Honey vs Sugar - Which Is Better?

Is honey better than sugar? Should we substitute honey for sugar? Are there any health benefits of consuming honey? Although both honey and sugar add sweetness to your food, their nutritional values are quite diverse.

You can add honey in green tea, oats, muesli etc during the breakfast as an alternative to sugar. Here’s a comparison between them to know if honey is healthier than sugar!

Honey

This sweet nectar is a dense liquid and comes in a variety of types including alfalfa, wildflower, tupelo, golden blossom, etc. Each of them possesses a unique flavor and taste.

Honey primarily contains fructose and glucose and trace amounts of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids and antioxidants. Honey is also rich in Flavonoids due to which this thick liquid shows potent anti-inflammatory properties and provides quite a few health benefits.

Sugar

Sugar is made up of sucrose and has no added vitamins or minerals. After deriving it from sugar cane plants, sugar is processed and refined to form granules.

Raw, white and brown sugar are the most popular types of sugars, out of which brown sugar is rich in few nutrients. Raw sugar is a less-refined in comparison to white sugar, however, their nutritional value does not differ much.

Potassium 11mg 0.3mg
Protein 0.1g 0g

Benefits of Honey and Sugar

Benefits of Honey:

  1. Honey contains traces of nutrients including minerals and vitamins.
  2. A small amount of honey is generally enough to make your food taste sweet.
  3. Honey has antibacterial characteristics and treats bacterial infections.
  4. Honey, when applied topically, helps in faster healing of wounds.
  5. It helps in easing out congestion and sore throat.

Benefits of Sugar:

  1. Sugar is lower in calories and has a longer shelf life.
  2. It is low in cost and conveniently available.
  3. It is a naturally-occurring compound.
  4. It is easier to incorporate sugar in foods and drinks.
  5. Sugar acts as a potent source of energy.

Side Effects Of Eating Honey and Sugar

Cons of Honey

  1. This dense liquid is high in calories.
  2. It is not safe to use honey in babies less than 1-year-old.
  3. Excess consumption of honey can destabilizes the blood sugar levels.
  4. It can put you at risk of heart diseases.
  5. It can sometimes be problematic to use this sticky liquid for cooking purposes.

Cons of Sugar

  1. Sugar consumption can put you at risk of many health diseases.
  2. It can cause obesity in individuals.
  3. It is generally difficult to digest sugars.
  4. It is quite processed and refined.
  5. It has a high glycemic index and can impact liver functioning.

Conclusion:

Both honey and sugar are widely used as sweeteners and have very distinct texture as well as taste. Some enjoy the molasses taste of brown sugar, others relish the flavor of honey on the morning toast.

You can experiment with them as per your taste preferences however, it is vital to keep an eye on the amount you are consuming! Honey and sugar should always be consumed in moderate amounts and you must try to reduce their intake. You can put half a packet of sugar in coffee or half a teaspoon of honey in your morning tea, rather than a full serving if you like your drinks sweet.

To say it all, Honey has been proven to be better than sugar, considering it has traces of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Honey helps in alleviating certain health issues and provide relief from cough and sore throat. However, both honey and sugar have bad effects on your health and body, if overconsumed. When overconsumed in excess, they can lead to weight gain, heart diseases, diabetes and tooth decay.

Is Sugar Good For Your Face?

Is Sugar Good For Your Face?

Almost every person salivates over desserts and sweets. One does not need a special occasion to get their sweet tooth going. While the lip-smacking sugary delight might impress the taste buds, it is sure to affect the health in a big way. If you thought that sugar was only bad for your waistline and general health, then you need to know that it is equally harmful for your skin. In fact, it can lead to serious dermatological conditions.

Harmful effects of sugar on the skin

  • A lot of what we eat reflects on our body externally. A number of internal changes can influence the external appearance of the body. Excessive intake of carbohydrates, starch and sugar can have an adverse effect on the skin. It can also accelerate the ageing process. But what triggers these complications needs to be understood and discussed in detail.
  • Carbohydrates can be simple or complex. Simple carbohydrates (cake, bread; to name a few) break down and convert to glucose rapidly. Increased glucose level implies increased insulin level, and causes inflammation, which affects the whole body. The enzymes produced during inflammation breaks down important proteins, namely elastin and collagen, leading to wrinkles and saggy skin.
  • Acne problems mainly arise from Glycation (the process through which digested sugar attaches permanently to the collagen). Glycation plays a significant role in accelerating the ageing process.
  • Complex carbohydrates, on the other hand, are good for health. When ingested, complex carbohydrates break down at a much slower rate. As a result, there is no abnormal increase in the insulin level.

Corrective measures to check the harmful effects of sugar on the skin:

With a little care and preventive measures, the deleterious effects of sugar on the skin can be minimised.

1. Supplement your diet with foods rich in antioxidants. Lean proteins, fibrous foods and diets rich in good fats are highly recommended. Include beans and nuts that have low glycemic value in your diet. Drink plenty of water.
2. Food items containing high amount of saturated fats (cheese, ice creams, fried foods; to name a few), and with high glycemic value should be strictly avoided.
3. Do not compromise with your sleep. A sound sleep and a stress-free life is the mantra to a glowing and youthful skin.
4. Practice meditation and yoga diligently. The rewarding and positive outcomes will leave you in awe.
5. Do not skip your meals or indulge in overeating. Have small servings at regular intervals.

Mr. Lybrate-user, to prevent diabetes one has to adapt a modified lifestyle. Which means maintain near normal weight, exercise daily for 1 hour or more, take restricted diet giving exact calories based on ideal body weight. Avoid too much of sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, sweetened aerated drinks, sweet corn syrup containing products, high fat milk products and highly processed products. Sugarless tablet alone are not much of help.

Know How Figs (Anjeer) Helped Me In Controlling Blood Sugar Levels!

Dry fruits undoubtedly are great energy foods that are loaded with vital nutrients like minerals and vitamins. Anjeer or fig is one of the most popularly used dry fruit, and has multiple benefits. So, it's essential to include this fruit in your diet. Anjeer or fig can be consumed in multiple ways.

First is, by sun drying it and having it raw. You can even store this dried fig throughout the year. People across the country love the milk shake of Kaju Anjeer. For which, you need to soak some figs and add them along with cashews to the milk. Alternatively, you can even roughly cut them and add to your salads. The most delicious way to have figs is by adding them in your desserts. You can also make sweets like barfi and peda (milk sweet) with this healthy ingredient.

Here are 9 health benefits of this super fruit:

  1. Controls blood pressure and ageing: Figs are rich in potassium, which negates the effect of sodium and helps in controlling blood pressure. They can also help in controlling ageing effects by providing you enough iron, estrogen, etc. This keeps your hormones in check and boosts your energy as well. Figs are also great for skin and hair and nails. Mashed figs applied on the face can prevent acne.125490
  2. Helps in weight managementModerate amount of figs can help in controlling weight. They are rich in fiber, and therefore eating figs is a good way to keep junk and fried foods at bay. When in the mood for a light snack, pick figs and they will make you feel full, at the same time, but in a healthy way.
  3. Heart healthy food: Figs reduce the amount of triglycerides in the blood. Triglycerides are the culprit for inducing heart disease as they are fat particles which accumulate along the blood vessel and cause heart attacks.
  4. Reduces chances of cancerFigs are rich in antioxidants and therefore help in controlling release of free radicals and chronic inflammation. The free radicals are the ones responsible for chronic inflammation including cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Figs are therefore believed to have a preventive effect on these chronic health conditions.
  5. Controls blood sugarThe chlorogenic acid present in figs helps in reducing blood sugar levels in diabetics. Potassium which is found in abundance in figs also plays a good role in control of blood sugar levels.
  6. Improves bone health: Calcium is the main ingredient required for healthy bones, and figs are a good natural source for this. While dairy products are a good source, they are not alone sufficient, and figs can be a good second-line supplement.
  7. Aids in constipationBeing rich in fiber, figs are good for intestinal motility and can prevent constipation. The fiber provides roughage, aiding in good bowel movements
  8. Keeps the reproductive system in check: Figs are rich in minerals like magnesium, zinc, and manganese which contribute to vitality and fertility. Figs can be soaked in milk and consumed or eaten in other forms as mentioned above. So, if you're pregnant or planning a baby, do include this super food in your diet.
  9. Prevent kidney stonesBoil some figs in water and once cool, this water can be consumed for a few days to prevent kidney stones.

Mr. Lybrate-user, if a person develops diabetes, then he should initiate proper treatment. Treatment will depend upon type of diabetes and severity of blood glucose levels. T1 diabetes is treated with insulin injections. T2 can be treated by oral anti diabetes drugs and insulin injections or both. In addition to this strict diet control and regular exercise to maintain normal weight. Once diabetes is diagnosed it is better to avoid sweets and deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries and bakery items. Thanks.

One can prevent diabetes if a strict life style modification is followed. Namely maintain your weight near normal, (which is fine with you as the weight is much less, exercise for more than 1 h every day, avoid deep fried foods, less of sweets and direct sugar. Also avoid alcohol and smoking. With these changes you should be able to keep free from diabetes.
