Malaria During Pregnancy - 4 Ways it Can be Treated!

Malaria is a disease that is caused by the bite of a certain mosquito or protozoan parasite. This can attack the red blood cells and is mainly found in tropical as well as subtropical areas. Until recently, there was little chance of recovering from this ailment. Yet, in today's day and age of great medical advancement, it has become possible to cure a patient suffering from this disease with the help of timely and proper diagnosis. This disease becomes even more complicated and problematic when it affects pregnant women.

The ways in which this disease can be treated during pregnancy is as follows:

  1. Medication therapy: If woman is found to be suffering from this disease in the second or third trimester of their pregnancy, they may be prescribed artemisinin-based therapy. This therapy can be used only if the pregnant lady is not suffering from any other kind of complications like heart conditions, diabetes and high blood pressure, during the pregnancy. This medicine is short-acting, with artemether or artesunate, which can greatly reduce the number of parasites that may have invaded the red blood cells.
  2. Other antimalarials: The treatment of this disease for pregnant women can also be done with the help of other antimalarials, which should typically be prescribed and administered in a clinical setting. These also include quinidine gluconate which can be used in place of the IV quinine in order to bring down the number of parasites in the body. This will lessen the attack on the red blood cells to a great degree. Lumefantrine tablets may also be used in such cases. Also, the doctor will have to first try a test dose to ensure that the patient is not allergic to any of the elements or compounds of these medicines.
  3. Monitoring: Pregnant women suffering from malaria will need to get their blood samples tested on a regular basis. The blood smears will usually be tested daily to check whether the body is responding adequately to the treatment. This will also ensure that the doctor knows when to change the dose or the drug involved.
  4. Diet and exercise: The patient will be asked to stick to the normal diet and activity levels. Yet, care must be taken to avoid any situation where fatigue might set in, as this can aggravate the condition. One must also increase the intake of water to ensure that the body is always well hydrated. This helps the body in bouncing back to normal as the toxins are continuously flushed out, and the immunity system is better equipped to fight the disease causing parasites.

What are the symptoms of malaria? How can we cure it? What are the possible treatments?
Thanks for your query. Malaria is a life-threatening blood disease caused by parasites transmitted to humans through the bite of the Anopheles mosquito. Malaria symptoms can be classified in two categories: uncomplicated and severe malaria. Uncomplicated malaria- Sensation of cold, shivering Fever, headaches, and vomiting (fits sometimes occur in young children) Sweats followed by a return to normal temperature, with tiredness. Severe malaria- Fever and chills Loss of conciousness Multiple fits Deep breathing and difficulty in breathing Abnormal bleeding Clinical jaundice and evidence of vital organ dysfunction. Treatment- The most effective treatment for Malaria is the use of artemisinins in combination with other antimalarials. These additional antimalarials include: amodiaquine, lumefantrine, mefloquine or sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine. Another recommended combination is dihydroartemisinin and piperaquine.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. If hypothyroidism is diagnosed with TSH value of 48.09 mU/L, then treatment has to be with levothyroxine. Dosage is calculated on the basis of patient's weight, T4 & TSH values. It is better to begin with 50 mcg per day, then test TSH after 6 weeks and lf level is more than 3 to 4 mU/L then dose has to be increased. If you have any doubts please come back, thanks.

Hi It appears you have been hyper stimulated. Your ultrasound shows about 5 follicles 15 mm and above and about 4 smaller follicles. In this cycle you do have an increased risk of multiple pregnancy that is conceiving twins or even higher order gestation. This is not an OK cycle but we do see a response like this after giving ovulation medications. Your doctor will plan a lower dose of ovulation induction if you don't conceive this cycle. You can go ahead with the injection only if the risks of twins or high order (triplets and above) are acceptable to you. If not than its is better to avoid intercourse in this cycle and plan next cycle with a lower dose.

I have been suffering from mild hydrocele since 9 month .i have got married. Will hydrocele affect my marriage life.
Hydrocele, an accumulation of fluid in the scrotum that causes it to swell, is one of the chronic manifestations of LF among men and there are about 27 million men with hydrocele worldwide. We conducted ethnographic interviews and discussions with patients, women whose husbands have hydrocele, and the general public in a rural community of eastern India. The study describes how hydrocele impacts patients' sexual and marital life. It reveals the most worrisome effect of hydrocele for patients and their wives due to the inability to have a satisfactory sexual life. Patients expressed their incapacity during sexual intercourse. A majority of hydrocele patients' wives reported that their married life became burdened and couples were not living happily.
