Expectorants help thin mucus, making it easier to cough up. The ingredient guaifenesin is the only expectorant in the U.S., so look for it on the label if you need an expectorant. Suppressants help cut the number of times you cough. The active ingredient listed is usually dextromethorphan (DM).

Nop. You can not give it without knowing the cause of breathlessness. We need to know in detail about your child like age, duration of symptom, past history, allergic history, drug history, chest examination finding etc etc. If you can share in detail, then only some opinion can be given. But breathlessness at this age is a medical emergency which you should not keep lightly without knowing the cause!

Don't give ascoril for common cold. It contains terbutaline, and will increase herat rate. Use only simple cough remedies like benadryl cough formula, which contains only diphenhydramine and ammoniumchloride.
