, fats and proteins. However, there are certain vital vitamins and minerals too, that are equally important because these help in maintaining the proper health of a human body in various ways. One such vitamin is vitamin b complex of which, there is a crucial vitamin known as vitamin b12 or scientifically called as cobalamin.

Functions of vitamin b12: Vitamin b12 plays a major role by controlling several factors of the human body. These are necessary for the body to run well and stay healthy.  Some of the key functions of vitamin b12 are listed below:

It is responsible for the conversion of raw carbohydrate matter that enters into the body in the form of food into glucose that is the driving energy for the body. Therefore, in a way it helps to keep the continuity of energy production in the human body and its deficiency, therefore, can lead to fatigue or weakness. Every single nature of human cells is related to the dna and rna that define the genetics and hereditary factors of a human body. Vitamin b12 assists in the creation of this dna and rna. Vitamin b12 also helps in the production of nerve cells in the human body by maintaining the covering of the nerve cells or neurones known as the myelin sheaths. This helps to free the body from the reach of toxins and free radicals that can be very harmful to the human body. Hence, any shortage of vitamin b12 can damage the nerve cells in a considerable manner. The bones of the human body need vitamin b12 as well and any deficiency of vitamin b12 can cause osteoporosis and other bone issues. Vitamin b12 in association with another vitamin known as vitamin b9 (folate or folic acid) helps in the manufacture of red blood cells that help in impressive iron functioning, which is the main oxygen carrier of the human blood. Quite evidently, its deficiency can lead to shortness of breath and other breathing disorders. Even heart requires an adequate amount of vitamin b12 along with vitamin b6 and vitamin b9 so that appropriate levels of amino acid named homocysteine are produced that is a deciding factor in heart diseases. Vitamin b12 is an essential component affecting the brain health too, and any deficiency of vitamin b12 can often lead to various brain disorders such as alzheimer’s disease and the like.
