Sugar Addiction - What Should You Know About It?

Sugar Addiction - What Should You Know About It?

For those who are addicted to sugar, getting off it leads to intense cravings and withdrawal symptoms. If you have an uncontrollable urge to devour something sweet, you probably have sugar addiction too. Sugar is known to release dopamine and opioids, which not only makes it addictive, but makes it extremely difficult for you to overcome the withdrawal symptoms.

Mentioned below are 5 signs to figure out if you are addicted to sugar:

  1. Despite being full or not hungry, you consume certain foods due to cravings.

However, it is never too late to break your sugar habit.

Mentioned below are 5 ways to fight your sugar addiction:

  1. Substitute sweets with whole foods
  2. Ditch artificial sweeteners
  3. Clean your house
  4. Create a backup plan
  5. Manage your magnesium levels

Although sugar withdrawal symptoms vary from individual to individual, they usually last for about 3 to 4 weeks. Withdrawing from sugar can be extremely difficult and causes the following symptoms in you, which will surely tempt you into giving in to your cravings:

  1. Feeling lightheaded.
  2. Craving for sugar.
  3. Binge eating.

  5. Depression
  6. Headaches.
  7. Irritability and moodiness.

Diabetes - What Foods Should You Eat And Avoid?

Diabetes - What Foods Should You Eat And Avoid?

Diabetes is a condition where the blood sugar level rises in your body either due to less insulin level in the body or reduced sensitivity of the body to insulin. The foods you eat have a major role in controlling your blood sugar levels. You need to pick your foods wisely to prevent your blood sugar levels from spiking.

The various foods that you should be eating if you have diabetes are:

  1. Dark chocolate: chocolate contains good amounts of flavonoids that help in improving insulin sensitivity and limits food cravings. It also reduces your chances of heart attack.
  2. Blueberries: blueberries are rich in fiber that helps you in managing your blood sugar levels. They also contain anthocyanins that assist in regulating your blood sugar levels.
  3. Fish: fish is rich in omega 3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation in the body, thus reducing your chances of heart problems. Fish is also a good source of protein that helps you in feeling fuller.
  4. Olive oil: olive oil is rich in antioxidants that help in reducing your chances of heart diseases and diabetes.
  5. Oranges: make sure you eat plenty of oranges as they are rich in vitamin cand they reduce the risk of diabetes. You may also opt for broccoli or strawberries.

The various foods you should avoid are:

  1. White rice: white rice is a refined grain which, when consumed, tends to spike your blood sugar levels. You can instead opt for brown rice.
  2. Bananasbanana may contain vitamins and minerals, but are also rich in carbohydrates. Instead, opt for fruits like berries that are not only rich in fiber and antioxidants, but also have a low glycemic index.
  3. Sugary foods: the term sugary foods is used to describe foods such as pastries, cakes, and cookies. These foods are rich in carbohydrate and do not contribute much in making the body healthy. Instead, replace them with natural foods such as chickpeas and peanuts.
  4. Dried fruit: various dried fruits contain a high concentration of sugar, which happens due to the dehydration process by which they are formed. So replace them with fresh fruits such as guava and peaches to control your blood sugar levels.

Amongst all other dry fruits, almonds and walnuts can be had in moderation as they contain essential fatty acids and do not affect blood sugars.

Braces - How To Select One?

Braces - How To Select One?

A generation ago, we would not see so many adolescents with braces as we do currently. Orthodontics, the branch of dentistry involved in the use of braces to align and move teeth to form that perfect arch, has seen rapid advancements in the past few decades and continues to grow at a rapid pace.
The fundamental principle is that the teeth is held in place by surrounding elastic tissues, and minor constant forces can be applied to align them better. Small metal brackets are applied on the teeth and a wire is passed through them so that there is a constant force on the teeth. The amount and direction of force is managed by the doctor. The younger the age, the more elastic the tissue is, the easier it is to move teeth.

There are two main things to understand in terms of your options, relation of age with orthodontic treatment and the choices of braces.

Firstly, correlation with age. Over the years, more people in their 20s and early 30s are choosing to have braces. Though the teeth and more importantly the surrounding periodontium become less elastic with age, the amount of force exerted is increased and therefore tooth movement is enabled. Also, in older patients, tooth removal may be required more frequently to make space for proper alignment.

Secondly, the choices of the braces:

  1. In the earlier days, bands were placed around the teeth and a wire was then connecting all these bands to enable tooth movement. Gradually, this made way to small brackets being placed on the front surface of the teeth, and a wire running through it and elastic bands connecting the bracket and the wire. This is the most effective way of moving teeth, though not esthetic. To make it look different, the ligatures could be coloured.
  2. For people who are constantly in the public eye, the metal braces were a deterrent and so lingual braces became popular. The brackets are applied on the inner surface of the teeth and are not seen easily. The amount of force here varies from the earlier one, and not all conditions can be treated by this method.
  3. The next development was the development of ceramic braces, which are also applied to the front surface of the teeth and can be used in most cases. These are more expensive than the metallic braces.
  4. Removable aligners is another option, which are trays which need to be worn for close to 18 hours a day to induce tooth movement. This is esthetic and no metal shows during talking or smiling.

So, if you want to improve your smile, visit your dentist and find out how!

You have clearly diabetes and try the diabetic diet and precautions as I outline here. Diabetes affects all organs in the body – eyes, kidneys, nerves, reproductive system all are affected, in fact, from toe to hair. For diabetic control, patient and doctor should be in constant touch for regular follow up and advice. The common symptoms are: -both types of diabetes have some of the same tell-tale warning signs. Hunger and fatigue. Your body converts the food you eat into glucose that your cells use for energy. But your cells need insulin to bring the glucose in. If your body doesn't make enough or any insulin, or if your cells resist the insulin your body makes, the glucose can't get into them and you have no energy. This can make you more hungry and tired than usual. Urinating more often and being thirstier. The average person usually has to pee between four and seven times in 24 hours, but people with diabetes may go a lot more. Dry mouth and itchy skin. Because your body is using fluids to make pee, there's less moisture for other things. You could get dehydrated, and your mouth may feel dry. Dry skin can make you itchy. Blurred vision. Changing fluid levels in your body could make the lenses in your eyes swell up. They change shape and lose their ability to focus. You need a total check up before doing anything. Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin or both. It is a difficult task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolized to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (self-monitoring of blood glucose – smbg). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of fasting sugar (fbs) and 2 hours after food (ppbs), & hba1c (inform me) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ insulin will be needed. There are different diet plans of varying calories for each person depending on his activity & lifestyle. For diabetes, hypertension (high bp) and much long-term illness control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one-time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in a scientifically & medically correct manner. Forgiving you regular follow up you ask me with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take. I assure you proper guidance. If you keep in touch personally. Nail Fungus - How To Handle It?

Nail Fungus - How To Handle It?

Nail fungus is a fungal infection that develops under the tip of the toenail or the fingernail. It has a whitish or yellowish appearance and as the condition progresses, it causes the affected area of the nail to thicken, discolour and crumble at the edges. Usually, this condition does not require any treatment, but if it turns severe, then you may require treatment to limit it from spreading.

The symptoms of this disorder are:

1. The affected nail thickens
2. There can be distortion in the shape of the nail
3. The nail can become crumbly and ragged
4. Discolored nails that lose its natural shine
5. Accumulation of debris on the nail
The infected nail may also be separated from the nail bed, causing pain and a foul odor.

The condition is usually caused by the dermatophyte fungus. In some cases, molds and yeasts can also cause fungal infections. Fungi are microscopic organisms that have certain characteristics such as:

1. They can cause complications if your nails are often exposed to moist and warm conditions
2. They usually thrive in moist and warm conditions such as showers and swimming pools
3. These fungi get into the skin through small cuts on your skin

The fungus usually affects toenails because, when you wear shoes, a warm and moist environment is created which is the perfect breeding spot for the fungus. The factors that can increase your chances of getting affected by this fungal infection are

1. Heavy perspiration
2. Athlete’s foot (a condition which is characterized by rashes between the toenails)
3. Older people are affected more as blood circulation is reduced
4. Wearing socks for extended periods of time creates warm and a humid condition for the fungi to grow
5. Certain medical conditions such as diabetes

There are certain medications that are used to treat fungal infections:

  1. Oral anti fungal drugs: These medications help in getting rid of fungal infections.
  2. Nail creams: There are certain anti fungal nail creams available that you can apply on your nails to get rid of this condition.

Laser Hair Removal Procedure

Play video

Laser hair removal is a permanent hair removal method that makes use of laser beams to reach the hair follicles before the light from the beam is absorbed by the same. This method is preferred by people who do not want to go in for traditional methods like waxing, tweezing and epilating as these require regular sessions and may not always be convenient.
